Horror Movie Draft: Discussion - Page 2

Well, at least there's comfort in knowing that the first 2 picks are Carpenters. Nice work you bastards.
picks one and two are in the wrong order.
Oh no they aren't.
Whatever. They're such different films, I don't think they can really be compared, outside of how effective they are. I'll grant, they're probably both masterpieces, but I admire Halloween, while I love The Thing. And it STILL gives me the willies.

ETA: Is anyone going to start a lists thread? Is that Keith's domain?
Now two of my five dream picks are gone. It is very early but this draft is going just how I figured
post #56 of 2477
There are people that really thought they might get away with The Thing and Halloween if they weren't in the first group. That's so adorable.
Agreed Clark. When I saw when I was picking I scratched about 10 movies off my list.

If Keith would rather delegate that duty to someone else, and nobody in the draft wants to do it, I will. Just know that the list wouldn't be updated until pretty late each day, because I probably wouldn't be able to get to it until right before I go to bed each night.
so.......horror movies...
Hard to go wrong with THE THING or HALLOWEEN to start things off. There are a couple others that seem obvious too that are likely to go early.

I salute the first two for not screwing up. The surprises will begin later.
So, if neither Anderson nor Tommy draft by 10:00, does the next group get to go anyways?

That, sir, is the truth.

But a pair of excellent first round choices.
Anderson said to skip him anyway, but whether Tommy shows up or not, once your slot's up, you're on the clock.

Yes. I remember Tommy missing a lot of deadlines on drafts.

Let's remember people, 10h00 sharp. No 9h59!

And NO NAMING OTHER MOVIES DURING YOU PICK.
I watch The Thing and Halloween both for the first time within about a month of each other, two years ago.

Halloween was fun to appreciate. It was nice seeing the beginnings of a genre, seeing the effective simplicity, and imagining how scary it must have been. I enjoyed appreciating and respecting the movie as a piece of iconography and genre history.

The Thing actually scared the hell out of me. It was entertaining, exciting, frightening and just perfect. There's little to nothing about that movie that isn't still perfectly effective in an active and visceral sense. The Thing does not need any amount of historical appreciation to enjoy it.

Removed from history/iconography, existing in a contextual vacuum, there is no comparison between the two movies.

Not this time!

Sorry, guys, I didn't know if I had to wait until 9.45am to post my draft, so I thought I'd wait.

I actually meant the thread where we update our own lists, but we'll need a chosen thread more urgently, I guess.

I'm happy to help as well.
Ooh, not at all what I expected to go as a third pick. Nice one.
And again, Anderson said yesterday to skip him, so, 10am crew, you're up.
While not would I would call this early of this round pick its still a strong pick and if it fits your needs who can blame ya

Meanwhile Savage goes with #3 off my dream five
post #71 of 2477
Alright, let's go!
There would be something WRONG with the universe if 'the Thing' and 'Halloween' didn't go in the first round. When I saw where I was positioned in the draft, I automatically wrote those two off.
Well, The Thing and Body Snatchers getting picked raped one of my possible themes. Now to see if I can get away with the other one.
Savage you filthy CUNT!
Fuck you, Martin.

Both ARE perfect horror movies IMO, The Thing being more so that way because it hits on all the hallmarks of the genre: gore, psychological scares, not knowing who to trust, and the plain idea of terror.
Well, my favorite horror was snatched away, so I went with my #2. Thank you Tati. Both Alien and The Thing still works wonders, and are true classics, regardless of the genre. And Alien had so much influence...
I feel the same way about Alien as I do Halloween. Love what it is and represents, missed the train on actually having a personal connection with it.
Nice pick, Tommy.

Loved the way the movie used to end with McCarthy running through the streets shouting, "They're here! They're here!"

A lot more effective than the actual uncut version where he reaches outside authorities, they believe him, and the day is saved. <Boo!>
post #80 of 2477
You are dead inside Renn.
Four FANTASTIC picks so far.
Ten minutes early?

Not sure what this means. Do you mean you have to have a personal connection for either of these movies to work at their intended level?
I might be fucked for my timeslot today...I've been hit with some meetings that overlap with my pick time. Unless things speed up and I can draft early, I may need someone to do my pick for me. Who's free during my pick time of 12-1, CST, 1-2 EST?

Edited to correct pick time timezone.
I repeat: When all the drafters in a slot have drafted or given permission to skip over them, the next group can draft.
I'm sticking around today, Judas. PM me.
Judas, PM me
And phil leaves one movie left from the five movies I would have picked if I could have anything.
Thanks, Justin. We'll see how it goes. If I'm going to miss it, I'll send you an ordered list.

This is partly why I didn't participate. Thought there would be a lot of this. Horror has always provided my biggest generational disconnect with many other Chewers. I really do like these movies, but after so many years of being parodied, of being icons, it's hard for many of them to have their gut-reaction power. You can't imagine how excited I was to sit down with Alien for the first time! I knew what I was watching was excellent, but it just couldn't scare me.

Things like remakes/sequels are partly to blame, I suspect. So fuck those movies even harder.
I must confess my sin, I've never seen THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. Definitely something I need to remedy.

I'm very fond of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS as an early first rounder. That one still works, although I agree that it would be better without the tacked on coda. I believe "You're next!" was the ending though.
The later round are going to have some of the shittiest movies in them.
Dude, Stop naming movies. Specially if you are not Playing!
Edit your post!
The first five picks are in the wrong order.

(last time, I promise)

Ahem, name dropping this early in the draft? For shame.
And terrific pic by Mattioli!

Renn, seriously, edit your post.

I meant it more the other way around. I assume most were scared by these movies at one point or another, and that forged a personal connection that allows them to appreciate the movie for what it is, and enjoy it more emotionally too. I guess you could consider it nostalgia? Except, for a good movie that actually holds up.

I'm takin' you back to the old school,
Cuz I'm an old fool
who is so cool,
If you want to get down,
let me show you the way...

Dracula!
really Renn how about you just tell everyone everything they should draft for the rest of this thing and we can all go home early.
Justin and Tati...thank you both for offering to do my pick. I appreciate the offers to assist in my list failage.
