Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, for the DS

It has been feeling a little slow for the handhelds in recent weeks, but from time to time good stuff still trickles out. Case in point, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia for the DS. I knew it was looking good and I knew it was out sometime soon, but I was not aware that it came out last week until I stumbled upon it over the weekend and picked it up as if Pavlov had rung a bell.

It's so far another top notch Castlevania presentation from Konami, and the difficulty seems a bit higher than some of the recent efforts. I'm not too far into it yet and some of the bosses have been wiping the floor with me. It looks great, sounds great and plays great. The now familiar, underlying formula is there, but as far as I'm concerned from one game to the next they manage to change things up juuuuuuust enough to keep me interested. If they can keep them on making them as entertaining as this I wouldn't mind a new one every year.

So here's a heads up to anyone else who might be interested in the new Castlevania game and I'm also curious to hear some other chewer thoughts on it as well.

Like what little I've played so far, but I'm a sucker for the Castlevania GBA and DS games; there have only been two (Harmony of Dissonance and Portrait of Ruin) I didn't really like a lot.

But for now, this sucker is buried under many other games. That'll change if I actually have to appear for possible jury duty tomorrow.

I'm a Castlevania biatch, though.

Really enjoying this.

I enjoy the post-Symphony of the Night/Metroidvania formula well enough, but I'll always be a classic Castlevania fan first and foremost, so the structural similarities to Simon's Quest are awesome. I love that there are actual levels instead of just one giant castle, which really cuts down on the repetition and backtracking of the more recent games. The level design is also more varied, which is a welcome sight. It's cool to see deserts, swamps, ice caverns, and oceans instead of just castle wall after castle wall.

I also like that the difficulty has been bumped up a notch. I love that you've got to change up weapons for enemies, too, and the fact that you can make three sets of Glyphs to switch between is a neat addition.

Also, this game finally answered a question I've long held about the Belmot clan and its continued existence, so that was cool.

Anyway, I can't really gush enough over this one. I was worried that the series was losing steam by simply retreading Symphony of the Night over and over again, but this one combines the better parts of the SOTN structure with some classic elements that makes it an absolute blast to play.

Portrait of Ruin, really? I thought it was one of the best.

I'm devising a way to get my hands on this on the cheap.

I didn't hate Portrait -- it's got some great stuff. But I know I didn't finish it, either, so there was something lacking. The other GBA/DS games I liked I tore right through.

Konami needs to make one of these for Wiiware, and release Castlevania III while they're at it.

I've barely touched my copy of Portrait of Ruin (somehow got stuck in the first area, and didn't make any more progress), so I won't snag this right away, but I will play it eventually. Good to hear nice things from you fellas.

They definitely need to put Castlevania III on VC-- even if I do still own the NES cart.
