2009?: Sherlock Holmes/The Lone Ranger/Robin Hood

Which do you think will be the more radical re-imagining of the character?

Guy Ritchie's seems to be the furthest along and Rachel McAdams will be playing Irene Adler - and this will be a recurring character should there be sequels.

The Lone Ranger all we know is Depp as Tonto and sadly Elliott and Rossio writing. I would prefer more interesting writers. And since Bruckheimer is producing we know this won't be a director driven movie.

Scott and Crowe's Robin Hood/Nottingham I am sure will be the more dramatic of the three.

1st I've heard of this. Is it confirmed?

We've also got Tarzan, John Carter, and Green Hornet flicks in development. Not to mention the other Sherlock Holmes projects.

Is what confirmed? Depp as Tonto and Bruckheimer producing. Yes. In the trades today and on just about every news site. The writers? Believe I read that from someone who attended the Disney thing yesterday on AICN.

And see, the other Sherlock Holmes project just doesn't interest me that much. Not sure why. I just haven't gotten excited for it. Maybe something will come along and interest me in it.

Yeah, if this was the year of super heroes, guess next year is the year of pulp heroes returning. Or 2010. That is why there is the question mark.

Still wondering which way they might go for The Lone Ranger. Then again 3:10 to Yuma starred Crowe and Bale, so sure they can find someone interesting. Or they could up the crazy factor and throw Downey in as The Lone Ranger (yes I know it won't happen and can't with his schedule, but it would be fun to see).

Did you submit that as news to CHUD?

Guy Ritchie's Holmes, no doubt. Guaranteed to be unwatchable, even with the presence of McAdams.

I thought Elliott and Rossio did fine work for THE MASK OF ZORRO, and also for THE PUPPET MASTERS (another pulp adaptation). Their scripts are zesty, exciting, never smug with source material. The less successful Zorro sequel suffered from ugly photography and rush-job editing. Not a fan of the first PIRATES (didn't bother with its sequels) but, again, I wouldn't blame the writers.

I'm wondering if Rogen/Chow's GREEN HORNET project - certain to be a condescending revamp - will acknowledge that Britt Reid is actually The Lone Ranger's great-nephew.

I would love to see new films for The Shadow (faithful to Walter B. Gibson's superb novels rather than the radio show), The Saint, Modesty Blaise, and Diabolik.

Not sure they can acknowledge that. I believe there are rights issues with the Green Hornet owned by one group and Lone Ranger by another. Still, would be fun if they could find some way to work around it.

Did you ever see the direct to DVD Modesty Blaise? I remember reading somewhere it was good.

I didn't like MY NAME IS MODESTY. Aside of its cheapness and dullness, the movie poorly attempts to cover Modesty's early days in a Tangier casino, before she forms the Network and recruits Willie Garvin. It's probably the least interesting phase of the character's life, and was wisely confined to back-story in O' Donnell's comic strips and novels. Endless flashbacks cover Modesty's nomadic childhood and tutelage under Lob; everything else is set in the casino, and is stuffed with ridiculous POV shots that Scott Spiegel has become (in)famous for. The project was just thrown together so that the Weinsteins could continue to hold the rights to (and do nothing with) O'Donnell's characters.

However, the disc is worth a rental simply for an excellent hour-long (!) interview with O'Donnell. Far less interesting is a Q&A with Tarantino and Spiegel (who seems amazed that he got the job).

Are you a fan, Casey? The novels and strips are great.

Haven't read any. Sadly all I have seen is the acid trip 60's version. Need to check them out though.

In terms of faithfulness, I'll give it to Lone Ranger. Elliot and Russio wrote a pretty faithful Zorro flick. Nottingham will be faithful to the time but will twist both Robin Hood and the Sheriff as more three dimensional. Sherlock Holmes I assume will be just crazy, do whatever the fuck we want fun.

In terms of quality.. Nottingham will be the Oscar buzz picture. Sherlock Holmes will be the quirky, indie-esque violent picture. And Lone Ranger will be the uber-blockbuster.

So in terms of Box Office, Lone Ranger will be the big 200 M+. Nottingham will do over 100 M. And Sherlock Holmes will do average.

Depp as Tonto?
I guess Adam "the only native american actor who gets work in hollywood" Beach was busy.

I thought that item about Depp playing Tonto was a joke.

Wow. The things that some people think of while blitzed on their minds with coke.

I can think of a lot more interesting people I would like to see taking on The Lone Ranger. But this is the hand we are dealt with. Does kind of suck the more I think of it.

It's not like this is out of left field or anything. Depp not only has Cherokee and Navajo blood but he's also played a Native Indian character before in The Brave. He even directed it.

as someone who will live or die by his fandom of tony scott, i'd watch a lone ranger directed by him over all the other bruckheimer directors (who am i kidding, i'm excited that the 1981 lone ranger is finally on dvd so i can find out if it is as bad as people say or as awesome as i thought it was when i was six. jeebus i love my lone ranger. i'll watch it regardless of thr quality of talent.)

The Shadow really should get another shot at a feature. I swore I heard somewhere in the past few months that Sam Raimi was thinking of developing it again after losing out a chance to it in the early 90s (which supposedly led him to make the similarly themed Darkman). Maybe I just dreamed it.
