What Are You Drinkin'? - Page 6

I had a glass of Lagaluvin over the hoildays, and I have to say it isn't for me. Too smoky, it tastes like these Japanese stomach pills that are made from creosote. They're disgusting, but they work better than Pepto or Immodium.

All that is to say that Lagaluvin doesn't remind me of any normal booze. I prefer the smoothness of Glenfidditch. And I won't turn down a shot of Jameson or Powers.

I'll give the MacAllan a chance next time I'm in the mood for scotch. I find that a good scotch over ice gives me an extremely pleasant buzz. Any other kind of booze requires a mixer. Although, I do love me a good vodka mixed with seltzer (flavored or regular.) Fizzy, tasty and not at all sweet.

On that note, sugary drinks of any kind give me instant hangover when I'm really drinking. Best thing to help you out when tearing it up is water, or maybe a sugar-free sports drink if you're really hurting.

Jameson with a bit of ginger ale. And to fix up a hangover? Couple bags of lactated ringer will fix you right up.

Absinthe (55% alcohol)

Doing the whole ritual, too: Perforated spoon on top of glass, pour booze on sugar cube, light it on fire and pour cold water in.

I feel just like Johnny Depp!

Ahhhh memories of Prague....

Me? Im enjoying a lovely cab sav quaffer, with a bit of good Tasmanian chocolate after devouring my much better halfs divine stuffed giant zucchinis (picked fresh from my mums veggie garden) with a beautiful chicken mince, mushroom, garlic and oregano filling.

Hard living I tell ya...

Absinthe give such a great buzz. I recall reading an article where part of the rationale for banning it was the effect it had on people like Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, etc....the rejoinder was "first off, those guys were kinda bent to start with; secondly, I think the OPIUM THEY SMOKED was more the problem than the absinthe."

Give us a Magners, with lots of ice, and make sure it's in a long glass... please.

I want absinthe. Isn't the stuff out now not the real deal? Someone break it down for me.

All I know right now is that some of it is, some of it isn't. About $50 a bottle.

I just recently finally found a place to buy a decent selection of beer in Montreal - in the back of a cheese shop. No longer will I pine for Ontarian beer stores. I'm spending the new year working through the full list of Quebec stouts and noires. Starting with Peche Mortel (there are accents missing there) from Dieu Du Ciel, a strong coffee stout.

None of it was ever what it was reputed to be. "Real" absinthe contains thujone derived from wormwood (when comes the name, wormwood being Artemisia absinthium). Wormwood contains a psychoactive toxin called Thujone, but it's not present in absinthe in quantities sufficient to have any effect (see here) - it was banned after experiments showing that pure wormwood oil is quite toxic, since nobody at the time knew what the specific toxin was or how much was actually present in the liquor. The ban on wormwood-containing absinthe is still enforced in some places, but you can get the original in parts of Europe. The only real active ingredient is alcohol, ranging up to 70%. It's actually pretty disgusting, unfortunately, but the "good" stuff is a very pretty shade of green, and it'll get 'em drunk as effectively as anything else.

Your best shot at getting the real deal is getting stuff from France, since they have the best laws in place. Just check the label so it says Extrait d'Absinthe and not Liquer d'Absinthe. The first use actual wormwood extract (which is what gives absinthe its characteristics) while the others are just anise flavored alcohol. If you can't find the real stuff you might as well buy ouzo and save yourself some money. Proper Absinthe can easily cost up to 150$ a bottle.

And if you want to drink it the old fashioned way, don't set it on fire.

I shoulda mentioned that my bottle doesn't have thujone...it's illegal in the Canadian Maritimes where I live. In British Columbia, the thujone content is not regulated, and the amount varies in most of the provinces in between. Thujone effects apparently might only be bullshit. Alcohol percentage can be as high as 89.9%....might wanna cut it with some Sprite, or whatever.

Yow, I remember that stuff from when I was 17, and hadn't acquired a taste for beer yet. At the time, the only Alcopop was Zima, so Cider was a good alternative. I definitely don't miss it though. Word of warning Eric, you're drinking a LOT of sugar. Get plenty of water in tonight or your head is gonna be killing you tomorrow.

I always kinda liked Woodpecker cider, though. . .
It's not bad. Come to think of it, Woodpecker was the first hard cider I had. I will give Cider this, my friends with gluten allergies seem to love it as a nice alternative to beer.

They do make gluten-free beers these days. I had a friend in from the Bay Area on business, his boss was gluten-allergic and I said "hey, try this stuff"; initially he begged off saying he tried gluten-free beers before and they were heinous.

Then I saw him with one in his hand...he finished it, and had another...and another. So I'm guessing it wasn't too bad.

I had two of the Woodchucks and I already have a headache. Switching to nice, normal, harmless vodka now.

Ah, I'm an idiot*. I almost bought Guinness tonight, too. Oh well.

*I used to work at a bar and a black and tan never even crossed my mind.

It's still "sweet" for a draught drink, but the Guinness helps.

My pa told me that one of the quickest ways to get pissed is Guinness with Barley Wine, which sounds pretty much like your black velvet, though he said to have it in a pint glass not a champagne flute.Apparently, you just need to have the one and you'll be flat on ya ass.

When out and about i'm generally a Guiness man but i'll have the odd pint of London Pride. At home i'll drink Pedigree or Old Speckled Hen.

The only lager i can say i genuinely enjoy drinking is Red Stripe, which at times can be hard to find on tap.

One of the worst spirits i've had is Grappa.

I've lately been mixing various cocktails with diet sodas. I'm impatient these days.

Most recently, it's been Sailor Jerry's* with a splash of diet Coke and about half a lime.

*Captain Morgan got his ass kicked by Sailor Jerry.
