So is this the dedicated David Alan Grier showcase we've all yearned for, or is it actually as crap as the trailers suggest?

I always felt it was David Allen Grier's whiteness that made him so funny. He's like a Jewish man trapped in a black man's body, and the two are always at odds. He's a terrific character actor, and a great improviser (I still insist his best stuff has always been his Loveline appearances).

I set my DVR to record an episode just to check it out, but I'm not expecting much.

Not so hot. He really should just do an entire show, sitcom or variety, based around him as Maya Angelou. Could watch him do that endlessly.

His Maya Angelou poetic endorsements for Penzoil & such on SNL were magnificent.

The sketch he did on that same "SNL" as part of the morning show that can't function when the teleprompter breaks down was straight up boffo.

"OH, YOU LOOPS OF FROOT! THE KUMQUAT, THE KIWI, THE POMEGRANATE..."

The show's just okay. I enjoyed the character sketches, but the in-studio stuff left me cold.

EDIT: The Angelou segment on Chocolate News is online.

I think Grier's problem with the in-studio stuff is that he's bad at reacting to his own jokes. When he has to stay in character the whole time, he's very funny. But he's not half the stand-up that he is impressionist/actor.

True, his in-studio persona almost seems to be aping Colbert somewhat. I liked his "death of hip-hop" monologue at the start, though.

That "N-word' sketch at the end was awful.
