Given his recent career, I think Cornell is in more than a few folks' "dead to me" file. But, yeah, he's very impressive.

Corin Tucker needs to be mentioned. She almost needs to be seen live for full appreciation, but her voice is a force of nature. She often toes the line between singing and screaming, Daltrey style.

Good call on Tucker, Dave.

More disgrace for the metal kids: The Deftones. Chino's scream kills small animals dead.
Ah yes, "Ticks & Leeches." It's been awhile since I've listened to Lateralus, so I'll concede your choice.

And fuck small animals - the first time I heard The Deftones' "Elite" I was knocked unconscious for 30 seconds.

Right guy, but my pick would be the "Iiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnn UUUUUUUUUUSSSSS!!!" at the peak of "Thalamus".

No disrespect to Patton, Daltrey, Halford....but I've never heard a male human voice in full voice do that.

You could really go through just about any of his Strapping Young Lad songs, and just appreciate what he can do, one minute he could be screaming his head and the next go into a more melodic/operatic singing voice.

Also, "Color Your World" from his solo CD Ziltoid the Omniscient, there's this part where he goes;

"I’m Ziltoid!
I don’t give a shit!
I live above earth!
In a rocket ship!
I’m Ziltoid!
The horror!
The horror!
I’m Ziltoid!
The horror!
The horror!
I’m Ziltoid!
The horror!
The horror!"

Even though the lyric is a bit silly, it's the intensity in the way he delivers it.

My choice for Rock's best screamers:
Roger Daltry
Bruce Dickinson
Rob Halford
Robert Plant
David Lee Roth

I'll add shout outs for Johnny Rotten "God Save The Queen" & Sid Vicious "My Way"

Damon Albarn of Blur's "Song 2"

Rob Tyner of MC5's "Kick out the Jams"

You have not just crawled out of a cave have you? I assume you have heard Van Halen once or twice? Dave throws some great screams.

I'll toss out Mark Arm, Jared Warren, and Marcus Durant of Zen Guerilla
post #61 of 104
I haven't listened to VH in a while. Recall the Roth being more about attitude than vocal prowess. Blanking on any memorable screams. Now Sammy on the other hand...

Good call on Mark Arm. "Touch Me I'm Sick" still rocks me.
I'm not the biggest Van Halen fan on the planet, but Running With The Devil's pretty much all the proof you need Diamond Dave deserves a mention.
Where the fuck does Diamanda Galas fit in here?

Also thirding Russ's mention of Araya in Angel Of Death.

And I'm a fan of Sebastien Granger's howls on DFA1979's You're A Woman, I'm A Machine. I think he'd get more traction here if they hadn't broken up.
Forgot about "Runnin' With The Devil".

Since you guys are bringing metal into it, I'll suggest Sebastian Bach. (The poor man's Cornell?) Guy could wail.

"Monkey Business" used to be a pre-game pump up song for my high school soccer team. Yeah, we were edgy.

I'd like to thank Justin for reminding me of the Deftones. Whenever I think of Chino, I think "When your RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPE YOU"LL BLEED OUT OF CONTROLLL!!!". Someone else brought up the Blood Brothers, and I consider them the opposite side of the spectrum. I saw them live opening up for another band, and damned if I couldn't understand a single fucking lyric. It sounded like the same pitch scream repeated monotonously for 45 minutes. In stereo actually, because it was two guys, doing the exact same thing.

That crazy fucker Nick Oliveri has a fantastic scream. (a little Black Francis, with some good James Hetfield.) Too bad he got his ass booted from QOTSA. I miss his vocals and bass playing.

He's singing in Mondo Generator now.

Ian Gillan w/ deep purple ( not Gilllian ) : child in time ( live )
Jim Morrison w/ the doors : the end ( live )
It's not actually a scream, but P.J. Harvey's long wail at the close of The Whores Hustle and The Hustlers Whore is epic.

Trent Reznor's had a few moments. "Mr. Self Destruct" and most of the "Broken" EP come to mind.

Also, Greg Dulli. Some epic screaming going on on both "Gentlemen" and "Black Love".

This is true. A lot of the time, he comes *this close* to going out of tune, but he seldom does.

I don't think anyone's mentioned Iggy yet. Funhouse is full of tremendous screams, but I think the one that opens "T.V. Eye" might be the quintessential Stooges scream.
Will Sheff's scream at the end of Black Sheep Boy.

"You CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN'T hide..."

I just listened to that this morning on the way to work and thought it was a contender.

Fuck yeah. There's something about that primordial howl that just makes me want to drink hard and break stuff.

Holy shit, we all forgot Henry Rollins. There's no actual singing there, all he does is scream. "Liar" is a definite contender for the top 10.

"Obscene" from The End of Silence and "Scream" from Black Flag's "My War" would heartily disagree with your choice for top 10. Especially "Scream". That's a song that makes me want to holler my lungs out until I spit blood.

If I had to go with a Patton track, "Jizzlobber" on Angel Dust has the best screeching I've ever heard. It still blows me away all these years later.

I don't know how that fucker hasn't blown out his vocal cords(an opinion that formed after seeing Fantomas live).

Between that and his work on Mr. Bungle - California, I totally agree.

I don't like your reasoning. Ticks & Leeches is totally different then The Grudge and Eulogy. Just because Maynard screams for the duration of Ticks - which is the entire reason why Tool rarely play it live - it doesn't necessarily make it better. Ticks definitely has one of Maynard's better screaming vocals but it's not because he hurt his vocal cords when they recorded the song.

I totally disagree. I love both bands and if any one of the two suck live, it's the Deftones.
I've seen the band 4 times live, and I can say with certainty: the quality of the Deftones live is entirely dependent on the band's sobriety level prior.

The band sober: You'll get a straightforward, but really solid set, where Chino's scream strips the varnish off brass.

The band intoxicated: You'll get one of the sloppiest bands on the planet, but they pull B-Sides and covers out of their asses you never expect. My personal favorite: swapping out lyrics during Bored's bridge for the Gorillaz' Clint Eastwood for no good reason at all.
I think I've heard one good live recording by the band, out of I don't know how many. They're always sloppy as fuck, and they're never cohesive. And another thing, hardcore Deftones fans always rave about their B-Side and cover songs, I find them average at best.
I should qualify my absolute dislike of the Blood Brothers by excusing myself from that genre altogether. I saw them opening up for Coheed ( a band that also gets a lot of hate here). I actually liked the musicians in the band, but I just can't do 45 minutes straight of atonal screaming. There has to be a melodic balance somewhere.
They're later albums weren't all screaming.

My thoughts on Coheed, I don't even really know much of their music but I have a personal hatred for them.
I like Coheed's music a lot. I'm just always so disappointed once their lead singer opens his mouth.

Also, the fans that utter that band's name in the same breath as The Mars Volta deserve to never hear music again.
See, you either love Claudio's strange voice, or hate it. I'm in the former, but I can understand why people are in the latter. In the context of the thread, their bass player does the little bit of screaming that they incorporate, and he's got some good lung burners in there.

I'll stop my Coheed thread derail after this explanation for why I love that particular band, and why I'm surprised more chewers aren't into them. Musically, they're a conglomeration of Pink Floyd, Rush, and Zeppelin, with a modern aggressiveness. Lyrically, their songs all follow a sci-fi comic book that the lead singer is putting out at the same time. Claudio's voice, while sometimes quirky and strange in the highest registers, can still deliver some great sounds too. Anyway, I have no idea why anyone would compare them to The Mars Volta. Two completely different animals.

To add in another great screamer, Joan Jett has some great ones in there.
Just listen to "The Metal' to hear Jackie B keepin' the metal-scream alive. Not to mention pretty much every single D song.

Also, in the case of Reznor, I also submit "Heresy," "Closer," and "The Fragile" for consideration.
The Trent Reznor part of the conversation begins with Big Man With Gun, and ends with him screaming "I WANNA FUCK EVERYONE IN THE WORLD!" at the end of I Do Not Want This.

He is now successfully shoehorned in. Let us move on.
I'm a big fan of Reznor, and I don't think he even belongs in this thread. That said, good picks Justin.

That was the one I was clicking through iTunes for, trying to remember.
I think Trav picked the winner with Little Richard. He invented the rock n' roll scream. Everybody else is just doing some variation on what he originated.
Okay yeah, pretty much every verse after the first one in The Animal's "House of the Rising Sun." Go Eric Burdon.
Eric Burdon is a good mention. I couldn't think of the definitive example (been a while since listening to his stuff with War). Recall "We've Gotta Get Outta This Place" as having a good growly scream.
The thread title made me think of a newish Brit band called Rolo Tomassi who I saw supporting 65daysofstatic, which are essentially a techy-indie band fronted by a lead singer who sounds like a fucking jaguar.

In terms of screams which are decipherable I've always liked the way Win Butler (of Arcade Fire) shouts...'you ain't fooling nobody....with your lights out' on Power Out. When I saw them live he screamed that line with such force and clarity that the majority of the audience just sort of froze for a few seconds.

Bjork deserves some credit for her rambunctious performance of "It's Oh So Quiet."

Chino (Deftones) - Hexagram.

Al Jourgensen lets loose with a pretty good one in "Just One Fix"

His vocals are always so processed that it's hard to say what's actually coming out of his mouth, though. With the right distortion, you can make your voice sound a lot screamier (for lack of a better term) than it actually is. Same thing with Reznor.
Has anyone mentioned the dude from Fucked Up yet? Jesus. That guy sounds like he's been chugging shrapnel.
