Best Graphic Novels for Halloween

Thread Starter
I guess you could call this a companion to the thread in Books. Best/favorite graphic novels for this time of year?

Chicago Tribune did their own list. Decent.

I pulled out my copy of Giant Monster for the fun of it.

Anything by Richard Sala.

Loeb/Sale did a few (3?) Batman Halloween specials before the two yearlong series, actually, and they're collected into one TPB, if anyone's interested. The first one was a Scarecrow story that I remember as being fairly Halloween-worthy.

This seems as good a place as any to ask: why the hell aren't there black and white "Essential"-style collections of the old EC stuff?
There are countless volumes of EC reprints.
Start HERE.

After going back and reading 30 Days of Night, it became clear to me this book is shit.

I don't know why it was so acclaimed. Someone explain.

The Nail by Rob Zombie, Steve Niles, and I think the artist is Nat Jones. It was a great little series that reads like a horror movie. It wraps up a bit too quickly, but has some fantastic moments and very moody art. Excellent build-up of suspense.

Steve Niles is a shit writer. Take a look at his recent mini series Dead, She Said.
Somehow he managed to get Bernie Wrightson to illustrate it.
What a fucking waste.

If you didn't enjoy 30 Days of Night, spend 30 days... of pain reading the 12 sequels!

The Enigma of Amigara Fault

edit- it's manga so read from right to left

The Essential TOMB OF DRACULA is awesomely fun and a lot of bang for your buck. Gene Colan's work looks great in black and white.

$50 per six issue collection isn't exactly what I was talking about.

Getting that complete run of issues was my last splurge as a comics fan a few years ago.

What else I've read of Steve Niles' stuff is shit, but I have to stick to my guns about the Nail. I've heard from Niles himself that it was mostly Rob Zombie anyway, so if you don't like Niles, don't let his name deter you. Even if you don't like Rob Zombie, don't let that deter you.

I agree about The Nail being a good comic.
Rob Zombie/Steve Niles also did Bigfoot, illustrated by the legend Richard Corben.

About any volume of The Goon TPB.

I recommend this to anyone even vaguely into horror. Goddamn.

That's actually one of two short stories included in the second volume of a manga called Gyo by Junji Ito. I haven't read Gyo(stumbled upon that link to Amigara Fault last year) but the synopsis is so bizarre that I really feel the need to order both volumes.
Ito's stuff is kind of Lovecraftian in the sense that really, really bad stuff happens to people who don't really deserve it. I mean, the punishment is exponentially worse than the transgression.

There's a movie based on Uzumaki with the same title, but I haven't seen it.
Uzumaki's a fantastic film. Really twisted and just as weird as the book. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd8a6BJT2cc

There's a series of books called Graphic Classics that are adaptations of various famous authors- the Lovecraft one is pretty damn good.

Hack/Slash is a must for any slasher fans. Pretty smartly written, fun book with tons of movie references.

And of course,

Uzumaki's great, and is almost as funny as it is disturbing. There's a scene involving a washing machine that's both hilarious and terrifying. It's thematically similar to Enigma in its portrayal of dark, surreal obsession, as well as featuring characters who are inexplicably drawn toward death.

Fall of Cthulhu and Cthulhu Tales are good, too.
