The Secret Life of Bees Post-Release discussion

Didn't know what to expect going in but I came out liking it. Though it was the characters that made it over the story which was only so-so. I was glad they didn't sell out to make everything perfect. Granted they were going off a book but they kept the pain in certain areas that could have been altered for a safer story for the Fanning character.

Top 2 stand outs are Sophie Okonedo(May) and Dakota Fanning(Lily). May could have been an annoying character with all the emotions that poured out but Sophie hit just the right tone.

And it's sick how good Dakota Fanning is. For some reason she isn't highly regarded on here by some. While looking up to see if there was a thread on this I saw a sad thread about her awkward teenage looks. If she was that she's moved on to the swan stage. very natural.

Jennifer Hudson surprised me. She showed me she could play someone other than a singer well. A muted performance but sold the character.

Didn't care for Alicia Keys. I don't think she's capable of smiling in a film. While watching I kept thinking this could be the girl from Smokin' Aces. All serious, all the time. I get that from her in interviews too. I just see a person struggling through.

Definatly worth a rental or if you are considering seeing Max Payne or some other shitty movie.

Didn't like it QUITE as much as you did, but I agree for the most part. I thought Hudson was done for after her awful, bland "Sex & the City" turn, but she's pretty good here.
