They Didn't Make The Cut

Here's where we piss people off and talk about the horror flicks that we didn't pick for whatever reason.
Did Prince of Darkness make the cut?

Yes.

The Faculty

I had the idea of making a Altered Personalities or body swapping theme.

The Thing, Body Snatchers, The Faculty and Slither were the ones i had in mind. Couldn't come close to it.

TALES FROM THE CRYPT PRESENTS: DEMON KNIGHT.

Oh well, I liked it.

I still like Demon Knight. Maybe not as much as when I was nineteen, but it's alright.

Love Cooch Pounder's gigantic ass in that movie.
I contemplated both The Orphanage and Bug.

I think it's more the cast that I like than the movie, though the movie has its moments. But it's hard for me to dismiss a flick with Sadler in the lead backed up by Zane, CCH, Thomas Haden Church, Dick Miller, Hot-ass Brenda Bakke, guy who voiced Roger Rabbit, and a John Larroquette cameo!
The Frighteners crossed my mind.
Some of my considerations:

HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY (Kills me to leave this one off-regret not pulling the trigger)
THE TENANT (Creepy, paranoia driven Polanski; a real freak out second half)
JUST BEFORE DAWN (My favorite slasher)
INFERNO (Some days my preferred Argento)
SISTERS
DRESSED TO KILL
TENEBRAE
THE CANDY SNATCHERS
THE NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS
OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN (Such a cool movie)
FIGHT CLUB
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE
HILLS HAVE EYES ('04)
WILLARD
THE HOST
MEMORIES OF MURDER (Not Horror enough to pull trigg)
Pieces
Wrong Turn 2
Who Can Kill A Child?
Final Destination 2
Humanoids From The Deep

Fight Club?

Street Trash

Fight Club isn't a horror film.

Nobobdy went with Ghostbusters, did they? I'm happy about that.

Thought somebody might pick Leviathan. Not the best movie in the world, and that finale is absolute shit, but I know it has its fans.
Like Fat Elvis, I was this close to picking The Tenant.

My backup double feature for today might have been The Host and The Relic.
Willard and Final Destination 2 were in my mind as well.

Devin, would have loved to have you participate in this one. It seems like your genre.

I'm not a draft guy.

I considered Lord of Illusions. I like the thing, multiple warts and all.

I can't believe no one picked Slither.

Tati did, bonus round.

I went with Tremors round five instead of Slither.
I came really close to going with THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT and QUATERMASS 2 in the bonus round.

I would have backed someone on THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT even if it only worked once.
Some of the more notorious exploitation films didn't get picked:

I Spit on your Grave
Bloodsucking Freaks
Cannibal Ferox
Nekromantik

etc.

Yeah, it was a fleeting flirtation. I thought of maybe trying to connect it to DR. JECKYLL & MR. HYDE (or even PSYCHO). Stir up some debate. But the similarities are only surface deep. The genre credentials thin to the point of nonexistance. Same thing with ONE FLEW OVER THE CUKOO'S NEST.

The Crazies
As long as someone was picking "Night of the Scarecrow" in the Bonus Round, I'm surprised someone didn't opt for "The Night Stalker".

Other surprises:

No one went for BUBBA HO TEP?

Nobody went for a Corman/Price Poe movie?

Graveyard Shift- not the King, but the vampire flick from the 80's- used to watch it a lot back then, anybody seen it, how does it hold up?
I'm kicking myself for not taking part in this draft.

A list I made with picks that hadn't been taken:

The Changeling
Kwaidan
The Company of Wolves
Altered States
Psycho II

Bonus round picks:

Spider Baby: Grab some booze, throw this on Halloween night and sing along with Lon Chaney, Jr. during that opening song. Did I mention you'll need booze for this one?

Mr. Frost: Not the greatest flick, but Goldblum as Satan. I repeat, Goldblum as Satan.
I've heard really good things about The Changeling. That's one I'll have to get around to watching.

The Changeling used to creep me out when I would watch it at my sister's house, she had it taped to VHS. In fact, I don't know if I ever finished it.

Most of you guys stayed classy, but I thought about doing a truly tasteless bonus round, and I know it had to include Amityville II: The Possession.

Yes, I know that's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to tasteless horror movies, but just for the scene alone where he fucks his sister. Ewww.

RE; THE CRAZIES

Shit. Great one Keith!

When you picked MARTIN, I mentally made a not on that one, then totally forgot. A true cult classic.

As far as scares and suspense, it works for me-while of course not on the same intellectual level- almost as much as NOTLD. A raw, smaller scale version of THE STAND. I'm sure King would probably admit to borrowing from it.

I also forgot to mention the spooky George C. Scott ghost story THE CHANGELING. EDIT-right on, Abbott!)

The ending of The Crazies tears me up. Fuck, that's some dark shit, George.
Literally every single film I had on my list of possible picks (had to be around 50) got picked at some point throughout the draft. I'm still kicking myself about Pumpkinhead, as any of those possible picks would have been better. Hindsight and all that.
In the 70's his low budget, by the seat of your pants style was really effective. THE CRAZIES should have a better reputation. For some reason, I guess it frustrates a lot of people.

A very Scream-ish, ahead of its time flick that deserved some love is FADE TO BLACK. I love it.

Student Bodies is my go to for slasher jokes.

I didn't see The Crazies until about five years ago. I think it's one of those that was kind of hard to find on video, at least in my neck of the woods it was.
I'm curious, to any of you old school horror guys-do you consider giallos Horror? Would something like BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE count? Or is it just a more violent Hitchcockian thriller?

DePalma's red period straddles the line too.
Until I decided to go foreign, my bonus round was going to be:

Blair Witch Project. Fuck all the haters. I lived deep in the woods when I watched this and the drive home scared the piss out of me.

Feast. I really wanted to pick this, but I decided it's really just a comedy that happens to have skull-fucking monsters as the co-leads.

Glad to see The Innocents on that list, though.

I'm a Blair Witch guy, too.

I was so happy because that movie let me scare the shit out of myself. I appreciated it.

I'm not happy with the still going found footage subgenre, but whatever.
BLAIR WITCH was legitimately scaring the shit out of people that summer. Sounds dumb now, but some actually thought it was real. It feels wrong that LAST BROADCAST is represented instead.

I'd argue that you could add THE SIXTH SENSE to the list of horror movies that transcended genre, becoming cultural phenomenons. Thought Erix would snag it--M. Night being his boy and all. As much as he's crashed and burned to the point of career suicide today, can't take this one away. Experiencing the collective gasp of a packed audience at the near legendary twist is still a cool film going memory.

With all the newer horror that went, baffled no one took HIGH TENSION.
It's been a long time since I've seen The Crazies, I'd kind of forgotten about it.

Bubba Ho-Tep too. Both are great choices and either should've been my round five.

This is going to catch me all kinds of shit but I did ponder Hannibal.

EDIT: High Tension too. Goddamn it I should've put more thought into Round Five. That's what I get for drafting about two minutes after waking up. My brain's not in the game yet.
Just about everything on my list got picked. These were what was left over -
The Legend of Hell House
Pieces
Final Destination 2
The Keep
The Frighteners
Spider Baby
Tetsuo The Ironman
Street Trash
Humanoid from the Deep
Bird with the Crystal Plumage
The Hills Have Eyes (remake)
I forgot about High Tension too, which is surprising since I always defend it.

Yeah, The Changeling was one I was really surprised to see not picked. It would have definitely found its way into my top 5 if I had been participating.

Here's the Masters of Cinema Series trailer for Kwaidan Definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Mister Frost is a hard one to track down. It's mostly remembered for Goldblum's performance. Still waiting for it to show up on DVD. But you can find it on Google video if anyone is interested in checking it out.

I'm glad you did forget it, because your list is currently my favorite, and High Tension would have killed it.

I'm gonna have to give HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP a whirl.

Good call on LEGEND of HELL HOUSE. Maybe the second best haunted house movie, after the original THE HAUNTING. Also James Whales's THE OLD DARK HOUSE.

Along the schlock variety: Alligator & Piranha EDIT-forgot about RACE WITH THE DEVIL-You guys gotta check that one out! Quint over at AICN just did a write up too

THE LAST WAVE - don't tell me that shit's not horror. I watched it last night and it gave me the fuckin' whim-whams.

Hated Haute Tension. With a passion.

Loved the 06 Hills Have Eyes, though, and almost bonus rounded it. Whenever an original or sequel gets picked, I have a hard time pulling the trigger on the remake or what have you. Reason I stayed away from Body Snatchers '78, even though it would have fit my list and I love it to death.

I know James May thought it sacriledge, but I do like 78 Body Snatchers more than I like the fifties version, although it I'm not disparaging the Siegel version at all. Prefer the anti consumerism stuff going on in the 78, I think it's even more relevant today.

By the way, Comcast pimpin' Invasion '78 is on the free movies.

EDIT: Ooh, The Devil Rides Out, good one.

Surprised Bob Clark didn't get Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things on here.

Race with the Devil? Is that what it's called, with Warren Oates and Peter Fonda? Could have been picked. EDIT: What Elvis said.
I was about to say that Invasion '78 is on Netflix Instant View and also Dead Ringers which I will be watching hopefully very soon.
REC was my backup for Dawn of the Dead. Great little movie.

If it wasn't for my theme, which went overboard in the Bonus round, I would have went with The Hidden in a second.

Backup for Devil's Backbone was The Frighteners.
