The saddest thing about the Comments

Thread Starter
is how many registered board members go their to shit on the site in anonymity. If you don't like something we've done or are doing, have the balls to complain about it as yourself.

The saddest thing is that almost nobody ever gets banned here. They certainly don't get banned for giving me or Nick a hard time. Yet there are cowards who disagree with the banning of Yomad - who was warned on numerous occasions to stop posting news on the board - who won't speak up under their own names.
Even sadder - "their real names" on the boards often isn't even "their real names."

Still not sure what the Comments section adds, unless it is flypaper to keep some of the mouthbreathers off the boards...
Maybe people feel ashamed of themselves for some of the ridiculous bs they put on there (which they should be), so they post even more anonymously. I still think the comments section should be turned off for most articles, maybe reserved for things that actually invite normal and rational conversation, like the weekend discussion articles. They actually seem normal there.
You could always show IPs in the posts, but I'm sure many won't like that.
What made you guys bring the comments back? I thought that was gone after the last go around?
I also thought the comments were brought back to keep the STUPID shit outta the boards. Or some swill like that. I ALWAYS ignore them. They're fucking pointless. Sorry.
No, the comments were so people could talk about the articles without wading through the forums in-jokes. It's blown up in the site's face, but there've been days where I understood the wish.

But I think it's myopic to think everyone shitting on the main page via the comments are also board members. It's like when the forums all assume some new douchebag is a returning banned troll.
Posting Ip's in the comments is a dumb idea. That shit should be private, but i have no problem if the Staff can see the Ip and Ban accordingly.
To steer this one back on topic away from the fruitless comments vs. no comments discussion:

Why do people think they can post in the comments under the blanket of anonymity when they have registered and leave their ip adresses that are bound to be the same as their board account ones? It is not that these boards are exactly strict on giving each other shit for valid or invalid reasons? It is not like the comments actually stir a lot of discussions. Well, I guess I have to read the comments now.

Weird.
I just figured that the comments were for people who aren't signed up to the boards.
Why not just force people to post comments under their usernames? It's done on the main board.

I have never heard from any staff that comments are only for those who don't post on the main board. If that's the case, cool, but right now the comments just seem like an attempt to drum up interest in the news items that has backfired.
I didn't say it's only for people who don't post on the forums, I just thought that was the primary demographic.
How about you don't be a baby and ignore the dumb comments as is your usual plan?
The comments will SOON be linked to the M<B accounts

Sorry. I just finally got sick of you being useless and wrong all the time.

How am I wrong? Is that not what he usually does?

I imagine you're one of the people shitting in the comments.

I'm one of your most vocal defenders.

I sent you a pm saying thanks for letting us know about Let The Right One In and keep up the good work for Christs sake.
I post under both, but more on the forums. I'm not doing it for the anonymity - rather for convenience. I post as 'duh' everytime.

Kiss-ass.

Bets on who Sleestak Vagina Face might be? I'm lookin' at you Dellamorte...
Not at all, I just find it a bit insulting to be called a hater by one of my favorite journalists.

I'm pretty sure he's the old troll leeVsBenway, as he admitted it in a pre-ban meltdown. Very anticlimactic.
Oh wow. Look at the guy who reads online journalists and has a girlfriend. What an absolute freak of nature or liar. My god. Stand back ladies and gentlemen.

Is this decision past the point of no return?
I think a AICN-style separate login for talkbacks and the forums("the Zone" in AICN's case) would be much better, and have the nice side-effect of keeping things a little less crazy on the boards(educated guess).

It isn't that you read online journalists, but that you have a "favorite" one and it hurts your feelings when he bitches at you despite you kissing his ass. And it isn't weird so much as it is funny.
Ha, it is kind of funny.

When you put it that way...

Any word if this is still happening?

The reason I ask is it seems like the anonymous sniping (mostly aimed at Devin) has once again overwhelmed the intelligent discussion in the front-page comments section.

It would be nice if something could be done to improve the discourse going on among this site's readers; actual log-ins and some moderation seems like a good first step, if that's doable.

I agree. The anonymity is the most frustrating aspect. If peeps are going to snipe then peeps are going to snipe - a hater's gonna hate. But it's the level cowardliness of the sniping that leaves the bad taste, and that cowardliness is enabled by the anonymity.
To me, the comments are pointless. I have absolutly no problem agreeing with or disagreeing with Alex, Nick, Devin or anybody else's articles in the forums. I'm not going to waste time reading idiotic comments made by people who can't even be bothered to maintain an online identity.
The comments are not pointless! The Lost Rewatch column comment section has been fantastic.
Alright, corrected I stand. I'm not a lost fan, so I hadn't seen that one.
The comments on my articles have been pretty decent for the most part, with a few getting great discussions, in fact. I don't mind getting called out on dicky comments I make, it's part of the fun- just wish we could post more than one response. Nick and Devin still get a lot of nonsense regardless of their content, though.

If you switch to a different web-browser, you can.
Yeah, or proxy, but it's a needless pain in the ass. I know there are people who would comment more if they could, and the back and forth would certainly be interesting. The Lost column could definitely use it, for instance.
I, for one, have frequently posted in the comments as I was not yet a registered member on the boards, and I may again in the future if the mood strikes me. Yeah, the comments often get pretty stupid, but it's part of the site's "transgressive" appeal, and they are rarely as juvenile as the AICN Talkbacks. Let the haters hate. Faithful Chewers have the forums. If the site administrators are concerned about the "public persona" of CHUD.com, they should encourage more registered users to post in the comments, if only to bring the balance back ("Battle of Evermore" reference - sorry, hippy-haters).

It's weird that you can't, especially as a staff writer. I'm sure I've seen comments sections where someone has responded more than once.

You can post twice if you clear out your cookies, or at least the chud.com cookie. Or use a different browser with cookies turned off.
Can you read the Matrix Trevor?
I like the angry Black Christmas fan going off on the Year Of Living OCD Halloween entry.

Yeah, is that a total nerd-rage meltdown or what? Dude got so overheated he ended up not even making any sense. Why can't you love Halloween and Black Christmas?

Agreed. When you only have one shot, commenting feels more like an effort to get everything in you could possibly say about an article, rather than participating in a discussion.

I guess the ominous downside is that the ability to post multiple times allows those who use the comments to only call Devin fat or Nick...er...um...whatever they call Nick, a license to spam.

An unrequested suggestion would be quick registration for commenting, a swift banhammer and deletion of ad hominem attacks.

That should happen. Attacking the writer's points is fine. Attacking the writer's character? Fuck off.

What if that really WAS Owen's grandma, though?
