My hopes for the Obama Half-Hour Variety Extravaganza:
A 30-minute long version of the Mike Gravel ad where he stares at the camera for a semi-eternity then chucks a rock in a pond.
OR, a half-hour standup routine consisting entirely of "Republicans walk like this, but Democrats walk like this."

You know, I was thinking the exact same thing. 30 minutes of Obama staring into the camera. Of course Cocoa Sugarbaker would probably suffer from a bad case of the vapors if that transpired.
On a serious note, I think it'll have a ton of testimonials in it that emphasize the "it's not about me but it's all about you" message he's been trying to convey for a while now. The last thing I expect is a victory lap. Every presidential campaign knows the cautionary tale of Truman vs. Dewey.
On the political front, I think this has many advantages. For one thing, it eats up alot of news cycles before with the speculation on what will be broadcast and even more analyzing the content of the ad the day after.
Another advantage is that the 30 minute buy shows that Obama isn't taking the election for granted. Sure McCain would like to spin this into Obama "measuring the drapes" but most people know that you don't buy 30 minutes of national air time for ego purposes.
Finally, it's a campaign event. I think we can agree that there are 6 touchstones or events that people center on in the general election. The 4 debates and the 2 conventions. This Obama infomercial gives people another thing to look forward to in this election season that goes beyond the stump speeches and 30 second ads. Depending on how it plays, this could give Obama a convention like bounce going into Tuesday.
My out there prediction, and there's no basis for it, is that McCain will buy up time after the special for a "rebuttal" ad that's maybe a minute. I base this on nothing except the thought that McCain is known for his dick moves such as picking Palin right after Obama's convention speech. We'll see.
