Jarhead "Rare" Boxed Set

According to Wikipedia, the multi-disc set for Jarhead is a "rare" item with "controversial" material on the features disc. If there's a thread about this somewhere, I couldn't find it so I just wanted to ask if anyone has this set and has seen this material, or wants to offer any comment about this.

The reason I ask is because I picked this set up for 10 dollars, used, at a local game store. I'm kind of psyched that it's "rare" and has stuff that may not be seen in future releases of the film. I haven't checked the material out, so I also wanted to know some more details. This is the best place to look.

Thanks in advance, Chewers.

I have it (the one with the dogtag cover, right?) but I still haven't even taken it out of the plastic (same goes for my Munich boxed set), so I have no idea what's so controversial about it.

I will say this: the text on the sticker on the box and on the "Extras" text on the back is presented in both English and French. I dunno what that's all about.

So it looks like you and I are in the same boat. Somebody help us know more about what we spend our money on!

Universal pulled the Limited Editions less than 2 weeks after release. Universal has never bothered to do a re-release of the sets.

There was some talk of questionable material on Disc 2 of Jarhead: LE. But, I'm not sure what it was.

From DVD-Talk:

For review, we were provided with the single disc release; Universal is also releasing a two-disc "Collector's Edition," which, in addition, to the bonus features listed below includes the following: "Jarhead Diaries," a collection of video diaries with an introduction from Mendes; "Background," a featurette examining the real U.S. Marines who appear in the film (also with a Mendes introduction); "Semper Fi: Life After The Corps," a featurette with Swofford and Laura Nix interviewing former Marines about re-integrating into civilian life (also with a Mendes introduction and Swofford audio introduction).
A friend of mine managed to snag the 2-disc set when it first came out, and I remember watching some of the Semper Fi feature. It's great, but from what I remember didn't contain anything "controversial".

Then why'd it get pulled?

1. Yep:

2. I dunno why I've never taken these two out of their plastic (I blame OCD). I bought 'em from Amazon.com; not the normal store, but the "e-sellers" or whatever-they're-called option.

When I saw all the French text on my Jarhead set I thought I bought a Canadian* version or French version by mistake (or suckered, in any case) but I checked out the stats and details on the back of the box at the bottom and it was Region 1 and everything. So, yeah, nutty.

* Yes, I know Canada is Region 1. You know what I meant.

It didn't exactly. It was always supposed to be a limited edition. They sold out fast. Even on preorder, a lot of orders at different places got cancelled.

Same thing with Munich. I think United 93 was a little bit better.

But, it's all bullshit anyway. If they're going to do a two disc set, they should just make it a two disc set. Not a small ass run like that.

What I heard about Jarhead back in the day was there was confidential Hush-hush information leaked in some of the interviews with soldiers and it got yanked because of that.

I agree. Even the double of Batman Begins is somewhat hard to find now. Munich, Jarhead, and United 93 were ludicrous though.

I've seen a bunch of HD-DVDs on sale at Fry's lately, and a bunch of those have English and French on both the front and back covers. For example, "Bruce Almighty" is on the cover, and just underneath it is the French version of the title, along with French versions of any other comments on the front. It struck me as odd as well.

The French text thing happened to me recently with a copy of the 4 disc version of Superman: The Movie that I found for $7.99 at a Kroger of all places. I just figured it was a Canadian pressing and didn't care because it was cheap.

Yeah, I think you guys are definitely getting Canadian copies as cheap DVDs up here tend to have French and English where as the more expensive and flashy sets never do.

Thanks for all the info. I still can't believe there's a fucking Munich 2-disc. I waited a year or more to buy that movie cuz I was sure there'd be a Special Ed and I never ever saw one.
