To the enemies of the advancement of gaming as a medium, a.k.a. A Personal Protest.

Until further notice, if a game has a armored space marine as a protagonist, or a band of space marines as protagonists, or a band of space marines as major players in the storyline, the game, and the studio that created it are automatically shit in my book, and will be avoided as such. I don't care if the game leaks excellence from the ass in every other respect. If they're too damned lazy to come up with a set of empathetic characters without resorting to the easiest, most lunkheaded archetype to gain regularity in this medium since kidnapped princesses, you're officially too damn lazy to earn my motherfucking money.

What was the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak?
Was I the only one who thought this was going to be a rant against the Wii?

**Also: I will keep buying any excellent games about space marines that are put out there (or are you really skipping Gears of War 2, Justin?). But, when a genre is saturated, you have to really stand out to be noticed. Maybe try something else? Developers, are you listening?

I have similar feelings about World War II.

Fracture. I gave the demo a try after Alex endorsed it in the Force Unleashed article he posted today, but after checking themail, I found out one of my neighbors actually bought it, and I played a few minutes of a later level.

The terrain building stuff is interesting and some pretty impressive destruction but take those two things away, and you're left with nothing that I wasn't seeing back when I first played Halo. If this is really how far we've come in the last 7 fucking years, something is terribly wrong.

I hated Gears 1. Sounded amazing on paper, but I'm still disappointed in the lot of you for continuing to drink that game's Kool Aid after actually playing it.

So yeah, I have no interest whatsoever in the sequel.
Thank you Justin. I wasn't impressed with Gears either. It's monumentally average.

To each their own. I thought, and still think, GeOW's pacing, cover oriented gameplay, and impressive (still the best?) graphics brought something new to the table. That being said, I played through most of the game on Co-op, which, IMHO, is where the game really shines.

With you on Fracture.

Gears of War is such a stupid fucking game.
I certainly didn't get what all of the fuss was about on 'Gears of War', either. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who felt that way.
Fracture actually feels like a weird 3rd person Halo done right. That'll probably scare you off even more, though.

And Gears of War is awesome, especially in co-op. Played through the game something like 3 times with different friends.
I liked Gears campaign but the multiplayer was a waste of disc space.
I hate Gears of War so much, and hate the shit out of the main guy in Fracture after having only played a demo. To summaries, I'm right there with you Justin.
I guess he won't be pre-ordering Starcraft II.

GoW is fun as hell Co-Op. Only way to play that game.
You'll laugh, but I actually broke out my old Atari 2600 a couple of weeks ago to see if it would work. Archaic graphics and all, it still plays fine (I have an older tv to hook it up to). Apart from playing Rock Band 2, I've been cranking on the Atari and having a blast.

I'm sorry, but all the great graphics in the world won't make me buy your game if it's a fucking chore to play.

What level did you play? Your friend must've been lucky, it doesn't come out for a week.
What if they were Space Marines, but they had to fight underwater? Or in Hell? Or would they then be Hell Marines?

I kept trying to like Gears of War. Never happened.

What about Broken Helix? The Campbell factor?

Seriously, in a post-Bioshock/Portal/Call of Duty 4 world, there's no excuse for developers to graze this same stale-ass pasture without pushing the envelope in some way shape or form, and the terrain deformation in Fracture just does not cut it against everything that game does that other games have done better.

You know what game did terrain deformation right? Magic Carpet. And that was something like 810 years ago.
Shit, you are right.
Magic carpet was awesome.
Gears is a good game. The Co Op is fun as hell, but the story is shit (I keep thinking I missed something...). But I will tell you that it's a great way to spend a day when you're sick as a dog with the flu. Keeps you occupied.
I will be buying the Aliens FPS when it comes along, but yeah - I generally agree that it's a lazy setup.

In my eyes though, a good game's a good game. Doesn't matter what form of employment the protagonist is in.

EDIT: Haze and Jericho seem to back up the "shit Space Marine stuff" theory.
Yeah, I made the same kind of remark on another board recently, and after playing Fracture too (albeit only the demo).

The tutorial for this, btw, is perhaps the most cynically irksome one I have ever witnessed. As you are led through the motions of learning the controls and the HUD, your character keeps remarking that "this is fairly standard" or "how great, I blew up a shed". Cause there's nothing that will make a standard as fuck tutorial less boring than actually acknowledging how rote it is, eh. Look at how self-consciouscly meta we are!

Ugh.

God, I used to love the shit out of that game.
The multiplayer is mediocre, but you have to be a basement dweller to not enjoy the GOW campaign, it's a fucking blast with friends.
You have to be the king of all nerd archetypes to not enjoy the grim and gritty adventures of Captain Overcompensation and his Ethnic Stereotypes in the Grey World of Gore?

That's news to me.
Regardless of the fact that I enjoyed the brief time I spent with GoW, I wholly agree on this. Games need to fucking start growing up, and not into more bloodbaths (although, those are occasionally fun)with colorless scenery.
But...but...violence is so wicked! Being an adult means being into dark things! Yeah! All the things my parents didn't want me to be into! Yeah! Blood = maturity! zomg! Heath Ledger's Joker is the best!!1!one

And you'd be right. I went downstairs to say WTF, and apparently, he just has his copy paid for at Gamestop, and was just at the "hold for extraction" part of the demo, using the burrowing rockets, which I never bothered to get to after getting bored. My bad.

That said, I played through that section later, and despite the nifty Tremors-esque feeling of those rockets, it's not enough to keep me engaged. Original point stands.
I agree with you, Justin. I can't even count how many games I've played where you play as a space marine or group of space marines. It's just lazy. I recently booted up Far Cry on the computer, and its fun just because it's different (even though the save feature sucks). An outdoor jungle/island environment is such a nice change of pace after playing so many games that take place in a post-apocalyptic/industrial wasteland, or some alien planet.
gears was fun the first play through on coop with my buddy

every subsequent attempt to play through found me putting it down 4 or 5 min in.

traded for much better things

Sounds like someone wants a refund for his ticket on the COLE-TRAIN, BABY! WOOOO!

Fucking horrendous checkpoint system aside, I had a lot of fun with Gears. The story and characters are monumentally stupid but things blow up pretty.

Fracture
Gears of War
Space Siege
Too Human

I understand the Space Marine hate (and trust me, the story is nothing special in the game) but I really don't get all this hate for the demo. It's just a tutorial level but I think it does a decent job of showing you what you're in store for. I can only say that I wasn't really anticipating the game at all (even having played through the demo) and ended up digging it a whole helluva lot.

Add Crysis and Crysis: Warhead to that list.

I must be missing something - we haven't had an Aliens game this generation? You can't call it in on a list of recent offenders.

But yeah, Turok is probably the worst offender there. Scrapped the less-offensive premise for marines. Yay.
It's in development by Gearbox. That counts.

Besides Gears of War I guess I have instinctively avoided all the games on that list simply due to being shitty games. Too Human uses space marines? I thought they were Norse gods or something.
"Norse gods" in Space Marine attire, followed by dudes who look a heck of alot like the marines from Halo.

Since I did suggest earlier it was a game I planned on buying, i'm aware of its existance - but there have been a handful of FPS Aliens games in dev over the past few years most of which have been scrapped - so its not fair to bunch it in with a shitty Turok sequel.

If any game is entitled to use Space Marines, i'd figure it was the one that initially made them 'cool'.

Not even the Aliens game gets a pass. The fact that Aliens was first just means it'll feel even more dated and cliche.

Not to mention, we console folks have been getting the shaft on the Alien vs Predator FPS goodness PC gamers have been enjoying for years.
I agree with your stance, but if there's ever a Starship Troopers game done right... I AM FUCKING THERE.

Also, Gears of War vs. mode is outright broken(particularly in close quarters combat). Not fun. Agreed with everyone here on co-op though.
I've said it before, I'll say it one more time for the hell of it.

AVP2 is better than Halo.
Agreed. Space Marines in huge armor should stay in Warhammer 40k where they belong.

Hell Marines! I think your on to something here...

So I also guess that Star Craft 2 is off your shopping list? or do RTS games compete on a different level?

I'm on the wagon that says that Aliens while having a space marine in the game, it should not be on your list. Given that the game is based on a series of films. These two games were put out when? 1998 1999? way before this current fade of your friendly neighborhood space marine.

And this means the game will be different and more innovative than the other games with space marines killing alien species with big guns because of what, exactly?

I disagree, sir and challenge thee to a duel. Aliens FPS games are generally of a high quality and deserve that pass.

I agree on the AvP shafting for consoles. AvP and AvP2 are excellent, i'm pretty sure we've had a strategy game and... that's it? Alien Resurrection & Predator: Shitty Concrete Jungle I figure don't count?
