Horror Movie Draft: Discussion - Page 50

Watched Vampyr (1932) this morning. Not a great film, but has some serious camera work going on. Atmospheric, lead's not half bad, and makes good use of shadows/shadowtricks. A german film, and really pretty close to a silent in a lot of respects.

Recommended for vampire completists and folks with an eye for b/w cinematography.

Angel Heart: Oh, hey, that was pretty awesome. I loved the whole horror-noir aspect of it. I think I've read this comparison before, but it really did kind of remind me of Hellblazer, moreso than "Constantine." And De Niro was the shit.

Peeping Tom is on TCM tonight at 10:00 EST, followed by Strait Jacket at midnight.

Psycho is on at 8:00, if by chance anybody reading this site has not seen that one.

POTENTIAL ANGEL HEART SPOILER

Angel Heart is the movie that I want to lend to every High Tension fan and say, "See, that's how it's done!"

If you ever thought to yourself, "What I really want to see is Mickey Rourke having passionate sex with Lisa Bonet- but definitely with buckets of blood raining down on them," then Angel Heart is indeed your movie.

Isn't there a director's cut out there floating around? Are there significant differences?

RE: ANGEL HEART
I believe, the special edition DVD is the director's cut.

The funny thing about PEEPING TOM is it took all the cultural heat and critical outrage, all but destroying Michael Powell's career. An important film, knocked down the door and paved the way for Hitch's PSYCHO and modern horror.

I'm probably going to follow up a second viewing of Angel Heart (because I dug it that much) with Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
I just watched Angel Heart again a few weeks ago, and it didn't really hold up for me. The more I think about it, the more I think it was the acting that put me off, not the story. I did like it the first time I saw it, though.

Just saw Henry for the first time this week. Some of the gore is pretty incredible, considering it feels like a low-budget production. Ottis really is a great character, just a completely fucked up person. What's interesting is that Henry is more obviously disturbed, but at least works on some kind of moral level, whereas Ottis is just like any hillbilly ex-con in any bar in the South, and is actaully even more messed up than maybe even Henry is.

Also re-watched Ravenous. Still a very good, slyly humorous, absolutely blood-drenched film with what is becoming one of my favourite scores of the last decade or so from Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn.

That's what makes Henry so creepy to me. The fact that he seems sort of sane and practical at times makes him even more psychotic.

The release dates on these movies are one month separated of the same year. Peeping Tom didn't release in the US till two years after Psycho.

PEEPING TOM took the brunt of the conservative moral outrage. I believe the film was banned in some quarters. Hitchcock was able to slide his (almost) equally disturbing film in sans controversy. I'm sure his name brand didn't hurt. (However Jimmy Stewart took some heat for making ANATOMY OF A MURDER-frank dealings with sex/sexuality was still socially taboo)

Michael Powell was one of the most important and brilliant filmmakers to emerge out of British cinema post-Hitchcock. He was a big deal; creating some unique masterpieces. Yet, the ahead-of-its-time psycho sexual PEEPING TOM, for all intents and purposes, stopped his career dead.

I'm doing my best to atone for my sins and picked up The Texas Chain Saw Massacre last week. Unfortunately, my wife is freaked out by the very idea of the film, which probably makes it a later watch.

This has nothing to do with horror, but I fucking love that movie so, so much.

I finally watched THE UNSEEN. Not a bad little flick. (Would make for a good double bill w. TOURIST TRAP)
Unfortunately, the DVD comes with an annoying intro that pretty much gives away that the "unseen" monster is

SPOILER

the annoying fat guy from Animal House! Really is a bit of a mood killer.

Barbara Bach actually turned out to be a decent scream queen though.

(I don't know about back in the day, but the football boyfriend's "rescue" plays almost high camp today)

I had the opportunity to watch Cat People last night for the first time in years. Man, what a great horror film. I say "horror", but it is very much an odd little example of film noir. Genre directors working today need to go back and watch this to learn a little bit about subtlety.

Agree. The mundane details of his actions were the "scary" parts.

Yeah, it's like putting the Statue of Liberty on the DVD of Planet of the Apes. But the performance he gives once he shows up is unheralded genius!

I also want to thank this thread for getting me off my ass to watch The Mist (in b&w). HPL meets NOTLD. Loved it.
I've got to watch THE MIST in b&w soon. Seems like everyone agrees that's a far better version than the theatrical, which I already enjoyed a bunch.

Yeah, it takes a damn good movie and turns it into one that borders on greatness. We watched it as part of our Halloween movie marathon this year, and the people who had never seen it before absolutely loved it, while those who had only seen it in color agreed that this was the superior version.

I love that movie.
It's the only version I've seen so far, and I think aside from aligning it more closely with the films it's riffing on, it tends to mute some of the plastic look from the cgi. I'll be picking it up when I go HD.
The Mist doesn't come out til next Modnay over here, but I've got the 2-disc pre-ordered. Can't wait for the black and white version, but I don't know which version to show the housemates. None of them have seen it and one of the girls is just starting to get into horror (she rocked the shit out of Dead Set last week). Since I don't think they'll sit through it twice, do I go with the colour or the b&w?

If you're getting one shot at it, go with the B&W. In my humble opinion, it makes the film's atmosphere infinitely more creepy. As an added bonus, it tends to soften some of the weaker CGI (although that's never bothered me as much as some others on these boards).
Yeah, fuck it. If they can't accept black and white, they're really gonna balk by the time the ending comes around.
I mentioned it in the Personal Achievements thread but it seems more at home here: I was stoked to discover that my review had been quoted on the cover of THE MIST's Australian DVD. If I'm gonna be a quote whore, I'm glad I gave it up for something so worthwhile.

Oh, and the B&W version of the movie works a treat.

Thanks to the Horror Draft, I caught up with two films I hadn't seen: 2000 Maniacs and Eyes Without a Face. The first is just a glorious piece of trash. The second has all the pretensions of an arthouse film (which it was), but can't quite escape its horror trappings. Both were entirely worth the watch. So, thanks, Horror Draft, you've done it again.
