Talkbacks are Back

Thread Starter
Just seeing what happens.
Nice!
I was toying with the idea of making a thread asking for them.

Too many missed opportunities with some great articles lately.
Awesome.
Is there any difference between this one and the last one? I know you wanted to beef up the "security" on it.

No. This is the old shit. The new ones will be sexy!
Sexy as me, or sexy as Murphy's Brad Pitt voice?
As soon as I read this announcement, I clicked to the last article Devin put up to see how many "Stop eating Doritos" or other fat joke comments immediately sprang up.

I was sorely disappointed.
Hey... Maybe you should call them "Comments" because the only other place that calls them talkbacks is full of Neanderthals.
Haha, YES.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

...I am actually DEEPLY PLEASED.
I, for one, welcome the return of SlestakVaginaFace.
Now I feel stupid for posting a comment saying "Hey, talkbacks are back?". Guess that's what I get for foolishly reading the front page first. Wait...

Oh, that was you? I was gonna respond to that, but didn't want to drag the talk backs off topic.
I was as shocked as anyone when a dozen comment notifications landed in my inbox. Cool.
Nothing like getting out of a screening to find an inbox full of unpleasant comments.
Time to hide in the bedroom...
DO NOT WANT, just for the record. It's not my site and this post is all the complaining I'm going to do about it... but fuck talkbacks.
I have to say that admits the retardation, there would be some hilarious comments here and there (though few intentional). Good time waster while I sit here at work with nothing to do - fuckin' economy...
They haven't been working for me. Of course, I used to post as "Owen's Uncle who molested him" so maybe that could be the cause.
Good idea. In theory. I sincerely hope that it works.
I tried to post a comment on the I Am Legend 2 article (Jesus in Heaven!)

I keep getting a comment that I have not copied the verification image properly.

But I did. Case sensitive and everything.

Fuck this.
Once they were gone, I really missed them, so I'm glad they're back. The site always felt more alive with talkbacks. It's a trade off, but the 'tards are only as annoying as you let them be.
Does this mean Owen's writing for the main page again? I KEED I KEED.
Nah, we have Ian now... Do we?
They've been up for only a few hours and I've already been called an idiot. Awesome!
This is a good thing.
One of my reviews has been commented upon by "Unboned Snoozer." I can now call myself a man.

This.

For what it's worth, I can do without 'em too, and I certainly don't get the possible added value (except if it's a promotional thing for the site).
They're right there below the article, so hard to ignore- esp. since most of the posters insist on typing their retardations in capitals. I come here to read some quality writing on films and movie news, and it's about the best place on the web to do so. But even glancing at these TBs feels like leaving a gourmet restaurant through the backdoor, through a back alley filled with tramps muttering to themselves lying in their own pee.

Seriously, for me it devalues the site. All relevant discussion happens in the forums, by people who care. Talkbacks have the very rare instance of mildly funny wit, at best- and generally just redundant remarks or (most common) the kind of moronic throwaways that I really can do without in life.
Hey, it's your site- but since this thread is here, I suppose you're at least interested in the feedback. And I get the impression Devin's not too thrilled with the return of TB either.

They do suck, but I hold out hope, because it's not impossible for under-the-article style comments to be good. The AV Club, for example, has theirs filled with some funny jokes, some good discussion, and usually a tolerable amount of shit. I don't know if we just need to give it time, or have newer, more moderated versions, or what. But if it brings new people to the site, that may be worth it even if the talkbacks never get great.

Can we bring back the little green reputation boxes instead? Those made me feel loved.
This is nice for the DVD reviewers, and I'll leave it at that.
I think a system like what DIGG has, with a thumb up/down box next to every comment, would help greatly. That way the morons who post stupid shit on the TBs will be relegated to the bottom of the page.
The Trolls will grow tired of them and move on. Keep 'em I sez.

Hell, let's have the Rep system back also. Goofy but fun.

I agree with this entire post because I love CHUD. The boards attract and promote a community of solid, dedicated, genuine lovers of film. Talkbacks/comments promote fat jokes from no-name pussy cowards who are desperately seeking attention.

Having stated the above, I understand that adding these back promotes quick and dirty communication with other readers which encourages more visitor traffic. I hope it helps the site in that regard - if that's even the desired result. As a Chewer who wants to read real people's thoughts on the boards, though, I hate the shit out of this feature.

Back on topic, the Talkbacks are decent. The trolls haven't moved on, but who cares. If it helps to keep them off the boards, then so be it. They are pretty easy to ignore.

Really? I'd forget they were there if it weren't for this thread popping up to the top of Catch-All. I usually stop scrolling once I get to the end if the article.
The funny (or sad) thing is most of the trolls are relegated to Devin's articles. They really, really hate Devin. The comments on Russ' (oops, I mean Alex) article "Where Did The Colour of Magic Come From" are actually pretty good.
Hey!
Whoops, sorry Alex. My bad.
Devin catches a lot of really stupid, unnecessary shit in the comments. Mine haven't been too bad -- there are a few outright idiots that I've deleted -- and some of the discussion is pretty good. I'll be all for the system once we've got registration and IP banning options in place.
Russ and Alex clearly are not attractive enough to charm the more abusive trolls.
I'm pretty happy with the people I am able to charm. I can live with this.
It's possible you're not controversial enough too.

Have you ever considered hating on a minority?
