They Didn't Make The Cut - Page 2

Films I had as backups:

70s: The Beguiled, Deranged, Deathdream
60s: The Last Man On Earth, Mr. Sardonicus, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
50s: I Bury The Living, I Was A Teenage Werewolf
40s: The Leopard Man
30s: The Raven
And had Repo: The Genetic Opera being out yet I would have drafted it easily. Loved it.
THE BEGUILED would've been clever. and cool to see Clint go in a Horror Draft. Didn't even cross my mind.

Along those line, i suppose PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK could be considered Horror.

Just remembered I meant to pick the Herzog NOSFERATU remake. Fuck!
THE BEGUILED - that's nice, Phil. Haven't seen it in years but it did make a young lad feel kinda uneasy. And it was great seeing Clint play that kind of sleazy bastard.
Maybe more arguments than Incredible Shrinking Man on the "horror or not" front. I think it's a good pick. But my theme being what it was, it had to compete against other films from its decade, and as I was able to pick my first choices nearly every time (got beat on Cat People for 40s), it was out of the running on day one.

The Last Man on Earth is something that I considered early on, but I like the fact that it stays close to the source more than I like the actual movie itself, so I didn't think of it further. Price was really good in that though. Except when he had to do something taking any small amount of physicality, since his femininity shined brighter than the sun.

If we were really pushing it, HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER could have made the cut.

That's a seminal one for me, mostly because it's one of the first movies I recall seeing, sick with a fever at my grandmother's house. The weird dubbed over voice of the blind little daughter under the mosquito net still freaks me out.

That'd be a ballsier pick, for sure.
Speaking of CAT PEOPLE, I even like Paul Schrader's remake. Anyone else?

Thought briefly about WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE, HUSH, HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE, and BURNT OFFERINGS. (Okay, admitedly even WATCHER IN THE WOODS-I stand behind that one, Arjen)

THE CAR would've been cool.

Looks like The Amityville Horror has fallen out of favor. Poor Rod Steiger

I'm with ya. Nice mix of the kinky and the Kinski.

Hey, does BLADE or BLADE II count as horror? Not BLADE TRINITY, though - fuck that.
If somebody had drafted High Plains Drifter they would've been my draft winner even if they'd drafted nothing but slasher sequels to fill out the list.

Thank God nobody drafted The Amityville Horror. How that film got to have any kind of positive reputation is beyond me.

I kind of wanted to draft Hellboy II: The Golden Army, but I didn't feel like making the argument about horror vs. adventure/fantasy. Mainly, I wanted it because it's fucking awesome.

Friday the 13th, IV and VI are shining examples, but would have liked to see part II go.
I thought about drafting High Plains Drifter, but decided against it. Dammit!

I also thought about drafting John Carpenter's Cigarette Burns, but I didn't know if MOH episodes would be draftable.
I had left:

Tetsuo: The Iron Man
The Frighteners
Hannibal
Demon Knight
Gremlins 2
Alien 3
Blade II
Pitch Black
A Clockwork Orange
Interview With The Vampire

Also, if I hadn't already taken it in the Fail Draft Bonus Round, I'd have snatched up Silent Hill post-haste.
I also had Alien III pegged if Nightmare III would have been taken.
I thought about High Plains Drifter as well. I thought it would be a bitch of an argument to make, but I guess it wouldn't have been that bad after all.

My wife wanted me to draft Club Dread for her. I told her that I did. I never would have.

My guilty pleasure would have been the Waxwork movies and Jason X. Jason is space just never fails to crack me up. I need to buy that one day. I'm sure it's in a two dollar bargain bin somewhere.

I don't accept "The Beguiled" as a horror film.
I think it's a good film to throw in there for a festival type atmosphere.

I'm with Anderson. Although I would have loved the discussion that it engendered.

I toyed with HARDWARE, cyberpunk as it is, it's also very splatterpunk.

Thought somebody might take POPCORN.

Nabors, I'm surprised that WAXWORK didn't go. I loved that movie, but you know, I've never seen the uncut version, just the butchered Vestron Video version.
Someone could've done a "Many Flavors of Southern Gothic" theme that spanned 2000 Maniacs to The Beguiled to Texas Chain Saw Massacre to Motel Hell to Frailty. With plenty of backups.

Kind of surprised that NIGHT OF THE DEMONS didn't go.

Haven't seen it in at least fifteen years, I don't remember it being all that great, but is seems like it has a cult to it. Probably for the lipstick in the titty scene alone.

I was thinking about a Richard Stanley double feature for the Bonus Round but I figured that everyone would peg HARDWARE as sci-fi, despite the fact that it's bloody as hell. Plus I was mad keen to have a GINGER SNAPS in there - I love that series.
I toyed with doing a "Bad Apartment Living" theme, but it was contingent on getting Rosemary's Baby in the first round which I didn't think possible. The other picks would have been The Sentinel, Shivers, The Tenant and Demons 2.
Blood For Dracula (on FLIX now) and Flesh For Frankenstein would have been good bonus rounders. Udo Kier is a fucking scream in Dracula.
I lingered long on Requiem For A Dream, but didn't have the love for it that I have for Blacula. Oh, Blacula, scream, won't you? Scream.
Didn't make the cut

Silent Hill - I liked it. The Pyramid Head kill was spectacular enough to get it on my list. The ending was bad enough to keep it from making the top five.

Final Destination 2 - One of the great setpieces in horror history. But still a Final Destination movie.

Ghost Town (1988) - A Charles Band joint. Something about this movie stuck with me. It was originally ( I think...that movie had a convoluted production history) a Full Moon production, but it really wanted and tried to be more. DTV, so I didn't accept it. Plus, I had Curse of the Undead as a superior horror/western.

Puppetmaster III - Fuck you. I love this movie. Unlike the first two in the series, this one has the feel of an actual movie. And a story. Not a great one, but they were actually making an effort on it. I appreciated that. Again, DTV, so I didn't seriously consider it.

I would have gone for The Leopard Man, but it's been long enough that when I tried to look it up I was looking for the wrong title. I was thinking along the lines of "Black Panther" or something. Totally atmospheric flick that would have been snagged if I could have gotten the dust out of my attic.

Legend of Hell House was *strongly* considered. I love me some Roddy. Wasn't willing to give up any of my top five, though. This one I pull out and watch on an annual basis.

War of the Worlds (1953) - Considered it briefly, but I couldn't do the leap from sci-fi to horror.

I thought about this one earlier, meant to bring it up. Ol' Frank Luz, and a pretty cool gimmick, in that the way to take down the 'ghosts' is to use artifacts from the ghost town, i.e. I remember taking out one of them with an old pick axe.

It was pretty good stuff, especially coming from the Charles Band camp.

Does anybody remember a flick called The Kindred?

http://www.imdb.com/title
/tt0091343/

Used to be a cable favorite. Another one I'd like to see again, to find out what kind of taste I had at fourteen.
Peeping Tom was another back pocket in case Psycho got picked on day 1.
Looking at the list I made, another one I considered but just couldn't make the leap in genres was Colossus: The Forbin Project

I've seen The Kindred. Been a while, though, so I don't remember much of it (dust in the attic again...I *am* as old as Jacob Singer, after all). May have to revisit that one, too.

My netflix queue is ballooning big time after this thing.

Shit, that one totally slipped my mind. Would have been an awesome pick. I finally saw it, oh I think it was in March, and I've been pimping it ever since. Turned a buddy onto it and he hasn't stopped thanking me.

Pretty sure that The Kindred is not on DVD, but please, somebody tell me I'm wrong.

If Nick was in this draft, I bet The Boogens would have been picked.
PEEPING TOM may be the best film not picked.

I've always liked the dreamy paranoia of the original INVADERS FROM MARS. And for cheesy fun, I still love THE GATE.
I would have considered Equus if I had actually seen it by now. I need to pick up that fucking dvd stat.
Hey guys... Interesting that Elvis speculated about me drafting Sixth Sense. I think it's definitely a valid choice. It's pretty scary the first time you watch it. But when I think Horror, Shyamalan is not something that pops into my head. That's why I went in a different direction altogether.

A movie I considered drafting in the bonus (and I would have had someone beaten me to Halloween III) was Eyes of a Stranger. I don't know if you've seen this movie but it is a very lurid thriller about a mentally retarded man who pursues and repeatedly tries to rape a blind (and teen-aged) Jennifer Jason Leigh. It has some great gore effects by Tom Savini (a head shot to rival his work on Dawn of the Dead) and was written by the Ron Kurz and Martin Kittrosser.... Look them up and you'll see their "importance" to the horror genre.

It's a suspense thriller that plays like a slasher film due to the level of violence and the musical score is very Manfredini-ish... Even though he didn't do it.

Shit.

I should have drafted this instead of Toolbox. Oh well.

Warning Sign, I thought about working that one in there. I'm pretty sure the consensus is that it's no good, but I saw it again about a year and a half ago, and I still enjoyed the hell out of it.

A flick I just remembered, and really, I wished I'd have picked it, Society.
SOCIETY! How the hell did we overlook the Shunt? For shame!

You really need to watch more horror movies, man. Requiem for a Dream is a tough movie, but it's not remotely horror by a long long stretch.
More I think about it, yeah, I am kinda pissed Jurassic Park went, while Spielberg's War of the Worlds didn't see the light of day.
The Living and the Dead. Does that count as a horror?

I too am kicking myself for not taking part in this one.
I didn't see anyone else say it so I'll say it. Saw....there said it.
Ghostbusters is the one I talked about at one point last week for probably my biggest scare as a kid. First time I watched that movie I was alone while my parents were down stairs in the garage. The Ghost in the library came out. I screamed shut off the VCR and ran down stairs to the garage. I think it was not till the next day and under parental supervision that I finished the movie.

One of these films was picked in the bonus rounds but I had thought of doing a sabotage draft theme by going will all remakes.
1. Rob Zombie Halloween
2. Gus's Psycho
3. Zeta Jones's The Haunting
4. (was going to go House on Huanted Hill but since it was taken) Paris Hilton's House of Wax
5. Ryan Reynolds' Amityville Horrors
At the risk of obliterating any good will I might have accumulated during this draft, I have to grudgingly admit that the recent HOUSE OF WAX didn't completely suck. Some of it worked pretty well, actually*.

* Not Paris.

Was the original House of Wax picked?
Did anyone pick The First Power with Lou Diamond Philips?
Original House of Wax was not picked.

The CHUD favorite TV movie I was thinking of is Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

They're horror, no question. Too much blood, trauma, and psychosexual nastiness going on for them not to count. Too many great set piece murder sequences!

To make a what-could-have-been draft out of the undrafted gialli:

1. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
2. The Cat o' Nine Tails
3. Tenebrae
4. What Have You Done to Solange?
5. All the Colors of the Dark
This is fun. Draft of undrafted spooky shit:

1. The Uninvited
2. The Legend of Hell House
3. The Woman in Black
4. The Changeling
5. Ghost Story
Creaky old shit draft:

1. Dreyer's Vampyr
2. Murnau's Faust
3. The Golem
4. The Man Who Laughs
5. The Cat and the Canary
