Very cool move by Mendes. I love his eye but wish his movies were better.

MSJ wept. No one else did.

The bad news is that Preacher is moving forward in a major way.
I agree with this. That there's a Preacher movie potentially in the works is kind of neat, but at the same time I don't know how the story could be appropriately captured on film.

Granted I'm still interested by the news and will give the project the benefit of the doubt until I see it.

Even with a culling of some of the extraneous plotlines, you're still looking at a solid 3 movie package to tell the entire story right. The 'Salvation' storyline would make a great standalone movie, as would the 'Good Old boys' one shot.

I can't wait for Utah to get a load of the descendent of Jesus Christ flinging shit on people.

Mendes can work a camera, but he can't get me to relate to any character that camera is pointed on. Here's hoping that changes.

That's unexpectedly cool. I'm hot-and-cold when it comes to Mendes, but I agree with Devin that part of what makes Preacher work is that it's an outsider's fantasy of America. I'm kind of disappointed that it's not an HBO series, but even a tv series would have to make some changes to the narrative (like Salvation). I was a hardcore fanboy for this series when I first read it in trade, but I haven't picked up the collection in years. I should revisit it, especially in light of this news. I'm excited for this one.

I just bought 3 of the 4 Preacher collections I didn't own the other day. It's one of those things I think can transfer so well to film that I'm actually willing to risk failure just to see someone try. Devin makes some valid points though.

Mendes went with Michael Sullivan killing Harlen Maguire at the end of Road to Perdition because he felt that having Sullivan Jr. kill Maguire (as it goes in the original GN) was "pushing the bounds of good taste". I found that odd coming from the guy who directed American Beauty, and now I find even odder coming from the guy who just signed on to do fucking PREACHER.

Be that as it may, he's not Mark Steven Johnson, and this is a good thing. This at least has me curious, MSJ's involvement had me in tears.

If memory serves, Garth Ennis had a draft for 'Preacher' that essentially covered the first 2 trade paperbacks but removed Arseface from the equation. Did this script ever see the light of day?
I'm not sure about the Arseface thing, but I do recall there not being a single good review of the script from anyone that read it.

Not knowing very much about Preacher, i'll reserve comment on whether Mendes is the right director for this (though it does seem an odd fit, even to me).

But I love me some Road to Perdition. That's a fine, fine underrated film.

I'm in. I have absolutely no idea how it would work as a single movie, but damn if I'm not terribly interested in seeing how the gamble pays out.

And to correct, Conrad Hall knows (knew) how to shoot the shit out of a camera.

Sam Mendes? The fuck?
After Daredevil and Ghost Rider, Mark Steven Johnson should go on directing zilch.
Wow. I'm shocked about this news, and completely torn as well.

On the one hand, I'm glad it's out of MSJ's hands (though that was already the case), but I'm feeling a great deal of "WTF!?" over Mendes taking over.

You need someone with a serious inner-degenerate to pull Preacher off properly, because a big, big part of what makes the books so great is the extreme vulgarity of it all. If you start to neuter it (which by nature, a film will have to be neutered a whole hell of a lot), it's going to start losing its luster, quickly.

The MPAA isn't going to let Herr Star piss on a hooker in order to get it up, are they?

I've been saying it on the boards for years and I'll say it again. There should never be an attempt to make a Preacher film. It can NOT be done. Even if you you can work out a two hour story, you could never get anything but an NC-17 if you want to be even semifaithfull to the tone. Hopefully this will end up a dead project once again. Studios need to realize that some thing need to just be left in the medium they were created for.
I have no idea how this can work.

Preacher is a very "author" thing, for the movie thing to work as something, it needs to be infused with a new voice and I'm not really sure if Mendes is the appropriate guy, but say what you will about him, he counts as a "director", so it's better than say some soulless hired guy.

I see a very rushed, scatter shot, confusing movie being made, despite Sam Mendes trying to hold it together. And rest assured, it will probably be just one movie.

Fuck. Television series would've been tits...

Agreed. And unlike Wachmen, it was actually close to being a reality (albeit under the direction of a piss-poor filmmaker).

And once again, unlike Watchmen, you can legitimately state that there's no way they can include about 1/2 the book(s) in a film that has to be rated by the MPAA.

Man, what if they just hung their balls out and said "Fuck you, MPAA" and made history with the first big(ish) budget comic movie to be rated NC-17? I know, totally unrealistic pipe dream. Even still, who's to say it'd be good then?

Ennis say anything about this yet?

Mendes is at least a solid director...even if he is enamored with oscar-bait.

Seriously, this was my first impression as well.

It feels like Merchant Ivory wanting to make Repo Man or something

I'm not a big comic guy, but Preacher is the only series I've read the entirety of. Sure, I own my fair share of trade paperbacks (don't waste my money on single issues), but I own volumes one through nine of Preacher and I've read all of it. Twice, maybe three times. I love it.

Of course, being as epic as it is, a TV series sounds like a better idea to my inner fanboy, but I'd rather have a film from a talented director than a series from a hack. Yeah, Mendes is a talented guy. Whatever he makes great films of not, well, that's up for debate. I'm just scratching my head, wondering how a filmmaker whose previous work has been primarily sterile and quiet will tackle the sheer excess that is Preacher. Maybe it's an attempt for him to break free and try something new? A grand experiment for him? I don't know. I'm rambling.

Kenneth Brannagh's Thor. Sam Mendes' Preacher. What's going to fill out the What the fuck? comic book trio, Roman Polanski's Transmetropolitan? Jim Jarmusch's Power Pack?
