King of the Hill Canceled..

Link here, I didn't think it was that big of a deal to submit.

However, in honor of the occasion, I think we should acknowledge Mike Judge as one of the best satirists of the American middle class for the last 20 years. Thanks, Mike.

Well, he had a hell of a run with it. I don't think anyone thought the show would go 13 seasons.
I'm surprised it lasted this long.

I like the show well enough, but never understood why it was worthy of being animated(other than it being less expensive).

I'm stunned the show lasted this long. I'm just taking the opportunity to show appreciation for Judge's body of work.

I love King of the Hill, and watch the repeats almost every day, but I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a new episode. I think it's a highly underrated show.
It's amazing how much fresh material they were able to mine out of a simple setup.

I didn't realize animation was something to be earned. It's animated because that's the medium that Judge chose for it, and it works wonderfully.

Such a great show. It's never received the attention it truly deserves. My wife and I still quote Bobby from the episode in which Peggy is conned into starring in amateur foot fetish porn: "Who? Who in the media fooled you?"

I always liked the Peggy-as-outsider-artist episode. "Hey, you make guys, too? I make guys. Don't copy my guys!"
peggysfeet.com was one of the funnier episodes. Good call, Mattioli.

I worked with a bunch of guys from Texas about a year back on a job putting up conveyers in a B&N warehouse. They LOVED King of the Hill. In fact, I think that was the only show they watched....ever. Gotta say though, I went back and watched it after working with those guys and I did get a lot more of the "Southern humor" in the show.
I always found this show to be a great balance between the un-even ness of The Simpsons and Family Guy. KOH was always the level headed middle child.

But I think it went on maybe 2-3 seasons too long as it has started to decline a bit.
Never cared for it, won't miss it at all.

I shouldn't have used the term "worthy".

I tend to think animation is best when used for things that can't be easily done in live-action. It works, but would have worked just as well with actors.

I don't think it would, actually. A lot of the humor is pretty broad, and it would be hard to find kids who deliver comedic lines as well as the voice actors who do Bobby and the others. Dale and Boomhauer wouldn't work nearly as well in live action, either.

Another pearl of KOTH wisdom (said by Hank at a Christian rock festival): "Can't you see you're not making Christianity better? You're just making rock'n'roll worse." It comes to mind every time I pass the Sunday night youth group/Christian pop/rock meeting that happens at the church down the street.
Such an underrated show. I actually thought it was more family drama than actually laugh out loud funny. Although it was funny.

That's one of me and my wife's favorite quotes. So true.
Much like ER. I used to watch this show regularly and just dropped out of years ago.

Personal favorite. Phil Hendrie as Coach Sauers.

"YA GONNA EAT MUD!" and "Take a salt tablet."

Oh and I agree as to Hank's view on Christian Rock that and Dale going as Washington Lobbyist for Halloween.
I never watched it regularly, but I never failed to laugh when I did catch an episode. Bobby is a great character, especially in the self-defense episode. "That's my purse! (kick to the balls) I DON'T KNOW YOU!"
I remember that episode. Bobby then kicked his mom in the crotch only to have Peggy smirk and say "Ladies do not have testicles" only for Bobby to react in horror.

Now I admit ladies. Wouldn't getting kicked down there still hurt? I mean it's not like you dangly parts down there. But that is still sensative material.
My first reaction was sadness, but this show has definitely said all it needed to say. Like many of you, couldn't tell you the last time I caught a new episode, I usually just watch the reruns on FX.

That being said, I was just remarking to a friend the other day that this show has remained really quite good, it's so well written but quiet, it's often overlooked.

Have a few favorites, the episode where Bobby gets a job at the race track, under the tutelage of Jimmy Whichard, who demands that Bobby cross the busy track to bring him a soda. Hank is not pleased.

Love a lot of the side characters, like Joe Jack and Mr. Strickland. Never fails to crack me up when Joe Jack calls somebody Hon, or Honey.

Holy Hell, Yes! That's another frequently repeated line.
I remember an episode from a couple of years ago that had Luanne and the Tom Petty character getting married; during the ceremony, it seems that every single character that had ever been on the show was in attendance.

That always seemed like it was supposed to be the last episode.

But, if we are naming great KOTH moments, how could anyone leave out when Hank had to get saline butt cheeks in order to combat his Diminished Glutes Syndrome?
I just watched that episode yesterday! King of the Hill has been one of my favorite shows for quite awhile now, even though I agree with you guys that the last few seasons were a little sub par. I think the time is right to end the show, it went alot longer than I ever thought it would, and I think they've done everything they can with the characters.

But it is worth repeating- such an underrated show! I think part of the reason it never got the following Simpson's or Family Guy did was due to the extremely dry and subtle humor for one, but also you kind of had to watch the show and get to know the characters fairly well for alot of the material to work.

Some of my favorites- Hank, Kahn and their families go down to Mexico and eventually have to try to smuggle Kahn across the border in the trunk of a rental car.
Hank takes his mother and a few friends to "Miniature Island".
Hank goes blind when he sees his mother and her boyfriend "in the throes of activity".

King of the Hill is also a textbook example on how to properly and expertly use guest celebrity voices.

Personal favorite: Brad Pitt as Boomhauer's just-as-incomprehensible brother. That was George-Clooney-as-Stan's-gay-dog level of obscurity and I loved it.

Favorite quotes:

"Dale, you look pretty upset for someone who just walked into a propane store."

"You were on my list of trustables! And it was a very short list! I wasn't even on it!"

"I got this note from Jesus saying you suck at beauty school, only he said it much nicer. Where is it...ah here it is...'Dear Luanne: You really suck at beauty school. Love Jesus.' Huh. Guess he didn't put it nicer. Even underlined 'really'."

I have to believe that Buck Strickland was based off of LBJ. The man conducted business while on the toliet! Also, Burt Reynolds as the evil crosstown Propane salesman Thatherton.

I always felt the same way.

Favorite mini-carachter was Monsignor Martinez "Via Con Dios" and Octavio; Dale's henchmen.

I still occasionally quote Dale from the very first episode:

"You don't know who I am...but I know where you live, sex-ed teacher..."
This is one of my favorite Dale quotes.

"I've recently learned to sleep with my eyes open... God am I tired"
I really liked this show. One of my favorite recurring characters is Khan's nemesis Ted Wassanasong. Oh and of course John Red-Corn. My sister and I can crack each other up just by saying Big Mountain Fudgecake. Hank was such a glorious square and I loved any moment where he dropped his guard and let the fun side show. Peggy's disasterous birthday being an example. Another great episode was one last year where they killed off Cotton Hill. I loved Cotton and was oddly touched at that episode. I also like how Joseph has been gradually growing in to a degenerate. Ah well, farther along I suppose.
My favorite episode is the one where Hank wins the Superbowl throw and the whole family goes down and meets Bill's family. Gilbert was a great character.

"I'm more familiar with sinners than saints, and sinners always look good." Hank's reaction was great.

Yea I always got the impression he was based on LBJ too. There was a picture of him in his office holding one of his hounds up by the ears, just like the infamous pic of Johnson. There are a few more little clues scattered throughout the series- Mr. Strickland doesn't like JFK, that, and he looks just like him.

The episode memory for me is when Bobby learns to become a ventriloquist, and he performs in the living room, leading to the following exchange:

Bill: (amazed when Bobby throws his voice) How do you do that Bobby?
Hank: (proudly) He's using show business.
The worst one was The Propaniacs. Wow, that blew.

Saw the one today where Bobby goes to a college class on clowning. Another favorite is when they go to Japan and Hank meets his half-brother.

One of my favorite Hank quotes "Look here, I'm NOT A Hollywood jackass and I am NOT a small-town redneck. I'm..I'm..I'M COMPLICATED"

So many great episodes. And this show does do the best celebrity guest stars, like when Michael Keaton played an insane pork baron.

They seemed to stop releasing dvds after season 7

Long live Dale.

Same here. I love all of Judge's other work, but King of the Hill was blander than bland.
I respected the show more than I actually watched it. Understated/written comedy doesn't always fly with me, I noticed, but unlike most examples of the style, the show often elicits several small chuckles from me over the course of an episode, the bigger ones usually from Dale and Boomhauer.

Maybe it's just a Texas thing, but I have always been able to understand Boomhauer. I know people who actually talk like that.

I'll always love Hank admonishing Bobby's report card: "A 'D' in English? Bobby, you SPEAK it."

So true. Two favorites off the top of my head were Johnny Depp's yoga instructor and Snoop Dogg as a white pimp.
This is easily one of my favorite shows, but I never watch the new episodes. As long as they continue to play reruns on FX I'll be fine.

I have to say though that I find Peggy to be one of the most irritating characters in all of television. Her superiority complex coupled with her stone cold idiocy just really gets on my nerves. But then she frequently gets humiliated and embarrassed, so it all kind of evens out I guess.
I have to echo the love for this show. The humor is so mundane and subtle it turned a lot of people off, but I laughed out loud more during a few episodes of King of the Hill than I have through the last ten seasons of The Simpsons.

Hey! Family Guy is the cutting edge of television comedy. Every mouth-breather says so.

Was a bit surprised by this news when I first saw it, but was even more surprised when I read that this was the 13th season.

Even though I haven't been an loyal viewer, it's still set to record on my DVR even during this final season.

I've held onto my Hank Hill Halloween mask for many years and still do a mean impersonation of the character.

Just wondering, because usually people who like the quick, random comedy of Family Guy aren't going to appreciate King of the Hill.
My favorite King of the Hill scene is when Dale is bragging to his wife about playing Russian Roulette, and she asks Dale if he wins.

"I assume you are not familiar with the game."
"No"
*macho deep breath* "Yeah. I won."
