Santa Barbara Chewers - any out there?

Hey guys.

I'm interviewing for a job out there next week, the problem is that I don't live there, and I do not plan on being able to sell my house and move my family in these crappy times.

My question is whether there are any places that I can get something cheap to live in during the week and then go home on the weekends. Somewhere cheap where I will hopefully not be robbed or killed. This is based on the off chance that they even want to hire me.

Any suggestions would help.

Santa Barbara is really really expensive (my grandparents have a house up there that's valued somewhere in the millions now). You're best bet is looking for a place around Isla Vista (if you don't mind being surrounded by drunk college kids all the time), but it's still going to run you a good amount for a one bedroom apartment.

Thanks for the tip. That seems to be what I am finding, crap like $600 for a room with a roommate in it.

I need the work like nobody's business, but it's looking like it's going to be tough finding something.

What Fafhrd said. I love the place, but goddamn if it isn't almost as expensive (if not more so) as L.A.. I think your best bet might be sharing a place, especially if you need the work/money.

Can you commute from outskirts of Ventura or someplace in north LA? I'm not sure where you live now....

You might be able to rent out your home and move your family to Santa Barbara as another option.

Best of luck.

Any cheap housing in going to be in either Ventura or north county, you are looking at about a 30 or 40 minute drive from down town either way. That 30 or 40 minutes at 80+ by north county I mean Lompok or Solvang. I have done down town to Santa Maria in about 35 minutes once or twice, but that going over the 154 through Cachuma at about 90 if you don't mind deadly land slides you can see what homes in La Conchita go for these days.
