For those of you who always wanted to see seventeen-year-old Paul Thomas Anderson's short that led to and was a precursor to Boogie Nights. Behold.

Oh, awesome. Thanks. Invisible rep for you, sir.

Thanks Ambler, I've always wanted to see this. Surprised it wasn't an extra on the big Platinum Series DVD.

It's the kind of thing I'd never watch again, but I'm glad I saw it. Cool to see "the Colonel" in this too, as Horner.

(spoiler?) Wasn't expecting Diggler to die, either. Is that what killed Holmes, an OD?

No. It was AIDS that got him.

Not bad. Not the harbinger of greatness I expected, but well written for a 17-year old.

It's about as good as you can expect from a teenager. But lots of references to Boogie Nights, so it was worth watching in that respect. The guy who played Dirk in this one, played the stereo store customer Buck scares away with his country western music.

If I'd made this at 17 (especially in the pre-internet, pre-media staturation days) I'd be pretty fucking happy with it.

No doubt. I couldn't help but have ridiculous and unfair expectations just knowing how good PTA was only a few years later and having heard about this film over the years. It's damn entertaining, way better written than most student films I've seen, and at least as good as (and maybe better than), My Best Friend's Birthday (which was made by a 24 year old).

Agreed. I have to admit the ominous tone/music during the beginning credits amped me up for something better though.

That said, Anderson was always on another level if you ask me. His early films(discounting this, kind of) have a maturity about them far beyond his years at the time.

It's not perfect, but it's better than Amblin', which strangely has a reputation for being good.
Thanks for the link, Ambler.

While I wouldn't call Amblin' great, it's certainly good. But these things fall into a different category...the filmmakers are young and emerging into the genius' they'll become. Amblin', TDDS, and Bedhead are lightyears better than most short films, which tend to be horrendous, without even the production value to save them.

TDDS has shitty production value because that's what Anderson was going for. He's dealing with stripped down and bare characters and his camera, stock and lighting convey that perfectly.

Amblin' is a bit pretentious and misguided, but the virtuoso technique on display by a then 21-year-old Spielberg is superb and it's obvious why Universal hired him after seeing it.

Was looking for this to use in one of my 30 Day Film Challenge entries, and I can't get the video to play.

Was it taken down, or is my shit whack?
