Are you gonna get back on the saddle?

ETA: I want to thank all of you for your help. All of you have been fantastic in retreading a topic that has been done to death. I think I might get the Xbox Pro bundle this weekend. I'll be sharing my gamertag in the Live thread soon enough. I'd just like to see The Dark Knight in glorious HD at some point. I'll probably end up buying a stand-alone Blu-Ray player, especially if they have good sales on Black Friday.

Boys and girls: HD Streaming for Xbox 360 from Netflix!

This seals the deal.

all you have to do is download playon for ps3 and it can stream netflix, youtube, hulu, etc.

microsoft is trying to claim that the 360 is gonna be the first to stream hd movies but A) it's fake compressed HD and B) the roku is HD-ready so there's no reason it won't come to the Roku /PS3 immediately.

missed that you own a mac. i've got a pc desktop and macbook pro, so it's not an issue for me.

i also own a ps3, 360, wii, psp and ds. i use my ps3 the most and am more excited for playstation's holiday lineup (mostly resistance 2) than the 360's (left 4 dead does look awesome, but it's not exclusive). i guess my stance as a netflix subscriber (instant viewing will come to macs in the next month) is that for an extra buck a month i can consume all the blu-rays i want. that's HUGE for me. and i suspect that the ps3 will get a firmware update to address the netflix issue in the coming months.

i have an elite. the HDD is kind of excessive for what's currently available. i was hoping to future proof the system, but the only way to truly do that is what sony did: allow people to swap in their own internal HDDs. you can make em as big as you want and it's cheaper than microsoft's proprietary HDDs.

good on you for not considering the wii. garbage.

I have a Wii. It's good for what it is, and it's nice to play Wii sports when you have a party of people, but even that is getting old since most people have played Wii sports to death.

It's a shame that Wii sports is pretty much the only game that's worth a damn for the system. The virtual console is fun, and so are the Lego games--and even those lose their luster quickly.

I wouldn't want to sound like sour grapes, but since even the HD-DVD and Blu-ray distributors can't get their transfers looking and sounding amazing the majority of the time - we're definitely not in a position to be looking at streaming HD material.

Imagine the bitrate and resolution needed to barely pass this off as HD and you'll understand my issue with it being promoted as "high definition".

Even if HD is technically anything above SD.

Fair enough. But if Netflix can stream video of roughly 720p quality, I think that's a pretty big leap. To be fair, and at least to my eyes, I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080i on my 40" Samsung. I don't have a fancy audio set up (yet. I'll end up getting an Onkyo receiver at some point), so it could be that audio will suffer in order to get a better picture, i.e., no TrueHD sound. Nonetheless, I think we should all welcome this as good news.

I'm trying to move away from physical media. It's too expensive, not to mention environmentally unsound. I feel ashamed by the amount of plastic I have lying around in my house.

See what you think of the Peruvian booth tomorrow and I'll consider it. Although war games aren't really my thing.

If you had 1080 and 720 side by side on your TV you'd spot it in the blink of an eye, ignoring interlacing and progression.

Hippie.

Will you be around Century City tomorrow? We can make it a date! In a very hetero, masculine way, obviously.

You're probably right, but don't you think that the big difference in quality is the jump from SD to any form of HD, and that the difference between the various HD formats is just an increase in quality at the margins, especially given the size of TVs available to mere mortals?

Not really. I'm over here on the Brentwood side of things. It would be kind of difficult to make the slog on Santa Monica over to where you are. So any lunch dates are out of the question. Maybe something afterwards.

I've got a 40" Samsung like you. The jump from 720 to 1080 seems more subtle, but is as decent a jump in figures as standard is to 720. Thing is, there's only so much clarity you'll notice at a certain distance from your set.

SD looks as clear on a 32" set at 7 feet as 720 does at 4 feet.

Text's a good example, since most HD consoles are using it quite a bit in their backend operating systems. It's clear on player tags during multiplayer.

Get used to 720p enough and suddenly 1080 will become obviously better, just like 720 did to SD.
