"Clancy's" Endwar

There's a demo up on Marketplace now (1.6 gig!). I'm not big into strategy games, but I do want to check out the voice command system. I have yet to see a game in which voice commands have been successfully or seamlessly integrated, and I have my doubts about this one too. But hey, the screenshots are pretty and the demo is free, so I'll check it out.

I'm curious to try this game out. I don't play RTS games much (I'm not much of a PC gamer) but I'd like to get into the genre. I think I'd like it. Any word on if this demo is coming to the PS3 soon?

No demo for the PS3, I'm afraid.

Tried the demo. Calibrating the voice commands was a breeze once I got the mic positioned properly (basically had to wear my headset around my neck to get the mic the proper distance from my mouth). And the voice commands are simple, yet deep. Color me intrigued.

But this is yet another demo that just drops you into the shit without any tutorial whatsoever, and for a strategy title, that's kind of a big mistake. They spend a good ten minutes or more calibrating the headset, then just dump you into a mission and you're on your own.

The game looks great, and I really wanted to play the mission, but I'm not ashamed to admit I had no idea what to do. Your mission is to protect a rocket launch at Kennedy Space Center, and as the mission begins it's already under attack. I had no idea how to target the enemy, move my tanks and helicopters, what things I should use the contrller for and which should be used with the headset, or basically even just how to begin.

I'll give it another shot later, but really, for something this new and unusual not having a tutorial in the demo is really frustrating.

Then again, I could just be an idiot, and you strategy hounds will have it down in no time. If that's the case, please be gentle with me.

SOCOM for the PS2 actually had some pretty good voice commands for the single player portion(oddly, it was more reliable than in the sequel).

Ive seen the videos for EndWar on the PSN and it doesnt look too bad though it Im not sure how easy it will be to keep track of unit numbers in order to call them out on a regular basis. I didnt see any tags on them to help out though Im sure they will be there somewhere. I do really like the idea they have for weapons of mass destruction though, in that they represent them as a true weapon of last resort that you can only use when your close to defeat or as the final nail in the coffin. If the enemy cant just tech up to nukes as fast as possible that could make for some more involving multiplayer.

Wow, I enjoyed this demo a lot. I didn't have to fiddle with the voice command calibration that much, and not once did it have trouble recognizing my commands.

I guess the real question will be how well this balances out as a decent RTT experience. I had no trouble taking care of the skirmish and campaign missions contained in the demo, so I hope the final product ends up posing more of a challenge.

Demo is 360 timed exclusive for some reason. PS3 will follow at a date TBA.

Played a few games with a friend last night and found the voice control system absolutely awesome. Once you get all the commands memorizied (not that difficult) you're spouting em out like the most hardcore armchair general and feel like you're actually commanding living beings. The whole battlefield is just so fluid and looks so gorgeous. There's alot going on at any one time, but you never getting overwhelmed. You really feel like your army will do exactly as you order them and 95% of the time, they do. The voice command system is a killer app here as far as I'm concerned. It's a revolutionary leap in terms of responsiveness and depth.

Can't wait for the full game.

When you give a voice command order do they respond in the headset or on the tv? I guess its not really important but it would be pretty cool if they talk on the headset.

Agreed. It's a woefully underused option in my opinion. How much cooler and more immersive would games like Dead Space be if the voice comms were over the headset?

They do respond in the headset.

Manhunt used the headset like that, though I don't know any people that ever tried it. Seems kind of cool to get Brian Cox's orders right to your ear. You could also talk into it to alert your enemies.

There was an option to enable it in MGS4 too.

If you give an intelligible order, an annoyingly high pitched voice screams in your ear that it CANNOT BE DONE COLONEL!!!

I loved that detail to Manhunt. Sure the game was uneven, but that was an amazing bit of detail.

That was the only way to play Manhunt. Brian Cox, whispering gently in your ear, getting off on the murderation, yelling at you if you fucked up...totally added to the experience. Also, whistling to lure unsuspecting perverts to their gruesome destruction was cool, too.

Voice control will make for very awesome situations with roommates or significant others. Nothing like frustrated yelling and cursing at 3 in the morning to spice up a relationship.

Anyone picking this up tomorrow?
