Worst Kept Secret -- SW:Old Republic MMO Announced

Set 300 years after the events in Knights of the Old Republic (and featuring some familiar faces), Star Wars: The Old Republic will put players on either side of a massive war between the Republic and the Empire. "It's not a day-in-the-life of Star Wars," Ray emphasizes; "It's about being a hero." They want the game to fit the scale and proportions of a conflict that spans the entire galaxy. The game will follow BioWare's emphasis on "choice with consequences" with room for players to be ambiguous or conflicted about their motives. In short, Greg says, it's what BioWare fans want: a perpetual RPG that delivers the full BioWare experience.
It's Bioware, which raises hopes, but the sting of Star Wars: Galaxies is going to be hard to get over.

No kidding there about SW:G, the only MMO I ever played that actually got worse with each major update. As a huge nerd I wanted to like it so much but it was just missing on so many levels. The crafting system was its best aspect(before it was later essentially removed)...so if thats the big draw from your MMO you know you've got problems.

Definately looking forward to playing this one when it comes out in probably 2010 or so at the rate these things tend to develop. It should be interesting to see Bioware's take on character balance given that everyone and their brother will want to be a Jedi and it would be rather odd to see a guy with a lightsaber and force powers legitimately requiring the assistance of a smuggler or something on too many occassions. Im also looking forward to seeing how the companion system works, I played in the beta for the since cancelled MMO Gods and Heroes which had a kind of companion system that wasnt terrible so Im excited to see what a more capable developer can do with the concept.

As a big fan of KOTOR who does not have the time or inclination to learn and keep up with a MMO game, I say: BOOOOO.

“Traditionally, massively multiplayer online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars — combat, exploration and character progression,” says Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder and General Manager/CEO of BioWare and General Manager/Vice President of Electronic Arts Inc..."

NO...MMOs are all about getting the coolest armor and weapons and then parading around the noobie areas and showing off. 'Look what I have, you fucking NOOB'

My expectations are being kept mellow at the moment. I was the kid that signed up for SWG forums as soon as it was announced. I spent hours reading everything that came out about the game. I got into the beta and had a fucking BLAST. Then it went live. And it was fun for a week. But I stuck with it for a year. Then the broken promises, the lame "episodes", then the dreaded NGE was announced. I quit cold turkey.

But.....

Bioware....KOTR.....must stay grounded....

Thirded.

I just can't get up for this. I was pretty disappointed with Jade Empire and Mass Effect, though I did really enjoy KOTOR. And considering this is Bioware's first MMO there is likely to not be a lot of polish to it.
Let's be fair: 70% of Mass Effect aside, there's never been a whole lot of polish in their SINGLE player games, either.

Exactly, and if an MMO isn't really polished it has no chance in the MMO market today. WoW and WHO are really polished experiences, and Champions is looking great as well.

For the first time ever, I'm tempted to try out an MMO game.

After Galaxies, I think there's zero chance this comes out anything less than polished. They'll push back the release date before they put out another sub-standard Star Wars MMO.

I'm kinda torn. On the one hand, another single-player KOTOR would be divine. On the other, being able to travel across the galaxy with my buddies and kill things with lightsabers would be aces.
I suppose with this being 300 years after the last game, there's nothing stopping them from going back and doing another single player game finishing off the storylines it left hanging. Not holding my breath though.

After way too many hours (and years) in text based MUDS, Meridian, and Everquest that finally led to my destroying the game disks and vowing never to return to that particular form of gaming, I was convinced that if Warcraft, Warhammer, and Conan didn't pull me back in, nothing could.

A PC KOTOR MMORPG? 50/50 chance. A console version? Oh crap, it's on like Donkey Kong.

Here's an IGN walkthrough from GC. Looks like Star WoWs, but it will probably be great. It's four parts, totaling about 20 minutes and shows off a pretty decent chunk of gameplay. The E3 stuff left me a little cold, but now I can see myself sinking what little free time I have into this game when it comes out.

ETA: It's been up for a few days, so I didn't submit it as news. Sorry if I made an uh-oh.

A little curious as to how there can be Imperials and Grand Moffs when the Empire doesn't exist yet.
The Sith Empire count as Imperials in Kotor, though I dont remember enough of KOTOR to know if they were calling people Moffs yet.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers MUDs and MUSHes. I think they are what has kept me from ever dipping my toes in to MMORPG waters.

Beta signups opened today, but the site apparently got bent over a pinball machine when they announced it, and it's temporarily down for maintenance. Should be back sometime this afternoon.

Anyone already get in?
Thanks for the tip. I'll try and get in later on today.

Did you see any tentative release date for the actual game?

Crap, they're not offering anything through File Planet. Guess I'll have to wait for the site to come back up.

I think I'm registered. It seems to be more forgiving in IE, and what finally worked best for me was to just register for the site, and bail before applying for the beta. Just make sure you get your site login verified and all, then come back, log in, and attempt the beta signup.

I still got stuck on the system scan-- I'll try that again in a different browser.

I'm at work so can't do the system scan, but I did everything else. I'll run the scan when I get home.

I was registered on the first day the site was active, and all I was able to do this morning before work was validate that I had an account. I was using Firefox, but it just kept sticking me in an endless loop of information submission.

Yeah, I read that people were experiencing that more in FFox (and I did, too), so I tried IE.

Finally completed the System scan in FF, though, since it wasn't working in IE. Jeez, hoops aplenty.
Oddly, this morning I was able to finish the information in FF, but the system scan just sat there. I'll try again tonight, that system scan is just poorly put together. I'd much rather have some % showing rather than a droid making a holographic line that gives you no indication if you just need to be patient or if you need to shoot it in the head.
I had the same scan issue and it turned out I needed to run IE in compatibility mode, whatever the hell that means for it to actually let me see buttons. Otherwise it would do the scan but the submit and cancel buttons never showed up. If you need to mait more than ten seconds with the scan then its not working since it only checks like five things. With FF it wouldnt run the scan at all, maybe its a Windows 7 issue or something, it seemed a little odd that they didnt just ask for a dxdiag to be uploaded like most other games.

Apparently my java wasn't updated to whatever version they needed. I got it working when I got home and got everything submitted. That's a lot more work than I'm used to just to not get a beta invite.
