Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

Really, really cheezy name, but the concept for this game looks like great fun: every hero and villain has been taken over by a symbiote, and you have to fight them all. Take a look:

Also, I've heard that it has multiple endings, which I always like, for it gives games an extra added amount of pressure.

I've been keeping an eye on this game. There has yet to be the definitive Spider-Man game, and this doesn't look to be it either, but it looks way better than the Spider-Man 3 game. Too bad it's coming out so close to such bigger titles this month.

I just really dig the concept. I don't know if it's been done before in the comics (and I seem to remember it being Doc Ock's plan in the original playstation one Spider-Man game), but just the idea of every hero and villain (including Nightcrawler and Kingpin and Green Goblin) becoming Venomized just makes my geek sense tingle

You know, as long as I've been watching this game, I never knew what the story was for this. I knew you could change suits on the fly and your actions in the suits would affect the story but I was more interested in Spidey's animation and especially the combat since I've felt it's the weakest part of all Spider-Man games I've played. It does sound interesting.

That was a pretty rad trailer.

Moonlight Sonata for a superhero game trailer. That's nutty.

Ill give this one a go. Oddly, i find web-slinging through the city very soothing.

It's nice to have a non-movie spidey game. I'd be a lot better if it didn't have the symbiotes in it.

wait, its out already?

Comes out Oct. 21.

Could be the Youtube compression scheme, but thought it looked like "last gen" visuals (except for the size of some of the beasties ... but who knows what was a cut scene).

I will, however, reiterate what I've said in many threads over the years: if you get excited over a tie-in video game, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. What's the hit or miss ratio? 1:190320889?

Just picked this up and I'm loving it. I'm a long time superhero fan, and I loved the great Spider-Man games of the past (i.e. S-M2) and playing this had me grinning. The controls and combat are a blast. I'm still very early, but so far so good.

With so many A-list titles coming out these next few months, this may slip under the radar, but it's worth your time if you were ever into the Spider-Man games of the past.

David L.C., There already was a definitive Spider-Man game...Spider-Man Maximum Carnage for the SEGA Genesis.

That was a fun beat-em up game, but that's all that it was. It did come in that cool red cartridge though.

IGN: 5.5, and the tone of the review makes it sound like it should be lower.

Now, I haven't played the game, nor do I really plan to. But based on this one review I am fully confident that, looked at objectively, Web o' Shadows sucks. I feel no need to do any further research about the game. Flawed though my methodology may be, I am confident in my conclusion.

Which should further confirm what all of us really, really need to accept: no matter how dear an existing, non-videogame intellectual property may be to our hearts, the video game version is overwhelmingly likely to suck. No matter what the screenshots or trailers look like. No matter what the developers say. No matter what the kernel of hope buried inside our cynical souls is telling us. The suck. That's what coming.

And yes, I'm looking at even those supposed games that are going to "prove this trend wrong": Arkham Asylum and The Chronicles of Riddick remake (yes, even though it's a remake, I expect them to fuck it all up).

I beg you all: stop getting your hopes up.

I thought the review was a bit too harsh. I'm liking it - but that's coming from a long time Spider-Man fan who was really let down by S-M3 (movie and game)

I see your point Overlord - but I thought of an exception. Ever play Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction? A pretty sweet game; one of the best action titles of the last generation.

You're right. The few gems definitely cancel out the corresponding one-hundred (100) titles (... and I don't think I'm actually exaggerating too much) that are more retarded than Peter Petrelli.

I didn't say they cancel them out. Trying to agree with you here.

I demand you agree with me harder!

You know what would be even better? A Marvel Zombies game. That would be the greatest game ever.
That would be sweet. But who would the player be? Maybe Ash, like in the recent comics.

Game's not that good, but it's Spider-man so I'll finish it. Swinging around is fun, but that's pretty much it. The camera is really bad and it's repetitive.

It would be like ULTIMATE ALLIANCE. Except you'd be fighting off other infected superhumans in battles over who gets to eat the pocket of human/uninfected superhuman survivors first. You can choose to infect them OR eat them.

The battles themselves would be pretty horrific...in a good way.

I think one reason movie tie-in games in particular have such a horrific track record is that they're rushed to meet the film's release date. This past summer I rented both the Iron Man and Hulk tie-in games. Each time I got the feeling that they could have been good games if only the developers were given more time to polish.
