Wouldn't that mean more page hits though? More revenue?

Yeah, thus the need for heavy-handed deletion/banning (which might be a time-consuming duty).

I can't believe the hate in the "If CHUD Ran..." comments. Can't people enjoy something innocent and silly and fun, or just ignore it?

That's nature man, the weeds attack the roses and the slugs attack the fruit. With incomprehension and insults. Or something.

CHUD just needs some weed-killer and pesticide.

Just checked it out, it's mad. Especially as Guver and dolls is pretty funny.

It's hard to pick the worst thing about the comments... They're like herpes that way.

1) People steal the identities of board members, and post defamatory comments under their usernames. All of this designed is to make fools of the people on the board. It's awful, and it's happened to me before. I now don't post on the comments at all, ever. Why? Because I don't want people to get confused thinking that it really was me talking about how much I love TWILIGHT.

2) Rude/Hateful comments about site and staff. I know better than to believe the garbage they are saying, but if someone just stumbled onto CHUD one day, the kind of nonsense that gets spewed forth from the comments could really give them a warped perspective of what CHUD is all about

For the record, I discovered CHUD by stumbling upon it one day when IMDB linked to it. If the first thing I'd seen when I read an article was racist/hateful bile, than yeah, I might not have come back.

3) Racist/hateful stuff that isn't necessarily about Devin/Nick. It's still awful, and it still makes the site look bad

I don't much notice the comments, but I'm kind of curious to know what the purpose is of having two separate places to comment on the same articles.

(Probably asked and answered in dim antiquity; indulge me)

Most of the venomous comments are on Devin's articles and they're obviously by frustrated forum guys. Devin's made more enemies in the forums than with any of the columns he's ever written. Couple that with the threat of being banned for lashing out at him and people take it to the comments section where their bullshit can go unpunished.
It's not complicated. The comments section will continue being this way until Devin starts giving everyone in the forums (and those that were banned) hand jobs in his free time or these fucks are forced to register... which probably destroys the purpose of them I guess.

BTW, I am not condoning what these dipshits are doing. I'm just saying, it's an inevitability until things change so don't read them if it bothers you. I never do anymore.

That's just the best example of "if you don't at least chuckle at this, why do you even come to this site?" I guess it's good to let humorless hacks know they are in the wrong place.

I don't even read the comments. reminds me way to much of the talkbacks and I'd rather not have anything in my mind linking AICN with this site. That said, I think linking the comments and the forum accounts would be a great idea and really force people to think about what they wanna post.

This, in particular, is so childish. Reminds me of that episode of The Simpsons where Homer goes to college... And he makes a prank call to the dean from a pay phone across the street.

Quote:
Hello Dean... You're a stupid head.

Homer, is that you?

D'oh.
I occasionally post in the comments section. But, the more I think about them, the more pointless they ultimately seem. And I know that's not fair to everyone who posts with something actually interesting to say. I guess I should read them more often, but having to slog through such a parade of immaturity and mean-spiritedness is daunting.

I don't read the comments, either.

I'm not seeing a whole lot of support for them. Eileen had a good point about the Lost ones, but that seems to be the exception. I don't read them, don't care about them, but I am curious why they are there. They seem redundant to the forums. Is it just an attempt to create a "forum-light"? Does the casual Chud reader need them to help shape his/her own opinion of a story?

They're an attempt to let non forum users have their say and possibly drum up more traffic for the site.

They've been removed and brought back 3 times now, so I think that at this point bitching about them is like bitching about the lack of rep. Anyway, they're pretty easy to ignore.

The point is that there are a ton of people who don't want to go the process of joining the message boards (we are a small fraction, but probably the biggest "fans" of the site). They are for people who might have been sent a link or just want to say good article. They allow for easier participation.

On the other hand, calling out people who say something sucks in a comment is ridiculous. They aren't called the "warm fuzzy comments." If someone can't take anonymous, "this article sucks" then they probably shouldn't be writing on a public website. And I'm not saying of Devin or Alex do that. They are both way too smart to give any credence to a simple "hated it," without any back-up.

Criticism of an article should be welcome. It makes people better writers. Yeah, I hated it when someone pointed out a screw-up, but I did my best to learn and build from it.

If all people were doing was criticizing the content of the articles, that would be one thing. The reality is that there is a small group of people who dedicate a sizable portion of their time to calling out Devin on his dislike of Avatar / The Dark Knight, or whatever recent blockbuster Devin wasn't hot on. They constantly harp on his journalistic integrity, personal life, appearance, and goodness knows what else.

Most sites have a log-in system for their comments. I particularly like the system at the Gawker network (Gizmodo, Kotaku, etc.), where the best contributors are promoted, and the troll posts aren't usually even seen at all. You might also look into using the Facebook Connect system, which has the added benefit of people using their real names.

I suppose it's possible that Devin likes things the way they are, and even enjoys his position as an iconoclast among movie nerds. If so, carry on, I guess. I just know I'd like it better if the tone of discussion was a little more civil.
Of course, personal attacks are not welcome, anyone should be subject to scrutiny regarding the content of article. Which again, not saying Devin or Alex or anyone else is saying something different.

Some people are just really spineless, and some never leave the playground.
