That new Rhianna song

Did her producers punk her or is she punking her fans? Hearing kids singing the Numa Numa song at the top of their lungs makes me laugh every time.
Her fans punked themselves by being fans in the first place.
Rhianna is great.

(that's awesome, the spellchecker doesn't correct Rhianna)
I am tempted to pretend someday that this fucking music doesn't exist.
I don“t know that song. I only know that she is actually spelled Rihanna.
Are we talking about Disturbia here? Because I really don't hear the Dragostea Din Tei comparisons, at all.
I'm assuming we're talking about this one, Spike.
I'm less bothered by the numa numa than I am by T.I. I can't stress the level of hate I have for about 92% of all current rappers.
What, T.I. rapping about how a girl can have whatever she likes isn't deep enough for you?
Any kind of disdain for Rihanna baffles me. She makes great, danceable pop music.
That song is horrible.

Eh, If he would have at least mentioned that he was "rolling on 22"s" while rapping about a girl having whatever she wants. Then I might have overlooked his paltry performance.

I just hope it doesn't take to long to get through this one. I mean does anyone really care what kind of rims your car has and how much "ice" you own? I guess there will always be some people who cherish that sort of thing over substance but this generation is chock full of them and it seems to get worse every day.
Can't we go back to the whole East vs. West thing? Sure, a lot of rappers missed the point in some of the lyrics, but that was the last time rap was interesting.
We should just have a "Pop Music Bitchfest" Thread.

The lyrics to "Whatever You Like" are pretty atrocious, but goddamn if it isn't a catchy motherfucker. Like I said in the other songs threads, it's definitely better than "Lollipop." And for some reason unknown even to me, I really like the phrase "rubber band banks in my pocket."

The Rhianna song in question, eh, it's okay. I like it better than "Disturbia," if only because the Numa Numa sample is hilarious to me. Nothing she does will ever be as good as "Umbrella."

I love pop music, but for some reason I just can't get into Rihanna. I found the "Umbrella" song annoying until I heard it sung by Mandy Moore and the emotional impact of the lyrics were able to emerge. Of the other Rihanna hits I've heard, they are only interesting to the degree that she samples other songs. "SOS" was tolerable because of Tainted Love" and "Please Don't Stop the Music" because of "Wanna be Starting Something". Additionaly, Rihanna is so manufactured there isn't any personality I can connect to. She's no Britney, that's for sure.

And I can't reiterate how funny I find it that she sampled Numa Numa.
Am I wrong or she didn't?
I mean, is this song not on T.I.'s album and Rihanna's only a guest star?
Holy Christ, I'm listening to "Whatever You Like" again and I'm now confident in saying that the voice-doubling technique has hit an all-time low.
I actually kind of like Paper Trail as an album, never ever clicked that Live Your Life's backing vocals were Rihanna though. Really should pay attention to track listings.
I love dancing to Don't Stop the Music, cause people want to dance to that, But DJ Lance jokes that too often all people want is Justin or that song. That said, one of the highlights of my recent was a gay dude just losing his fucking mind in his car to Don't Stop the Music, dancing his brains out while everyone around was starring and pointing, but he was in the moment.

Hmm, I just looked this up. You're right. "Live Your Life" is on T.I.'s album. I've only heard it in reference to Rihanna. Doesn't make a difference to suckiness of the song.
I like the Captain America shield on the elbow of Rhianna's leather jacket.

I agree.

Wow, I don't like Moore's version. The lyrics are the worst part of the song, and accentuating them seems like a weird idea. Especially when this version is lacking "Umbrella"'s real charms, such as the catchiness of the beat, and Rihanna in that maid outfit.
Yeah, that Moore version is pretty fucking terrible. The emotional impact of the lyrics is not what makes Umbrella a good song.

You guys are totally right. How could I not understand that a woman gyrating to dance beats in a maid outfit is a perfect metaphor for love and friendship being the foundation for a good relationship, one that will sustain through good times and bad? Glad you set me straight.

I could give two fucks about the video. The arrangement/instrumentation/beats and the vocals are what make it a great pop song, as is often the case with pop music.

But if you want to talk good covers of that song, I like this one a lot:

It's akin to adapting Transformers into a stripped-down stage play. You'd be throwing out all the areas where the artistry is good, and leaning on the lines, which can't handle it, no matter how well written the actors pretend they are.

Fine. It's not the lyrics that I'm drawn to, its the arrangement. It still doesn't change the fact that the way Rihanna performs the song hides the artistry behind bells and whistles. It makes listening to the song less enjoyable.

Believe me, you have no idea. And admittedly Disturbia is fun to dance to while buzzed I'll give ya that.

Of all the female pop artists out there, you're going to knock one of the talented ones down a peg for making a tongue-in-cheek video?

I can't possibly imagine how odd it must be in a situation where you lot actually just enjoy music for a change.

I've never seen the video. I was responding to Kimbell's comment. I guess I disagree with you that she's got talent. Insert any random pop star in place of RiRi and the songs would still be a hit. I fail to see her contribution.

I'm just as baffled as everyone else is that I dislike Rihanna. My entire mp3 collection is pop music. I guess I just don't like the sound of her voice, which gets amplified with every "eh eh" and "bum bum be-dum" she howls over every song.
My apologies, I mistook "the way she performs the song" for you to mean her physical performance on video.

It's not a crime not to like something popular. I wouldn't worry about it too much, the processing on her voice for certain tracks may well be an aquired taste. It bothers me more that I like it, since i'm not really a fan of pop music - maybe that's why it's so divisive?

You could make this argument about virtually any contemporary pop star of that ilk. It's weird to single out Rihanna and proclaim "she's no Britney, that's for sure." Their respective successes and failures are entirely dependent upon the work of their writers, producers, etc. You can't seriously make a case for Britney Spears as auteur any more than you can for Rihanna.

I was talking personality. When I see or hear Britney, no matter how tragic the song or video I feel compelled to watch. I have the exact opposite reaction to Rihanna. Like I said, I don't know why she irks me more than other pop stars. Probably because as the "it" girl of the moment she's constantly in my face.
I think most of Rihanna's songs are catchy and that includes the new T.I. song. The girl knows how to work with the right people.

If she goes bat-shit insane, shaves her head and gets addicted to seven layer burrito's would you like her more? Just asking...

I just noticed this is in the Music forum.

Well it is supposed to be a discussion about the song. But people generally like it, so the discussion moved on to other things.

Who wouldn't?

Frankly, I think Rihanna and Kelly Clarkson are easily the two most talented female pop artists working today. Vocally, Rihanna has got some true talent and pipes. There's no one that sounds like her, and that uniqueness is evident in all of the tunes I've heard from her, not to mention her knack for delivering effortless power-pop.

That's understandable. Of course you can't miss that forehead of hers. Yowza.
I like it, the Numa Numa thing was a good pop hook long before that chubster made his mediocre Youtube 15 minutes with it so I don't associate it with that so much. Umbrella is fun to play and sing acoustic too, as long as you put some balls into it, and Please Don't Stop The Music is great. Disturbia can fuck off, as a tune it's not the same calibre as the others.

I agree with Ray that her and Kelly C are making good pop music but to me it's Christina and Pink who are still at the top of that league.
I always knew Dragostea as an European somewhat gay pop song. Didn't know about the fat guy until he began getting parodied.

Probably "somewhat" is selling it short though.
"I'm the opposite of moderate. Immaculately polished. With the spirit of a hustler and the swagger of a college kid."

I don't exactly what it is about those lyrics and the way T.I. delivers them but they make me want to punch him square in the mouth again and again and again.

I heard Chris Brown was singing "No Air" before he struck Rihanna.
