Horror Movie Draft: Discussion - Page 46

Not that I would discourage the love for certain flicks, but I suggest we should disparage the idea of trading in future drafts. Mostly because it's kinda silly.

Oh, fuck off.

I've been in an official type Kirby draft where trades are allowed, but it doesn't happen. It's not a big deal.

In fact, all y'all bitching about rules, bonus rounds, anything else are more than welcome to set up one of these things in the future. I only do it out of love. Kiss my taint.

I should have been stricter on the theatrical release rule, no DTV, but other than the Duel thing, it really wasn't a problem.
Duel is great, but it's less a horror flick than Aliens. Aliens at least has, you know... ALIENS killing people. Scary aliens, at that.

Duel is perfect except the internal monologue. I'd love to see how it plays without that. I think the audience is given all it needs without.
Duel is Halloween with a truck instead of a mask, before Halloween happened.

I dunno if I see that.

I'll admit, Duel is more suspense/thriller than horror, and Aliens is more action/sci-fi than horror, but Aliens still has more fingers in the horror cookie jar.
And Duel doesn't?
I'll go for the nameless/faceless terror/menace bit. But doesn't someone usually die in a horror film? Spoiler(?): The truck driver dies, one assumes.

Don't get me wrong, a death shouldn't be a prerequisite, but I just don't see how Duel is more a horror film than Aliens is. I know lots of people that have had the shit scared out of them by both films, so I'd say both count.
I have to say I do disagree with this whole trading deal. just as I was against a certain someone getting to redraft after picking the wrong JCVD pick. We need to live with the picks we get...and this comes from the guy who has drafted TBC and Heartbreak Ridge
post #2259 of 2477
If somebody had offered to make a trade for TBC, you would've jumped at it in a second. A trade is really no big deal; no sillier than the rest of the draft concept. This is supposed to be fun, remember??

Anyway, I just finished watching EYES WITHOUT A FACE. Excellent selection, sack. Legend for inspiring a Billy Idol song, the film is quietly terrifying. (A forerunner of torture porn?) Ashamed I never got around to this one before. So subtly disturbing.

*SPOILERS*

Something about the idea of being drugged and operated on freaks me out! The face surgery scene must have been a shocker back in the day.
Definitely. That's why the film was so reviled, that and the dog attack scene. Critics couldn't see past the sickening aspects of it to the amazing artistry that went into it.
The dog attack! What a satisfying comeuppance!

Today I'm giving DIABOLIQUE & REPULSION a go.
Regarding Trading:
1. It's Keith's draft to run. If he allows it, he allows it.
2. Their rationale for the trade made sense, thematically.
3. I'm pretty sure that Fuckstick said I could trade him 'The Creeping Flesh' for 'Nosferatu', so I'm on it.

Also, I've got 'Haxan', 'Blood and Black Lace', and 'Videodrome' lined up for viewing. Anderson, thanks for the 25 essentials list.

ETA: My bonus pick is going to bury ALL of you fuckers. I'm counting on Martin to drop it right away...

I think there's at least one film that's been drafted where no one dies.
Having just watched Exorcist III for the first time just now (which turned out to be pretty damn great, actually, sloppy ending aside), I can honestly say that Brad Dourif in this makes Child's Play look like even more fucking ridiculous being drafted here.

One of my favorite unsung 80's horror films (which shall remain nameless) has no death in it. At least no human death.

Dourif's great in a lot of horror films, so there's no need to compare. In fact, I doubt we've seen the last of him.

Nobody dies in POLTERGEIST, off the top of my head. Does anybody die in ROSEMARY'S BABY?

*SPOILERS!*

Hutch dies.
Bless you Fordyce. I'm about to bring my draft back to the States in a very fun way.
I say LAME to the fact we are only get in one pick when it seemed like pretty much everyone liked the idea of having a double feature. Will of the people Savage. Will of the people!
Read the Bonus Round thread, jay.

Fuck the will of the people. You listen to the vox populi, you get stuff like CSI: Miami on for thirty years.

Oh, and like Justin pointed out, read the bonus thread.

Two picks.
Yea I just saw but in fairness I checked right before I posted and it still said 1 pick. Thanks Keith

I've been wondering among myself this whole draft whether I consider Dead Man's Shoes a horror movie.

I loved Rawhead Rex as a kid. I understand it's not a very good movie, but I really would like to watch it again.
Constantine was a great choice, Justin. Cloverfield... not so much.
Mattioli! You get two! Do what you know is right!
Dead Man's Shoes is kind of the best slasher film ever made, in my opinion. And it fucked me a up for a couple of days, getting high and watching that late one night.

I promise you the only enjoyment that movie will give you will be from all the unintentional laughter. Bring booze.
Five-tone and Mattioli both have a film the same, but Mattioli added his after the edit. Who gets it?

EDIT: Never mind, Tommy let him have it.
It's gonna be damn hard to top Mattioli this round.
Mattioli gets it. I'm taking the sequel.
Love Dust Devil. Tommy still wins for me.
Mattioli....has failed me.

EDIT: Nevermind.

I've still never seen Ginger Snaps.
JP....really? I realize I'm the guy who picked King Kong but JP?
A case can be made for JP belonging here, but it's still a weak-sauce pick.
May with the win so far. You can't beat Farmer Vincent's Fritters.
Cool-ass double feature from sackley - ROADKILL is an awesome B-movie, and DEAD MAN'S SHOES can really do a number on you. Paddy Considine's fucking amazing in it.

Like the CONSTANTINE pick too. That movie really stands up to repeat viewings.
I love Constantine waaaaay more than I should.

I'm pleased with my double feature.

Eating Raul? You fucking kidding me? As horror? I've never seen a more straight-forward example of comedy-satire. The cannibalism is downplayed in all cases to the comedy.

Truly great flick, though.

By the way, good job, Nabors. I was going to drop Shivers and something else, but I got distracted.

Good picks.

Perhaps, but it's still every bit as much a horror movie as JAWS and KING KONG are. Heck, Spielberg pays particular attention to making sure the kills are spectacular. Not to mention, kids in danger. And Sam Jackson's bitten off hand makes an appearance.

JP is pretty damn thrilling, and when it's boiled down, it's a monster movie. It belongs.
Snabors and Olsen getting some damn good double bills together.
Besides, I consider THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN a steal. Plus the fact that they make the Baron the villain of the series is inspired.

Joyride is a favorite of mine. "Candy Cane."

Love Nightbreed. Curse of Frankie could have indeed been first or second round material.

You guys are awesome.

Not denying JP isn't thrilling or enjoyable at all as a whole. But as a horror film? It's kinda limp, especially compared to another Spielberg flick still on the table that flat out scares the living shit out of me.

Leave Always out of this.

Not familiar with Elvis' picks. At all. Probably should be.
I think the Hammer Frankensteins are awesome. Curse of Frank is a true steal.

Shout out to Mr. Nabors, who picked the two early cool Cronenbergs.

Also dig the Village of the Damned & Bad Seed combo.

I've been meaning to watch Twitch of the Death Nerve for years. This month seems like a good time.

Then again, my Bava ignorance doesn't stop there by a long shot.
