The New Prince of Persia

Thread Starter
I'm sure there is a thread for this, but I can't be bothered to gallivant through month old thread titles looking for it.

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41112.html

How it plays, God only knows. But it's fucking gorgeous, whatever else happens. That's a good looking game right there. I'm liking the return to colorful, vibrant graphics, what with Mirror's Edge, Littlebigplanet, Fable 2 and this. Let us stamp out brown! And generic space marines!
It's supposed to have the world's first non-shitty NPC sidekick.

The sidekick, along with the cel-shaded graphics make this game seem like a heaping pile of shit, but everyone has been saying the very exact opposite. Can't wait try try it.
I enjoyed the last three way too much.

AMEN.

The art direction in this is sublime. I dunno if the game is worth a crap, but Christ Almighty is it pretty.
The last three were stellar, even despite some truly reprehensible characterization choices in the last two. This trailer pretty much jumped this closer to the top of my Holiday Want list.
I am absolutely dying to play this, but I have no doubt it will be a game I miss until sometime into the spring when I get it on the cheap. Just way too many games out, and I can't shell out $60 for an 8-10 hour adventure.

Actually, that was Resident Evil 4.

Too many good games this year. Too many unknown quantities about Prince of Persia: Jet Grind Radio for me to get overly excited.

Actually actually, that was Half-Life 2.

The right answer.

In the original Half Life 2, isn't the delectable Alyx Vance constantly running off screen to do other stuff? I suppose she qualifies, but in terms of persistent, on-screen side-kickery, I'd say that the girl in RE4 was the first decent one.

By the time the retardedly numbered episodes came out, she was definitely a true "sidekick."

Yorda in Ico had RE4 beat by 4 years in that department.

Never played Ico, but the videos do seem to bear out your claim.

As a character motivation? She's great. As a gameplay aid mechanic? Useless as an anchovy's cunt.
Wow. I completely forgot this was coming out and seeing as PoP has been my favorite franchise of the last 8 years, I cannot freaking wait. That looks supremely gorgeous, digging the cel shaded, though I am dying to know how exactly it plays with the other character (will she be activated via buttons like PoP III and can someone else jump in and play her?).

Anyone know what song that was? That was beautiful.

Well yeah, of course she's not helpful, that would be completely besides the point. But I don't remember Ashley in RE4 being much of an help either, outside of the specific section where you control her.

Doc, the song is "Breathe Me" by Sia (most famous for its use in the final scene of Six Feet Under)

From what I read the other day(on ign I think) she is controlled by one of the buttons. The way its described it seems to me like she is more an extension of the Prince than an individual character when it comes to gameplay. Im not a huge fan of the new cel shaded approach but it still looks like a fun game. I was dirt poor in the time that PoP II and III came out so my only experience with it was Sands of Time which I liked alot.
I'm confused, what did Ashley in RE4 do outside of running behind Leon, or you telling her to "Stop" or "Follow Me"? When dealing with enemies, she'd do nothing but cower in fear if the zombies started to get close to her, instead of running away. And I don't know how many times I accidentally shot that bitch for stepping in the way, even though most of the time she would duck.

At least Alyx in Half Life 2 shot stuff.

Oh, and I'll play Prince of Persia because my roommate is a big fan of the series. It looks pretty cool though.
More than ever, I wish the last two PoP games were backward compatible.

It annoyed me, too. I was pretty engaged in the characters. Unfortunately, I read very detailed synopses before I purchased a Gamecube, thereby doubly ensuring my unhappiness over the entire affair.

Howso? I bought all three, and with the exception of the rushed-ness experienced in Warrior Within (still a great game), there didn't seem to be any big difference.
This game is pretty much dropping with a colossal whimper. Theories:

1.)Overly bright/cheery and somewhat funky looking color/graphics scheme.
2.)Coming at the tail end of a ridiculous game release maelstrom.
3.)There are apparently four enemies, who repeat over and over again, in the entire game. Umm...repetitive, much?
4.)Prince of Persia in general seems a bit tired and stale.
Geez man, it didn't even come out yet!

If you disagree with me, then tell me why. Let's look at the fairly fervent CHUD video-gaming populace: how many posts does this thread have, versus just about any other holiday game related thread?
IGN's (cue snarky "7-10 rating system" remark) given it a 9.3, saying it's lush, beautiful, in the vein of Shadow of the Colossus but a bit too easy at times and yeah, the combat is repetitive because you fight the same guys over and over again.

IGN

Still, sign me the fuck up.

I saw that. And yes, for a game to score that highly, yet, to my intertron-attuned mind, be off the radar, seemed a subject ripe for conversation.
I'll take door #2 in that conversation then, Overlord. Holy hell, there have been some mind bogglingly awesome games in the last, what, four weeks? I look forward to nothing coming out until this time next year so I can catch up with them all.
I love it when there's absolutely no buzz surrounding a game that I want to play because that means I can score it for 20 bucks in two months.
The Sands of Time was pretty low key itself wasn't it?
In fairness i've only ever played... er... the first one and even then it was years after its release.

I might put this on the rental queue just because i'm not too overexposed to the franchise and it might be surprising.

I don't think it was. The critical verdict is still out for the most part on this one, but I recall Sands of Time making a few GOTY lists. I also remember a lot of my friends that were casual gamers owning the game.

As for the new game, I haven't seen any ads for it, and this is coming from the same publisher that released Assassin's Creed. Maybe they just don't know how to market a cel-shaded Prince of Persia.

Well, "it's not Assassin's Creed" couldn't hurt things at all!
I ended up buying Sands of Time for about $20 a few months after its release because the thing just didn't seem to sell at all.

It fared well with the reviewers but in my experience didn't seem to impact with the general public at all.

Cel-shading, IMHO, looks like oversaturated cutesy-ness most of the time. Which would be appropriate for some games, but a prince of persia title? I loved the Sands of Time and am not enthused by this new direction, but maybe I'll change my mind when I snag it off in the bargain bin in June.

The fact that the IGN Reviewer expressed his undying love for Jet Set Radio Future told me all I need to know about his graphic predilections.
Heh this reminds me of XIII. That was an odd game. I kinda liked it, but kinda didn't. That one must have struggled to sell too.
I support this game solely for the fact that its teaser trailer means I get to hear Sigur Ros every time I walk into a Target electronics department.

Man XIII was such a truly, truly, bizarre game. Didn't it end with you trying to assassinate the vice president on a submarine?

You're everything that is wrong with videogame fans.

1) The idea that Cel-Shading = FOR TEH KIDS is utterly fucking retarded and is literally at neogaf levels of discourse

2) This iteration of the Prince of Perisa games started out in a distinctly fairy tale (albeit Arabian Nights influenced) style.
All three prior PoP game got rave reviews, but a nonexistent PR push. Assassin's Creed was dangerously close to being lumped into that same category till Jade Raymond took center stage.

Thing is, all three PoP games still leisurely strolled to selling a million copies, which is how they still all got made.

The general gaming public's treatment of this game is nothing new for this series. Let the dumb fucks eat cake.

I'm still psyched to give this a go.

I think it was on a boat. I remember being in a missile silo too. There were moments of greatness, hindered by the fact you felt like you were playing one of the first "episodic" games - weapons that looked like they'd be unlocked were never to be so.

Some funky gadgets and it actually looked quite nice for cel-shaded too.

I think the combat was just a bit wonky. Could have done with being more like NOLF or Deux Ex instead of just a shooter with moments of storybuilding.
I just remember the little in screen frames you'd get with successful headshots and how ridiculously long the game was for a FPS.
Yeah, they were using the cel-shading PIP to give it a Hulk-esque real-time comic-book style.

It kinda worked for me, there was just something lacking from the engine that meant I finished it - but didn't engage particularly.

Funny thing is you can unlock a skin of the character from Assassin's Creed, can't remember his name, in this PoP game.
I never seemed to have a problem with cel-shading, though gamers' reactions didn't surprise me (Zelda went cel-shaded right after GTA 3). However I think a lot of people are going to look back and agree that that style has more to do with the spirit of Zelda than the bordering-on-DBZ design look of games like Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess.

Cel-shading was fine for Wind Waker. Prince of Persia I'm not so sure about. Seems like weird brand-handling with the movie coming out.

You, sir, have made my day. I haven't laughed this loudly in weeks. I'll have you know I don't pirate games. Isn't that at least a minor plus in my favor?

Just to further confirm that it was "my opinion," I included the somewhat unecessary phrase "in my opinion" in the original post. For games with serious/adult subject matter, there's something incongruous about cel shading.

I thought Sands of Time offered a much more compelling visual style, even within the limits of the Xbox architecture.
Jeez, I don't get most gamers because I think this looks fantastic. Very much inspired by Zelda, I think.

Get this man a copy of Killer 7, stat.

I'm sure there's an exception out there. Maybe that new black and white and red Wii game will do it.

**Looked up Killer 7 in wikipedia. That is one strange sounding game.
Cel-shading on the most part is divisive because it's usually the predominant "gimmick" in a game. And that it's usually implimented badly.

When it's not implimented well, the majority of the time the game itself turns out to be uninspiring. I'm not even sure I find the artistic style worthwhile myself - whilst XIII was entertaining, it was entertaining on merits that would have worked within the Havok engine sans-cell shading.

Then again, I won't begrudge them their stylistic choices - especially since in this case it does look quite pretty.

Oh, and fuck you again. Jet Set Radio is fucking awesome.

Douchebag.

The graphics in this game work with the style, not against it. Which is the best thing you can say about game graphics, in my opinion. Saint's Row 2 would've been worse off with super serious real graphics. Fable 2 would not have felt fairy tale by stealing Gears's graphics style. PoP takes place in a fantasy Arabian Nights setting...and a colorful, painted art style is exactly what it needs. "MOAR LIEK CELDA!" is the dull, testosterone filled blanket statement against cel-shaded graphics that can fuck right off, and so can you, sir, if you persist in this back-water'd, mouth-breather fuck-headed way of thinking.
Cel shading is barely for kids these days...
