Shows You're Just Now Getting Into

Are there any shows you guys kept telling yourselves and/or your friends that you would watch but are just now finally watching?

Last Friday after closing the office, I noticed at my local Super Wal-Mart that all three seasons of Arrested Development were on sale for $15 each. So I bought the first season anticipating that I'd check out an episode or two during the weekend, but wound up finishing the entire set in one night(!)

So of course, the next day I bought the other two seasons. I know, I know. I'm a little late getting into Arrested Development, but damn what a brillant show.

"30 Rock" all the way.

"The Wire". :: hangs head in shame :: At least I don't have to wait five years to complete it!

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I'd seen a few clips on YouTube, but I finally watched the entire first season on Hulu over the weekend and absolutely adore it.

Arrested Development is also on hulu, by the way. The whole thing.

*Pats your back*

Actually that was the other DVD set I bought last Friday. But I got so into Arrested Development that I put asside The Wire until I finished that series.

Farscape. So far, a fresh take on the band-of-misfits-on-a-spaceship theme, if lacking the specific identity of a Firefly.
Farscape gets better as you go, but I think that has a lot to do with the whole not getting cancelled after 11 episodes thing.

We've made a habit in the past few months of catching up on shows on DVD. Got through Weeds up to the beginning of the current season, went through a season and change of Mad Men before starting to watch this season as it airs, and just got through the first season of Six Feet Under. Since there are a few more seasons' worth of commitment there, The Wire is going to have to wait.

We've also had the first disc of the first season of Venture Brothers (which I've watched off and on) from Netflix for weeks, but haven't gotten to it yet.
Why are there still people who haven't seen The Wire? Fix it!

I've been getting into 30 Rock recently, for some reason I never watched it until a week ago. Dexter is another one.
Over the summer I watched all of The Wire, The Shield and Weeds. Right now my next pursuits are Carnivale, Brisco County Jr and Oz. Being from the UK has kinda left me catching up with stuff from years back that I had no access to before I discovered the wonderful world of torrents.

I was a season late to Mad Men. It's my new favorite show.

Then crashes and burns spectacularly towards the end.

I watch almost nothing for the first season or two. I can't stand cancelled shows. It drives me insane. So I wait to see if they pan out, then I watch them.

Most recently did that with The Wire, BSG, Firefly (damn), Buffy, Angel, Nip/Tuck, 24, Alias, Dexter, Entourage, Prison Break (a guilty pleasure), and myriad others.

Lost. I just finished season 2 minutes ago. Absolutely in love with it, but do not look forward to what I hear is a very tedious first half to season 3.

Pushing Daisies. I saw a couple episodes on TV, and a few more online, and really liked this show. I've set up my DVR to record new episodes, but need to get the first season set from Netflix.
How I envy people seeing Lost for the first time. I dream of mind rubbers.
Next on my Netflix queue: Spaced. (stands next to Doc Happenin and hangs head in shame)
Just got into 30 Rock. I've to admit that it sure earns its chops.

"I am going to be a single mom. Like Sarah Connor. Or Erin Brokervich."

I was late to Dead Like Me, The Sopranos, and The Wire. Have yet to see Mad Men but will eventually pick it up. Mainly, I'm on top of network shows. But hour long cable dramas are hard to fit into my schedule.

So you're part of the reason the show was canceled!

Carnival is one of my all time favorite shows. Unfortunately it ended before the real meat of the story kicks in. You do get a decent resolution, although you'll wonder forever what could have been.

Carnivale, the show that marked the beginning of the end for HBO.

I have a ton of shit on my hard drive I need to catch up on, like the second seasons of Mad Men and Burn Notice.

After that they had Deadwood and Rome, which kicked all kinds of ass, and another solid 4 years of Sopranos and the Wire. If you want to use one show as a placeholder for the decline of HBO dramas, I'd go with John From Cincinnati. It has the distinction of actually killing Deadwood.

Btw, if anyone hasn't gotten into Deadwood, fucking do it already. There were plenty of places left for them to go when it was canceled, but there's 3 seasons of absolute greatness there.

If you can make it through season two, you can make it through season three. There are some mediocre episodes (and one really bad one; who gives a shit about Jack's tattoos?), but I was watching some of my favorite ones last weekend and they were even better than I remember.

I've been watching some Spaced episodes lately, and I'm definitely going to buy the DVDs.

I won't have anything bad said about Carnivale. Even against BSG, Lost, The Wire and Dexter it's a remarkable piece of Television.

I'm just catching up with 'It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia' and 'Flight of the Conchords' after accidently stumbling across episodes from both shows and laughing my ass off.

Me too. Someone loaned us the first season about six months ago. We finally got around to watching it last weekend. Love the look, love the acting and love the story. Just a whole bunch of fun.

We also have the first seasons of Dexter and The Wire to get to. It's going to be a great winter.

I was referring to its cancellation before it had a chance to play out its arc. It set a precedent for both "big budget risky shows" for the network which continued with Rome and Deadwood, and for cancellation. Because both those shows were cancelled.

Also, the "JFC killed Deadwood" thing: Again, I think it's unfair, because there were a number of other things going on at the network at that time. Milch isn't the only one to blame for Deadwood getting the ax. And I personally think there's a lot to love about JFC. Not as much as there is about Deadwood, but still, a lot to love.

I was at college homecoming this weekend and while sobering up a little at the hotel, one of the other guys had me watch "It's always sunny in Philidelphia" It was pretty funny and I anticipate watching more on HULU.

I also have been watching Cheers and Night Court reruns in the morning while I get dressed. I watched them both when I was a kid and enjoyed them but now that I am older, I find both shows hilarious and am suprised by the amount of serious drama both show had at times, and how great the acting was to go from those moments to comedy in a moments notice. Both shows crush any sitcom on television now. Why can't we write and produces shows like these anymore. Cheers is hands down the best sitcom ever produced.

Dexter. And the Wire S1 and BSG are still waiting deep in my HD.

I agree with all the praises for 30', Carnivale and Farscape.

House (which I am trying to catch up on) and we're considering doing Heroes on DVD. Just wrapping up Freaks and Geeks.

Re: Carnivale - It was a total victim of HBO's hubris while they had their big guns (Oz, Sopranos, Curb, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under) in their prime and felt they could do no wrong. They were well aware that the very expensive, eclectic show they were producing had a six year plan, and even encouraged the padding of the first season. Then when their new crop failed to produce a new Sopranos in terms of popularity, they cut it short just when the story was paying off. That being said, it was a bizarre, high-budget show that was pulling in disappointing (for the time and place) ratings, and the plan for the show kind of demanded that if they were going to do one more season, they'd have to do two.

Re: JFC - I only watched about 3 eps, and it was vaguely intriguing, but the fact is that no matter how you allocate blame for the decision, there was room for either it or Deadwood, and the latter got the axe.

I went in angry at JFC on account of Deadwood going away a year early, but I liked what JFC was trying to do. It might have crashed and burned into awfulness had it continued, but I would have been right there finding out first hand.

Even if I go to Hell for this, I'll still come clean. After multiple attempts, I could never get into The Sopranos.
We ditched cable (except for the cheapy local channels) and went to Netflix-only just to catch up on old stuff. Season 3 of The Wire is on it's way, but there's a backlog 30' deep of Mad Men, Weeds, Lost, The Tudors, a few seasons of Oz and a lot of that other HBO/Shotime stuff we never had access to. By the time we catch up on all that I'm sure there will be plenty of new stuff going on now to fill the void.

While I'm not sure it would be any good now, I can't believe I'm 33 and have never seen an episode of A-Team. Gotta rectify that to some extent...
OK, after getting into Season 3 of Lost today...everyone better damn well get into that show...TODAY. Free in HD on ABC.com. Get to it people.

Is Ugly Betty worth getting into? I saw two episodes at my dad's house during family get togethers, and the design and some of the dialog seemed to make it kind of Pushing Daises in a sense...but I have a bad feeling it's going to turn into just late night melodrama if I actually sit down and watch it.

Which is exactly what happens. Ugly Betty had a fun first season, but like nearly every other show of its ilk, it turned into shit during the second.

The West Wing. After seeing it name dropped so much in the political threads I decided to check it out.Just finished the 1st season and l'm diggin it.Hope seasons 2-7 are just as strong.
Nice to see Farscape gets mentioned. That seems to have been forgotten about it.
The second season of West Wing is easily one of the greatest seasons of a television show ever. There are no bad episodes, no good episodes. Only very good to legendary.

I think that shows like A-Team, Dukes of Hazzard and Knight Rider are only good if you watched them as a little kid; re-watching them today is only good for nostalgic purposes because, let's face it, those shows were pretty god damned terrible. They were perfect when we were 8 years old because they were not very complex and they had cars and explosions.*

*Hope I didn't insult any Michael Bay fans.
Just wrapped up the 3 seasons of Deadwood. I had to watch it back to back it was too good.

Just starting The Shield now, so I have about 6.5 seasons of a great show to watch. After that, The Wire. I love watching TV on DVD.

I'm usually a year behind on shows, especially the ones on the pay channels, as I don't watch enough TV to justify the expense. I'm having a blast with Chuck and Pushing Daisies right now too, and I have Mad Men to get back into.

It's great to only watch the good stuff from TV and skip the shit.

I'm 36 and haven't seen them. Not really interested either, so don't beat yourself up too bad. You're not alone.
I marathoned the last two discs of Chuck Season One last weekend, now I'm going to give Rescue Me a shot.
First two seasons of Rescue Me are great.

It's a bit dicey avoiding spoilers (I'm mid-Season 3 of BSG now) but made it through Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and Deadwood this way.

On BSG and Curb Your Enthusiasm (I've seen eps here and there) now, Twin Peaks (missed Season 2 the first time around), Millennium and Sleeper Cell are waiting.

Someday I'll get to The Shield, The Wire, Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Murder One, Undeclared, Lost, Heroes, and Smiley's People.
I've just started watching Dexter...it's great.
