What's your favorite Board Game? - Page 4

Your first game will definitely be a practice one, though.
Okay, that's great to know. I'm the only one who was into the show so I'll most likely opt for something else entirely.

BSG will take you a helluva long time to figure out at first. Our first game took around 4-5 hours, constantly referencing the rules. I'd recommend getting very familiar with them yourself before starting it up- it'll help a lot.

That's a pretty great idea for starting any board game, really- a lot of the rules are completely obtuse and don't tell you what you need to know in a concise way. Pandemic, for example. It's simple as hell but the damn instructions take till the end to tell you what your objective is! (Try to cure all four diseases by collecting cards of the same color!)

Pandemic, however, is the only game my wife will tolerate. It's not hard to teach, games are fast and fun and it's a co-op versus competitive, a definite plus for the fairer sex.

Another fun and light game? The Back to the Future card game. Can be played in 15-30 minutes a game and is quite fun for fans of the films. A lot of clever references. The game itself is based on another (apparently more complex) one called Chrononauts, which I'm interested in checking out.

Chrononauts is a good time. A simplified BTTF version sounds more appealing to me than the original game, though.

Concerning the BSG board game, this is the only version I see right off the bat. Is this the original game, with the added storyline of Pegasus...or is it only an extension, as in the original board game is needed to provide the foundation?

Late reply, but that's the first expansion. This is the original- http://store.fantasyflightgames.com/productdetails.cfm?sku=BSG01

There's another expansion hitting soon called Exodus. Both come with extra board games, cards and rules, but honestly it'll take you a while to get many plays to get sick of the base game. It's a long sucker and you need at least 4-5 people to keep things interesting and keep you guessing on who the toasters are.

Count me in for the love of  TP (its called Trivium over hre). although no one likes to play it with me because my only weakness is pretty much the "Sports" category.

I think the best part of TP is when someone either is ignorant or gets a mental blank on a very obvious question, either by bad luck or alcohol...hell, here's a real example i onc witnessed (translated for you gringos):

"Okay, literature it is...what book begins with "In some village in La Mancha, whose name I do not care to recall, there dwelt not so long ago a gentleman of the type wont to keep an unused lance, an old shield, a skinny old horse, and a greyhound for racing.".

Ten minutes passed and the guy couldnt remember the title while we all looked in disbelief...not only the book is pretty much mandatory reading in both high school and college here, this guy owned it and had read it at least 4 times in his life. At one point the guy actually began to worry he had some brain problems.

On the other hand, that same guy always managed to beat my brother and I at Risk, even if he always used his "multi directional blitzkrieg from Ukraine" tactic.

I know it's a bit early, but any BSG players play the Exodus expansion yet? Looks pretty cool, though I'm disappointed for the lack of Cylon leader support.

I used to love playing Battle Masters when I was younger. It had a 4 1/2 foot by 5 foot board (mat).

Perigon looks like a really fun new game.

The Purple Pawn website describes it as "an abstract game of 90 degree movement. You flip your pieces in 90 degree arcs, trying to flip the flag onto your opponent’s goalpost."

Played the Game of Thrones board game for the first time yesterday and had a blast.  We drew for houses and I ended up with the Lannisters.  What was great was that, through no deliberate action on our part, the Greyjoy and Stark players started going at it while I commenced to beating on the Baratheons.  The way the players place their orders -- face down to be revealed all at once -- really adds a great element of uncertainty, and all the other mechanics like the favor tracks and the supply track add both flavor and nuance to the game.

I started off like gangbusters, only to get ganged up on when everyone suddenly realized that not only had I gained enough supplies to field the largest number of armies, but I was two strongholds away from victory.  I also heavily underestimated the value of sea power, as the Greyjoy player used his fleet to move pretty much at will around the map.  By the time we realized this, his fleet was to strong for us to combat, and he eventually won the game, although it did take until the final turn.  That's another great thing about this game; it's not one of those games where, if someone leaps out to a huge lead, it turns into a race for second.  There are so many variables (and I mean that in a fun, non-confusing way) that victory can turn to defeat and back again rather quickly.

How easy is that to pick up and play, and how long does it take to finish a session? I've been thinking about picking it up. I need to read Alex's review over on Digest.

We sat down at 1:00 and finished at 5:30, but that was with four people who had never played the game before, and with about 20 to 30 minutes of going over the basic rules.  The pace of play picked up considerably as time went on and we became more comfortable.

It's helpful too that everyone sort of goes at the same time.  You're not sitting waiting for someone to perform half a dozen phases before you get to go.  And you could be involved in a battle at any time -- Support orders allow you to affect the outcome of any neighboring battle, including one in which you have no troops directly involved.  So your attention is held pretty consistently.

Here's a link to the game rules.  You can take a look and see how you think you and your group would take to it.

Outstanding. Thanks!

Ugh... My friends and their stupid babies. I lost my game players to fatherhood and jobs that moved them, so I don't have a group anymore. I so wish I had some group to play with.

I feel your pain; the bulk of my gamer friends live about 30 minutes away from me, so any impromptu game nights that pop up I usually miss out on.

That's cause Moopes isn't a real word. I like Scrabble and Monopoly. My kids always cracked up at B.O. Railroad.

Oh and Stratego and Risk when my boys were older.
