Moratorium on drafts

Thread Starter
This should have been posted after the last draft and my apologies for not creating this thread sooner.

Unless Nick says otherwise, we are going to give drafts a breather for the rest of the year.

Red Rock West (1992)

Any particular reason why? If people are enjoying them, I don't see the problem.

Personally, I want to participate but I can't do one every other week. Which means if you guys do, I miss out. And the way you've all been going, by the time I can play, you'll have hit all the themes I'd be interested in joining in on.

But why is Nick banning drafts?
I'd like to draft the following for my Supergroup...

Vocals: Eric Burdon
Backup Vocals: Lou Barlow
Rhythm Guitar: Johnny Ramone
Lead Guitar: Dean Deleo
Bass: David Wm. Sims
Drums: Dave Grohl

What's next, Nick? Are you going to make dancing illegal? Is this the tiny town from Footloose?
Dammit! I wanted to organize a draft's draft, where you picked previous drafts.

Fail Draft (2008) - Dir. Martin Savage.

The way I read the first post, Eileen is putting them on hold, not Nick.

Save that for my Rock Band draft, hopefully starting up in January. I PMd Nick and Eileen on this draft last week and was told to hold off until then.

That'd be on kick-ass band, though.

Why is Eileen banning drafts?
I just don't see the big deal in letting them continue. Yes, some people may not be able to participate, but since when has that stopped previous drafts from going forward? It's Chewer-generated content that doesn't take away from anything at all, and are honestly more fun than the endless threads debating who the hell Fleed is.

Those threads stop when we get a picture.
To me drafts are a device to spark conversation. My film chatter leans toward the evangelical, and the drafts let us talk film with people who hadn't seen the films, in a way that got them interested in seeing more films. There was more excited film talk in that last draft than I'd seen on the board in a while. That's a problem with the boards, not the drafts.

Not that anyone asked.

Or the hundreds and hundreds of political threads.

Regardless, I was told by Eileen to hold off on doing my Rock Band draft until January. As it's not my site, I will respect those wishes unless I hear otherwise.

Because she's a socialist.

There's only so many themes you can do. And it sucks that just a handful of people are doing all of them. When if CHUD did a draft every 6 mos or so, more people could participate.
I don't follow that logic, Diva. I think the handful of people participating is a factor of the subject matter, not the ability to participate.
I'd like to see a Fleed draft. His best posts. Or best uses of ellipses.
The last CHUD official draft was worse than the user-run ones.
The site gave ZERO support and less people participated.

So that excuse is no longer valid.

That's not true, though. If I recall correctly, Nick's drafts barred people who didn't have something like 2,000 posts. At least these drafts are a little bit more egalatarian.

Bingo. The last Horror draft made made me watch a lot of movies that I forgot or didn't know. 12 total. It alone did more for movie-related conversation more than any thread I've seen in a long while. It's pretty rare now, and the only part of the boards that's bustling with activity is the political threads.

From what I've seen, there's always at least one Chewer who wants to participate in a particular draft but can't because of a schedule/timing conflict.

Was that the actor draft, where 4 or 5 rounds were posted out of the 7?
So could someone explain to me what the purpose of the drafts are and how they work? I kept seeing the threads but had no idea how to participate since the OP just said, "OK, here's a draft. Start signing up."

A little help please?
The argument that Chewer drafts take away from CHUD drafts is purely academic because Nick/CHUD don't post regular drafts.
When was the last one? A year ago?
We had the Rep Company draft earlier this year. A Babe draft was announced, signed up for, and even had an order posted, then was postponed and has yet to occur.
Did the Repertory Draft do well? Is that the actor draft everyone's talkin' 'bout?

Yeah. The site was to post our comments on our picks, as a full-site support to it, and yet it stopped in the middle. No clue why.

A Draft theme is selected. For example, we just had a Horror Movie draft.

The creator of the draft sets up rules and determines how many rounds the draft will encompass. Using the Horror Draft as an example: each round, drafters will pick a movie that fits the Horror Movie genre in the hopes of completing a themed draft. The fun comes from:

-competing with other Chewers from the same pool of movies.
-trying to complete your individual theme.
-trying to guess the other themes before the final round.
-discovering movies that you haven't seen or heard of before.

That's essentially it.

Oh right. No offense, but that Rep Draft was kind of retarded. It was more like some kind of fan-fic exercise than an actual draft with film discussion.
Banning user drafts is hysterically dumb. It doesn't take away from the main page, as most main page viewers don't view the boards, it adds page views and doesn't get in the way of the other board discussions.

Nick doesn't want an official draft until next year, fine, but 12 -15 people on the boards having a focused discussion about something other than what relationship trauma they are currently experiencing is something to be encouraged.
The fun of the horror draft was exposing people to films they hadn't heard of, and learning about films I hadn't heard of. The second most fun was arguing over whether films were actually horror. (epilogue: Exhumed Films' 24 Hour Horror Marathon included The Incredible Shrinking Man, so FUCK YOU ALL!!)
The horror draft was also fun when I picked FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, then Phil called me stupid, then I told him to go take a bath with a hair dryer.
The Horror Draft was a blast. Because of that draft, I've given seven movies (so far) a try that I wouldn't have otherwise.
I'm not exactly excited to do another draft, but banning them is kinda dumb, especially after the Horror draft introduced me to Bava.
This "moratorium" smacks of the site's operators being pissed that someone else is playing with their toys. So, they're taking their toys and going home. It's weak.

And I say this as someone who participated in the Horror Draft and had a blast, but is in no rush to participate in another draft.

And then someone called me a dick and I was all 'wtf im just playin waaah'

So if someone starts a draft, does the thread get locked?

And then Crow got all kinds of mad because I didn't draft both Gremlins movies and I was all like, "If you like 'The New Batch' so much, YOU draft it!" You guys remember that? That was awesome.
It's because of Martin Savage and the FAIL draft that we have all been exposed to the sheer grandeur that is 'Turkish Star Wars'. I think that we're all better human beings because of that little fact.
The Horror Movie Draft really benefitted from taking place in October. A high level of interest, a lot of titles available for sale, and a ton of people interested in more than the last 10 years. Tati selling himself down the river for his theme was also a highlight. I think we got people to watch Eyes Without a Face as well, which makes it all worthwhile, IMO.

I can understand not wanting one every week. But, you don't have to participate. I've chosen not to on occasion because of work, etc. and there's no guarantee that I'll have the time whenever the next big one comes off. I'm not going to rearrange my schedule for a draft.
This whole "it makes us talk about movies!" argument would be much stronger if a video game and supergroup draft weren't the next two proposed drafts. Just sayin'.
Heaven forbid we talk about video games or musicians. Just sayin'.
It makes people talk about things covered on the site. I don't get how it can be viewed as a burden.
