Remake a remake!

Thread Starter
Let's try to keep some sort of format to this. It may be a bit of pointless fan-casting/wanking, but it could be fun. Let's try to keep this to films that have been remade, and failed, and could have conceivably been made in the same year. So no, David Fincher couldn't have remade everything.

The damage has already been done, where could they have gone instead?

Rollerball(2002)
What went wrong:
Director: John McTiernan, responsible for two of the greatest action films ever(one of which is arguably a perfect modern action film), and a fantastic thriller, fucked up. His remake of the 1975 James Caan-starring, Norman Jewison-directed film is a hyperactive, over-edited, miscast mess(Chris Klein? Hahahaha). The sport itself doesn't even make any sense, something the original made almost crystal clear. With McTiernan(even if he was past his "prime"), this should have turned out decent. But nope, it's awful.

Where they should have gone:

Rollerball(2002*)
Director: Paul Verhoeven, who would bring the ultra-violence, dark comedy, and social commentary this remake could have used. Also, there's a good chance the film(and sport depicted within) would be coherent.
Cast:
Jonathan- An unknown, but charismatic actor, who has better acting chops than Casper Van Dien, and is a good bit older.
The rugged co-star of the sport(Moonpie in the original)- Clancy Brown
The evil ratings-craving overlord: Gary Oldman(being British, for the first time in a while)? Christopher Walken? Caan himself?
The retired idol/mentor- Arnold, or Sly(probably a better choice). Either would work well.

*Totally making up for Hollow Man, which squandered an awesome concept, yet provided us with some great CHUD DVD review screengrab captions over the years, thanks mostly to Nick.

THE GETAWAY (1994)
Not a disaster, but pointless considering that it's little more than a scene-for-scene remake. More interesting would've been a film that gets closer to the Jim Thompson novel, keeping the original third act where Doc and Carol meet their fate in El Ray. Robinson Devor, who adapted Charles Willeford's strange brand of hardboiled quite masterfully for THE WOMAN CHASER (1999), would be a good pick to write and direct.

PAYBACK (1999)
Even in his director's cut Helgeland didn't do the novel justice, and the film doesn't hold a candle to the original (POINT BLANK). I would remove Lucy Liu's character, and all of the Chinese gangsters and crooked cops who turn up in the most contrived manner. Walter Hill would be the right match for this material.

I would have liked to see a Rollerball remake done right. What we got was total garbage on every level. The fact that even the guys behind the movie had no idea what the 'sport' was suppose to play like is extremely damning. I still like the original, but would have liked to seen an updated remake with some new ideas.

'The Truth About Charlie'(2002) - A remake of 'Charade' (1963)
What Went Wrong: Demme replaced Cary Crant, Audrey Hepburn, and Walter Mathau with Mark Fucking Wahlberg,Thandie Fucking Newton, and Tim Fucking Robbins???? All the wit and humor from the original is gone, gone, gone. This is a lifeless remake that attempts to pay homage to French New Wave and fails miserably.

What should have been done:
Steven Soderbergh should have done this remake. Cast George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Andy Garcia in the three main roles and make it like an 'Ocean's' movie and you would have had a winner.

'The Wicker Man' (2006) - a remake of 'The Wicker Man' (1973)
What Went Wrong: Do a search on youtube for 'nicolas cage wicker man' and observe what went wrong. This is one of the most unintentionally funny movies of all time.

What should have been done:
Option 1: Have David Fincher do the remake and go REALLY dark and realistic.
OPtion 2: Have David Lynch do the remake and go surreal.

This.

'Halloween' (2007) - A remake that wasn't needed, made by a Director that had nothing worthwhile to say to even justify it, and took everything away from Michael Myers that made him scary in the first place by attempting to explain what made him the way he is.

However, if we must remake this film -

Halloween Remake - Redone
Directed by: Chan-Wook Park
Cast: I don't care who plays Laurie Strode, but Jessica Biel is playing the character PJ Soles did.

Instead of Hollywood constantly adapting Asian horror films, I think we should let an Asian director do a remake of a Hollywood horror film. At least it would be interesting.

Given that the original Psycho had its twist ending being Norman and not the mother doing the killings, would it have been a horrible idea for Van Sant to do his shot-for-shot remake and have the twist be that it's actually mother as the killer?

PLANET OF THE APES (2001): I'm a fan of Tim Burton, but besides hiring Rick Baker (and maybe casting MC Duncan and Tim Roth), his version leaves too much to be desired (I kinda like the percussion-heavy Elfman score). Not many people can fill Heston's shoes. I secretly wanted Arnie directed by Cameron, but since that almost happened, I'll try to be more original and go in a slightly different direction than the studio's big budget popcorn flick.

GHOSTS OF MARS gets abandoned that year and instead John Carpenter directs PLANET OF THE APES (2001). He either casts relative unknown Jason Statham (fresh off his Ritchie team-ups) front & center (instead of 3rd fiddle in GoM under Henstridge and Cube) or better yet, Kurt Russell, as Taylor and brings in Keith David as a villain (for a THING reunion). Carpenter utilizes his remake expertise (THE THING, one of the best remakes ever) to direct an efficiently-budgeted, and extremely violent post-apocalyptic (another Carpenter strength) scifi actioner. He convinces Baker to bring Rob Bottin (THE THING) out of retirement to help and get re-energized (who's return to Hollywood helps jump-start a Renaissance of practical makeup FX). Also, Ennio Morricone (another THING alum) swings by to inject his special brand of score (and to make amends for MISSION TO MARS the previous year). Due to the low budget, the flick makes enough to warrant a sequel, Carpenter's career gets a boost (and he decides to not sit on his ass for all this time collecting checks for remakes of his own movies... like HALLOWEEN in post #6), and FOX has a new franchise to screw up eventually.
