I started my Halloween celebration a few days ago with some horror films. I ended up watching Vacancy for the first time. Honestly, it's pretty entertaining and decently directed (especially the first half). Despite that, I'd still probably label it with a five out of ten.
Firstly, you can only see so many "car breaks down at the wrong place at the wrong time" movies before it gets kind of old. Secondly, the direction isn't as tight once the couple starts finding ways to get outside of the room. Lastly, the movie gets less scary as it goes on.
The scariest stuff for me was the rampant knocking on the doors toward the beginning. I don't think it was as effective as the knocking in the original Haunting, but it was pretty good stuff.
All in all, a fun time that left room to be desired. Most of my friends think this is one of the best horror films of the decade, so I guess I'll have to label this one under "overrated."
