Fernando Tatis (34)
Coming Back to the Mets

Quote:
NEW YORK -- Fernando Tatis agreed to a $1.7 million, one-year deal with the New York Mets on Thursday, opting to stay put after a solid comeback season.

Tatis, who hit .297 with 11 homers and 47 RBIs in 92 games, made $550,000 this season. He had been eligible for free agency.

"Fernando got so many key hits for us last year," general manager Omar Minaya said in a statement. "Not having him the last few weeks of the season certainly hurt. His versatility certainly makes us a better team."

Out of baseball from 2004-05, the 33-year-old Tatis gave the Mets a surprising boost after he was called up from the minors May 13. Filling in regularly for injured outfielders Moises Alou and Ryan Church, Tatis had a string of clutch homers and hits.

He separated his right shoulder in a 1-0 loss to the Washington Nationals on Sept. 16, sidelining him for the rest of the year.

"I feel fine now," Tatis said in a statement. "I didn't need surgery and I will be ready to go in the spring."

The Phillies are fucked with all the players up for Arbitration and free agency.

We are going to have to give Cole "MVP" Hamels a Santana-sized deal, Victorino and Howard are going to have to be renewed this year. I think Eric Bruntlett would be a decent replacement for Pat Burrell. Plus he can actually field.

I have heard that Matt Holliday may be interested in playing for us, but the Phillie's ownership are cheap bastards.

Meanwhile the Mets are going to up their payroll cause of the new stadium. You guys are going to get Matt Holliday and thus the division.

Cole has three arbitration years coming up. With what Ryan Howard got, I'm assuming the Phillies will not want to role the dice with Cole in Arb (though Howard was a super-two and really was a special case when he won his $10 mil arb award). He will not get Santana money (25/year), but possibly a 4-5 year averaging 12-14 per type offer. The Phillies still have leverage. I can see the Phillies trying to buy out two years or so of free agency more along the lines of Jake Peavy-Roy Oswalt type of offer.

Parade-time tomorrow. I'll worry about next year some other time.

Pat Burrell is going to be a DH next year.

We need somebody to post his 33 home runs next year. I WANT HOLLIDAY!

Edit: Your right, Archangel Ninja. PARADE TIME!

To be honest, if I were the Mets, I'd go hard after Brian Fuentez and Juan Cruz, trade Carlos Delgado and Luis Castillo for pennies on the dollar, and sign Mark Teixeira and Derek Lowe.

What do you wanna do with Murphy if he can't play second? The kid's a very good hitter. Very clutch for you guys.

Give me Peavy and Holliday for my Cardinals and I'm set.

I agree, and honestly, I'm high on the kid. Daniel Murphy has all the tools to be a productive hitter for years to come, but coming up as a third basemen for the Mets really does put him behind the eight ball. If Murphy can't handle second, he's going to have to go back to flailing around in left, because the Mets need his bat in the lineup.

Random Tangent — After last season, I never want to hear a Mets fan criticize Carlos Beltran again. Flanked by the likes of Evans and Tatis, Beltran played like Kelly fucking Leak last year in center.

Peavy has a no trade clause. Why would he want to go to St. Louis? He's Chicago bound, North or Southside. And who is leaving STL that will allow those contracts?

He gave a list of teams, which included the Cardinals, that he would waive his no-trade for. He said he prefers the NL, which, unfortunately for me, makes the South Side a pretty unlikely place for him to end up.

Matt Holliday of the Rockies has been traded to the Oakland A's...I fucking hate the Rockies ownership for making this happen.

Interesting, one has to wonder why the A’s choose to unload everything but the kitchen sink last season, only to trade for a one year rental immediately after.

Are the A’s actually plannning on signing Matt Holliday to an extension?
Cubs seem to be frontrunners for Peavy which makes me happy. More so if Dempster comes with him. Hope it happens soon.

I'm not sure if it's coming from just Cub fans but Adam Dunn keeps coming up as a player to get. They would definatly have the worst outfield in baseball with him but they need a few fresh faces who didn't choke the last 2 years. Plus every time he's in Wrigley he hits it out. Perfect AL guy.
Pat Burrell is all but assured to be leaving the Phillies. I would seriously consider using him as a DH if I were the White Sox or Twins. He can't field worth of a shit, but he is a solid 25-35 home run hitter.

The Phils are kinda of fucked. The Phillies ownership has an instinct for doing a Florida (Miami) Marlin's "fire sale". We need another pitcher. I don't trust that Blanton, Moyer, and Meyers will have type of career year next year. Plus Moyer has just filed for free agency.
So, I'll put money on Manny staying in LA at this point.

Have the Mets learned nothing from the Yankees passing on Carlos Beltran? You don't let a guy like Mark Teixeira go because you have an aging veteran on your roster. Even if Carlos Delgado performs next year, there are no internal options coming up, while Teixeira locks up first for years to come.
The Wilpons are probably looking at that payroll and getting a bit sweaty. I think I read Minaya say recently that he's happy with the offense the way it is.
Adam Dunn is made of OPS. Seeing how the Brewers offseason pans out, I'd love to see them make a play for him. Especially if the market somehow undervalues him because of batting average and strikeouts.

You want a team with a shitty defense to get worse? I didn't think offense was the Brewers problem. More RP and poor defense. Braun and Dun in the corners with a shaky staff should trouble you.

It depends on what you do with Dunn. The Brewers outfield defense was actually pretty stout last year and although Dunn would be a downgrade from Hart defensively, Dunn would be a vast improvement over Hart offensively.

Not to mention, you could always sign Dunn and trade Fielder to fill other needs. Dunn would upgrade the Brewers defense as a first baseman.
Our shitty defense is at First, Second and Third (not so much when Counsell played, very much the case when Hall played) Dunn would be considerably better than Fielder at first and far less likely to shove Manny Parra in the face. Hell, Dunn would be better than Weeks at second.
Yeah, and anyone who thinks that relief pitching was our huge problem and that our offense was amazing was probably not watching most of our games.

Now, lets not go overboard here. The defensive metrics indicate that Weeks has improved in many areas. His biggest problem is turning the double play, obviously. But the Brewers infield defense is really not helped at all by Fielder who really can't bring in anything that's a little offline or skips. He's easily the weakest link defensively.

Cubs land Gregg tell Wood to look elsewhere
Quote:
The Chicago Cubs acquired reliever Kevin Gregg in a trade with the Florida Marlins on Thursday, a move that appears to end Kerry Wood's career with the team.

Wood, the 1998 NL Rookie of the Year who saved 34 games this year, had been the longest-tenured player on the Cubs. General manager Jim Hendry said Wood was deserving of a three- or four-year deal and the Cubs are not prepared to offer him one.

In addition to the right-handed Gregg, who was the Marlins' closer until the final month last season, Chicago also has a talented set-up man in Carlos Marmol, who could close.

"We're just in a situation -- and Kerry fully understands -- that length of deal for the kind of salary that he could command right now is not our first priority," Hendry said during a conference call.

He said the Cubs need to finish their rotation -- they hope to bring back free-agent starter Ryan Dempster -- and add offense.
Looks like Marmol is the closer with Gregg as a set up man. Sad to see Wood go. I just hope he goes to the AL but I would guess the Mets.

Yanks are offering Sabbathia a 6 year deal for $140 million. Looks like that's going to be where he winds up.

Quote:
ESPN - As expected Friday, the New York Yankees officially tendered an offer to free-agent pitcher CC Sabathia.

The offer is expected to be six years in length and have a total value of slightly more than the record $137.5 million deal that pitcher Johan Santana signed with the Mets before last season.

Santana's deal had been the largest ever for a pitcher.

Friday represented the first day that free agents can be signed. The Yankees also are expected to make offers to free-agent right-handers A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.

Burnett has a four-year, $54 million offer from Toronto, while Lowe is looking for a five-year contract.
Their going to spend all the money they can to ensure making the playoffs in the first year of the new stadium.
It sucks knowing that the Braves are in the wilderness right now and that we're going to have to spend a couple years rebuilding.

In the meantime, I wait for Bobby Cox to fucking die already.
Dustin Pedroia was just named AL MVP.

whoo!
I really don't want the Yanks to bother with Burnett. I'm sensing a Pavano/Kevin Brown redux if he comes here.
Pedroia gets the MVP..same year as his first Gold Glove. Gets a World Series ring last year. Not bad for his first two year. Geez, might as well retire..how could it get any better?
Pujols gets the MVP! I'm a happy St. Louis fan.

How are you enjoying your offseason?

That might literally be the gayest/funniest thing I've ever seen. And I've see Return of the King. The picture was taken in Miami at Madonna concert. For serious.
I can't wait to pin that picture to a sign and check out the new Yankee Stadium.
I've always found A-Rod's...."sensitivity" to be rather amusing. The big reason Yankee fans will never fully embrace him is that he's such a emotionally soft player.

I must admit that the brutal mocking he'll get at Fenway is gonna make me laugh.

I was vehemently against the Mets signing KROD this offseason, of course, that was before I saw how much it would actually cost. Now go sign Juan Cruz already.
Yeah, I think the Mets need more in the pen. Cruz would certainly be a good pick-up. As impressive as Lidge was this year, Phils wouldn't have been close if it weren't for Durbin, Madson, etc. Ultimately what separated the two teams.

That J.J. Putz deal is a steal given the Mets needs, and almost seems to work out for everyone involved. Endy Chavez, Franklin Gutierrez and Ichiro Suzuki in the same outfield is patently absurd, and will do wonders for guys like Jarrod Washburn whenever they're all out there at the same time.

As an aside, how weird is it that the Mets can trade, in consecutive offseasons, some of the best defensive outfielders in all of MLB, and still have Carlos Beltran lying around? The few times all three shared the outfield, extra base hits simply didn't happen.

As for the Indians, they didn't really give up all that much, and have, potentially, filled out their infield on the cheap.

Moving forward, with the price on Derek Loewe apparently reaching the stratosphere, the Mets better move quick on re-signing Oliver Perez. Flake or not, they need those innings.

[Edit: Also, nice trick by the Yankees, turning Melky Cabrera into Mike Cameron. Sure, it's a stopgap given his age, but it's nice to see the Yankees finally address their gaping hole in center field.]
Looks like the Yanks will probably get Burnett for 5-year/$80M. Much rather get Lowe. I wouldn't consider giving a guy like Burnett more than three years but such is the business.

Thank you Philadelphia management, for preventing Omar from signing Raúl Ibáñez. Why a 36 year old Ibáñez, at three years, $30 million, is preferable to an arbitration offer to Pat Burrell AND a first round draft pick is simply beyond me, but, as an early XMAS gift, how about a tribute to Ibáñez's defensive prowess:

They're gun shy after offering arbitration to Polanco a few years ago and having him take it. I think it was a good move -- I think Burrell's going to go for cheaper than people expect, and he might have accepted arbitration to make nice coin for a year and try the market again next year.

I think the real problem with the move is that Burrell might go for not much more than Ibanez. Also, holy lefties, Batman.
Thread Starter
I think they're about even offensively, and Ibáñez does keep himself in impressive shape for his age, but there still doesn't seem to be a gain here, you know? They're not picking up offense, defense, draft picks or money.

And damn, now the Mets need to re-sign Ollie, what with the Phillies stacking that many lefties.
Oh yeah, no gain at all. I'd prefer Burrell, especially since I bet he signs at a figure that's not wildly different from this one (per year). Maybe he gets more years, but I doubt it. I just don't see what team wants him, even after Manny signs.

But I think not offering arbitration was a wise move. They should have offered it to Moyer, though.
These signings are nuts. 16.5 million for Burnett is dumb and 20+ for Sabatia is worse when at best the Yankees have a 2 year window to win and even that's not guarenteed as they have 2 beasts in their division. I know the Yanks have money to burn but they should have learned there is a better way to go than high priced FA pitchers.

Glad Ibanez is gone as he'd look bad in Cubbie blue. Looking like crazy Milton Bradley for the Cubs in left.

And fuck the Cubs for not getting Peavy. If you can get a Cy Young winner for prospects you do it.

Worst signing has to be the Farnsworth to the Royals for 9.25 million for 2 years. I'm sure they have a farmhand that can throw fastballs over the plate for less.
