Trolls - A suggestion

Trolls. Love ‘em or hate ‘em they are here to stay. Whether they invade actual movie discussion , post in Post Whoring Threads or patrol local bridges attempting to extort chickens they seem to be everywhere.

While we do have a means for reporting these vile creatures to the Powers that be, there is no outlet for discussion. Discussions about how to define a Troll, what constitutes trolling behavior and how to handle said Trolls, aside from burning them after they reach zero hit points.

Message Board Trolls generally arrive at a message board and post comments meant to derail threads by offering posts that bare little or no relevance to the topic being discussed, post offensive material or comments or simply to shill a product of some sort.

But the problem that continues to arise is the Rush To Judgment in the labeling of a Troll. A Troll is not necessarily someone who disagrees with commonly held beliefs, but rather someone expresses those conflicting beliefs with little or no explanation or common courtesy. i.e. – “Your (sic) wrong, fuck you!” Or they may be someone you has failed to grasp the etiquette of message board posting.

Often the latter type of poster can be steered in the correct direction with some helpful suggestions and support, and usually you can tell if they are going to accept the help or continue to be a distraction almost immediately. But one of the problems is in the method that established post try to ‘Help’. Accusing a new poster of being an old Troll under a new name is not usually helpful unless there is enough evidence to back it up. There are methods at the board moderators disposal for detecting such activity and they normally handle the situation promptly.

Piling on a new poster will almost never help turn that poster around, they will simply become defensive and lash out resulting in the Troll label being applied and pitch forks being drawn.

All I’m saying here is a little bit of patience goes along way.

If this post is frowned upon and against the No Discussion Rules I apologize.

I assume you just tried to read through the new saving private ryan discussion? Poster Wolfie posted a unique take on the film and everyone just piled on him without end. His initial post on the subject did not call anyone out or label everyone else's ideas as stupid. He just posted an out there take of the film, but because he has a low post count, he was immediately called an idiot and everyone else after that just followed that lead.

A really terrible display of derailment. Doesn't matter if he might've been some old troublemaker. In that thread, he didn't deserve the shit piled on him and what suffered was the discussion. There's plenty of people out there like me who don't post much, but we read through many discussions to try and absorb as many viewpoints as possible. It's what makes this place great. It's sad when someone is stomped on and the thread poisoned for such a little offense as posting a weird interpretation of things. Some would argue, that's why we're here.

To be fair, Wolfie is definitely NoDiggity, only now applying his devastating Eye of Eisegesis* to Spielberg instead of Harry Potter, and A&P should not be criticized for pointing it out.

On the flipside, flindip seems to be well meaning if clueless newbie, and has at least started cleaning up his posts grammar-wise.

*Hope you're happy, DaveB.

Ecstatic. That's the perfect word for his style of critical analysis, and it had been eluding me.

For those who don't like to look things up:

Flindip and Wolfie are both NoDiggity. Can'em.

Resorting to junior high attacks the second someone calls him on his stupidity isn't a sign of improvement, even if he figured out where to put a period.

Flindip is not Wolfie or NoDiggity.

See, they have technology on their side.

I don't think Wolfie is all that bad, but just has different opinions than most people here. Then again, I haven't read ALL of his posts, so, who knows.

My suggestion re: trolls is to STOP TALKING TO THEM.

Someone somewhere took on Flindip and started a bitching match that derailed the whole thread for almost a whole page. It was stupid to read and I really can't understand why the need to talk to trolls when you know they're trolls.

Trolls and flindip are two separate topics.

I take "troll" to mean a poster who shows up solely to cause discord. He doesn't care about the discussion, and he espouses the opinion that will get the biggest reaction rather than one he actually believes.

Flindip is just a guy who doesn't think before posting and who doesn't react well when he is corrected. These two skills can be learned, usually from DaveB.

Trolls can't go from this to this, and flindip (or any of us) probably can't have that big of a success story either, but who knows.

I'm pretty sure DaveB is a Troll, a well educated Troll, but a Troll none the less.

Oh, absolutely. He showed up at my apartment six years ago and I haven't been able to get rid of him since. Eileen, could you please ban him? Kthnx.

He is also, apparently, Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS. Which is weird, because he's male, and, uh, a member of the tribe.

Maybe you two are the same person? The return of Kiteless?
Ban 'em both I say!

CHUD doesn't have a troll problem. Visit another movie site forum and you'll be instantly reminded that these boards are a veritable utopia in comparison.

All this focus on DaveB and Miss Zooey? To distract from the missing Gracie, I think (if she was ever real to begin with.......).

This may not be a popular suggestion, but here goes.

It's been made emphatically clear that the troll reporting thread is not a place for discussion. However, I think there needs to be an opportunity and a place for someone being accused of being a troll to defend themselves. 9 times out of 10 someone named in the troll thread is just shilling and won't bother, but you might get that 1 out of 10 who got off on the wrong foot or thought the best way to fit in was to come across as a jerk (a perception not hard to take away from here sometimes). And rather than have every thread they post in get cluttered with repeated accusations and denials, it seems like it'd be better to confine all that to one thread.
