So long, Opus

This weekend is Berke Breathed's last Opus comic strip, and he's been saying that this is the final hurrah for the character. I don't think any of the later strips matched Bloom County's genius, but Breathed's art got better and better as the larger Sunday strips gave him room to work, and you could always tell he had such a genuine love for the medium.

Goddamn it. I can already tell I'm going to get choked up when I read it.

I hope it's as memorable as the last Outland strip where Opus finally reunites with his mom.

"Home. Mom. Goodbye."

So good.

Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to look for it. I think I have the last Outland clipped somewhere.

That old schematic of the Stealth Basselope was one of my favorite things ever when I saw it.

I've been reading Brethed's strips since Bloom County. He ranks up there with Bill Watterson and Gary Larson as one of the greatest comic artists of our time. I can only hope that someone publishes a complete collection similar to what was released for Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side.

This is one of my favorites.

Better to move on while the strip is at the top of its game than have it wind up like Funky Winkerbean or For Better or For Worse. And we'll always have Pearls Before Swine!

I feel somewhat responsible, having purchased Pete & Pickles and Mars Needs Moms!. In an NPR interview earlier this month he stated that he's going to focus on children's books.

I honestly didn't mind For Better or For Worse's finish...it was a bit dragged out...but it worked.

And Opus, we hardly knew ye since my crappy paper only picked it up like a year and a half ago. (And just started carrying pearls before swine this month).

...I hate local papers.

Bloom County was awesome. Outland kinda sucked.

Agreed. Bloom County is my favorite comic strip of all time, and I really liked both Outland and Opus, so this was a very bittersweet weekend for me. I couldn't be happier with this ending, though, and can only hope that now we get a big collection a la Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side for Mr. Breathed's amazing creation.

Outland only sucked in comparison to the glory that was Bloom County. I absolutely need a prestige, hardcover Bloom County collection, if only because my trade books are starting to disintegrate and I lost my Billy and the Boingers E.P. years ago.

I still have my E.P. You've gotta love Bill the Cat on lead tongue.

Going through my old stuff this weekend, I found my old 'Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Bill 'n Opus' t-shirt.

Sadly, Mr. Breathed's gone on record to say that he has no plans to put out a fancy collection of Bloom County, and that he's perfectly happy with the books being sold and traded second-hand.

I'm fairly certain it was in an interview with Salon.
