World of Goo

Quit wasting your money on obnoxious fanwank like Mega Man 9 and buy this instead. It's genuinely brilliant.
Love it, love it, love it. So great. Made by two guys, and better than most of the games churned out by 150-person teams this year.

Yeah, I was shocked when I checked out the credits and saw two names. Unreal.

Also, people who bemoan the lack of creativity in gaming but don't buy this are all giant droopy assholes. Like Braid, this is EXACTLY the sort of experience that deserves your support. The only difference is, this is about a thousand times more accessible than Braid.
And since Slater didn't do it, the home page is here: http://2dboy.com/

It's available for PC ($20) and as WiiWare. The difference between the two is negligible; on the Wii two people can play, which makes puzzles go faster, but that's it.
Yeah, this is fun. 1st time I've turned on my Wii is a couple of months and it was totally worth it. I'm addicted to building the damn tower with extra goo.

It's only $15 on Wii for some reason. But there's no demo.
Since I have a shitload of Wii points sitting on my console waiting for a port of Zombies Ate My Neighbors that apparently will never come, I think I'll pick this up.
I turned my Wii on for the first time in three months to get this game and now can't seem to ever STOP playing it.
Tested the demo, getting the game.
thanks Slater.

The windmill level = holy shit.
Good to hear. I could use me a solid puzzler.
Haven't played it yet, but thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'll be snagging this for my wife and I to play (glad to hear there is a co-op on Wii) soon.

Definitely one of the standouts. (Referenced it in my really shitty AVClub review of the game, even.)

The windmill level is a great example of what I love about this game. I didn't have to spend any time at all figuring out what to do, but quite a bit of experimenting went into how to make it happen.
At the risk of sounding* nerdy, I can't imagine any game this year having better sound design.

*heh heh
Dead Space is a killer in the sound dept, but that wasn't made by two guys.

Played for a few hours until I finally got stuck in Chapter 3. "The Third Wheel" is a bitch and a half.

But yeah, this game is incredible. In terms of charm and imagination, the Portal comparisons aren't too far off.
These guys deserve to be millionaires. If you don't buy this you're not seriously interested in gaming. It's delightful. And yes it's Portal level good. And I think that Portal was arguably the best designed game of the last decade.
I tried to download the demo at work and, with work being a Mac-zone now - realised this is the price I have to pay.

It looks particularly groovy and i'm happy to support new developers who don't half-ass their games.
Get used to that. It's coming out on the Mac "soon", but they haven't announced a date. If you have a copy of Windows lying around, you might want to go ahead and take advantage of Boot Camp.
I think i'll just wait till I get home to play it instead, i've still got a PC I keep handy for emergencies such as this.

I'm not tarnishing this beautiful new hardware with Windows.
I am so buying that for the Wii...
I'm gonna get this and TETRIS PARTY tonight! Glad to hear it's great.
Kinda sad that my laptop, which is only about a year old, is having trouble running this without clipping and sound issues, but the demo's just so damn good, I'm willing to deal with it.

Sucker's good as bought on my next paycheck.
I bought this on Friday and ended up blowing through it by Sunday. Admittedly I had at least twelve skips available by the epilogue, so i think I moved past the two or three most difficult levels after giving them the ol' college try. I couldn't stop playing mostly because I had to see what was next.

One of the standouts for me was the Beauty Pageant level. Not that it was particularly difficult, but everything awesome about the game's presentation seemed to coalesce in that one stage.

Very, very interested in what these guys do next.
How is the replayability? Once you figure out a stage is there any point in doing it again? Might pick this up tonight, once I decide what to delete off my Wii(lousy fucking lack of harddrive).

Well, the object of each level is to get a certain amount of Goo balls into a pipe. Any extra Goo balls saved over that amount is sent to a separate level where you try to build the tallest Goo tower possible, competing with high scores around the world and whatnot.

Also, while there's obviously a designed solution for each level, I have a feeling the game encourages more lateral thinking than most puzzle games. There is probably more than one solution to each level.
I spent hours just fucking around with that "tower" demo that one of the designers put together in a day. Sheer brilliance.
I had missed when this was supposed to come out. I'll get it tonight on the Wii.

There's also an OCD option for each level with a specific goal (finish with 14 goo balls left over, beat a certain time, etc).
Just in case there wasn't quite enough love for this game, add this guy to the pile. Of goo.

ew.

The one thing I haven't tried out yet was, say, if you complete a level with 5 extra goo balls and then replay the level and get 6 extra balls, will the extra gooey gentleman go to the tower game? If so, I can see plenty of replay just to eek out an extra gooball or two for that tower.
I got the game. It's amazing. Any way of improving the graphic resolution? It's stuck in the lowest resolution and it would be great to be able to improve it, but i can't find any "options" or configuration.

The last three levels are legendary.
11.8 meters using 40 balls.

Pretty stable considering. I'll build it higher when I get further in the game.
Does anyone know if there's a way to do inventory on the number of goo balls you have left. I keep panicking over whether or not I'm using too many goo balls to solidify my structure and if I'll have enough left for the end.
Downloaded it tonight on the Wii. I've only played the first handful of stages, but the physics, music, and overall look/feel are pretty awesome.
"The Windmill" = Holly Shit.

You can change the screen resolution by editing the "config.txt" file in the Properties folder btw.
I was pretty skeptical when IGN was raving about WoG, but after playing the first few levels, I'm very glad I downloaded this tonight. This is exactly what WiiWare should be all about.
This game is making me use parts of my brain that I didn't know I had.

As if the rest of the thread hasn't said it enough... highly recommended.
Quite possibly Game of the Year, I suspect, and I'm only partway through.
The Portal comparisons are fairly apt- this doesn't match narrative to mechanics quite as well, but it's equally charming and inventive.
I can't wait until we get a new "Portal", or "Braid", so the Portal-esque and Braid-esque comparisons will cease.
Fuck I mis-read the title as "World of Groo"

You know, Groo the Wanderer?

By Sergio Argones?

From Mad magazine

ah the hell with it
So I tried to download this just now, and the Wii store is down for maintenance. *sigh* I want to play!
The personality in this game is astounding. Brilliant, utterly brilliant.
I finished episode 2 last night. I'm taking my time with it, only playing an hour a day.
Loving every second of it.
Spent almost all day playing it yesterday and am down to the final three levels. If there's anything more awesome this year than the change that comes from chapters 3 to 4, I don't think my mind will be able to handle it.
Holy fuck at the gravity level. Graphic Card i think it's called.

And yeah, chapters 3 to 4 shift gears in a great way. The originality of these puzzles is amazing.
Why am I having so much trouble on the next to last puzzle?
Holy shit I just downloaded it this morning and it's fuckin' addictive. Took me a while to figure out the Percolator (I kept trying to build straight up with that stupid woman ball thing until I figured out the "slingshot" method) and Fire levels, but I wasn't thinking in "Goo Terms" yet. Such a fun game. I'm at the end of Chapter 3 at this point which isn't bad for half a days work.

I think I'm gonna get started on my Goo Tower now.

Solution: Flip it end over end
