Coming to Vancouver

In a week or two I'll be coming up to Vancouver until late December to work on a production. I've only been there once before and that was last year for the company Christmas party. I spent a few days there pretty much wandering the streets because everyone else had gone off to do family Christmas shit. So, when I'm not on set for hours and hours, I'll be trying to not miss things like In-N-Out, temperatures above 40, limited release films, and the DVDs that I've already ordered from Amazon during that time but trying to find some fun stuff to do. Anyone have any ideas?

Also, I've been looking for an apartment to sublet for the time I'm there in the Downtown/West End/Yaletown area. Mostly on Craig's List. Haven't been having tons of luck. My idiot boss has already tried to low ball me with what I can spend, but I think more realistically I'll be able to go between 1500 and 1800 CDN. If anyone knows of a place, or has any other ideas of places to look I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

there's a big shortage of cheap apartments in Vancouver, there'll be some available at that price but don't be surprised if 30-50 people turn up to look at the apartments. We really struggled - I strongly suggest you ask anyone you know there if they know of someone with a place for short term rental. Or hop around, a month here, month there.

You're probably up here by now, so sorry if this a bit late. If you need anything specific or any help, pm me.

I'm coming up on the 21st now, and it's possibly only for a month, but could be two. I had a great place set up this week, and right as the deposit check is about to be delivered the landlord emails me some bullshit about her partners being unhappy she took the deal, and wanting her to show the apartment anyway today. She gives me some bs that she doubts she'll get someone to take it today, but then emails me today saying she rented it for 6 months. Fucking bitch. Now I've got a week before I go up and I'm left with nothing again.

I know a guy who used to work for the company who is out of town so I'm able to sublet his apartment. It's not really where I'd like to be but I really couldn't find anything else available on the date I needed it for the price I was budgeted. It's right near a cemetery, which creeps me out for one, and means if there is a zombie attack I'll probably die first. Last time I was in Vancouver I stayed downtown and I liked to be able to walk around a lot on and near Robson, which I probably wont be able to do now unless I drive over there first. Oh well.

Well I'm off North on Tuesday.

You being the DVD buying nut you are, if you hit Charlie's downtown [next to the Empire Granville theatre] they're having a sale, 25% off everything.

Thanks Darth. I'll check it out, as I've got some per diem burning a hole in my pocket (even if it's not worth as much as it was a couple month ago).

Someone I work with worked on Watchmen and told me where the backlot it so I'll be driving over there this weekend. I'm so fucking jealous of her.

If anyone else has good ideas be sure to let me know.

What I'm pissed about right now is that Synecdoche, NY is coming out this weekend, and I'm hundreds of miles from any theater playing it. Me so sad.

I've had enough of your damn snow! I want back to LA! I'm actually supposed to leave Monday, but with the weather I'm not sure what is going to happen.

I fucking love Charlies. I popped in there after Let The Right One In during VIFF. 25 cents for about ten or fifteen DVD's, can't lose.

Sup Chocula? Haven't heard from ya since we were going to hit Dark Knight.

It's been pretty damn cold down here. Of course nothing compared to what you're dealing with.

40 degrees isn't shit.
Exactly.

40 degrees is shorts and a T.

I figured. I used to joke that when it would get really cold here. People in the midwest would think of it as speedo weather.

Pretty much it was like 40 last night, didn't have to wear a coat. And for some goddamn reason it was like 60 degrees today.

FUCK this city and it's "Drivers". I just spent an hour of my life helping stupid idiots get their cars unstuck.

GET WINTER TIRES ALREADY. I know this is ALOT of snow for Vancouver but get fucking used to it and quick. This snowfall WILL happen again and you'd better be prepared, cause if you're not, I'll kill you myself.

It's funny, maybe it was just so cold I was numb to it up there, cuz down here it feels a lot colder some of these nights in LA than it was up there. Thankfully no snow though.

I just couldn't get enough of Canada, so I'm going back for another film shoot next month. Got my place lined up (unfortunately once again I failed to get lodgings downtown. I was so close to subletting a studio in the ScotiaBank Theater building, which would have made film going a snap, but the guy was in a hurry and took another offer) up Main a bit (in the 20s, while last time I was in the 40s so a bit closer to town) and the place (another so called "bachelor suite") looks pretty nice and has cable TV so score there.

Anything changed in the last year I should know about? Anything worth doing or seeing (remember I hate nature)?
