Anyone used this yet? Service that is still in beta, but already very promising. They're focused on offering acclaimed PC games of years past, patched and updated to work in XP and Vista. No DRM, most games are $5.99.

The sales pitch right now is that the site carries all three previous FALLOUT games (1, 2 and Tactics) but there are some other good tidbits in there, like a lot of Shiny's pre-Matrix output. For the price of a jack and coke, why not?

Yep, I got beta access a couple of weeks ago and downloaded Freespace. Very clean and easy installation, also comes with the electronic manual, reference card and some extra e-swag (desktops and screenshots, I think).

On Windows XP, it installed and ran without a hitch, although I had an issue where the joystick seemed permanently stuck in rotation. But I'm almost certain that's a problem with the gamepad and the game rather than XP.

I've also had a GameTap account for years, so I doubt I'll use GOG very much for now--there doesn't seem to be anything notable on it that isn't already on GameTap--but if you're looking for permanent, DRM-free, hassle-free old-school PC gaming, it does seem to work as advertised.

I downloaded Giants: Citizen Kabuto from them a few weeks ago, mostly because the retail version of that game didn't work in XP/Vista. I don't know what kind of process they used to get the compatibility in order, but it's kind of piss-poor.

So long as you're getting a game that required minimal patching on GOG's behalf, I'm sure you'll be fine. Like Count Floyd said, the installer is painless and the extras are nice to have.

Didn't Shiny do Messiah? Was that game as good as I remember?

I never finished Messiah (yeah, that was Shiny) but I liked it at the time. My copy always locked up in the same place, so I could never progress and I lost the urge to start from the beginning. I kinda want to grab it and try again.

There was a lot of lag in various parts of the game, almost to the point of making it unplayable. I tried it on two different computers, so I don't think it was an isolated problem. There's really only so much you can do in trying to fix OS compatibility, so I can't blame them.

If it's Fallout you're interested in, then I wouldn't see any reason to worry, as those games run fine on XP (not sure about Vista). The only real problem is that the overworld maps in Fallout and Fallout 2 run way too fast on modern processors, but that's easily patched.

ETA: I don't know if you've played Sacrifice, but I definitely preferred that over Messiah (I got them both in a $5 jewel case package years ago). It's a unique mix of action/RTS elements, really fun.

Never was a big PC gamer, and I'm sure most of the games I played back in the day (Mechwarrior, Journeyman Project) have aged horribly.

And yet the Freespace games remain COMPLETELY AWESOME.

Jack and cokes cost 6 bucks? Fuck, I need to live somewhere else.

And I agree with the sentiment regarding Freespace. Too good.

Oh man, Descent 1 AND 2? Fuck yeah. Wish I had a PC.
