And it kinda sucks.
On election day??? That's a big kick in the balls.
We can't grow the pie by giving pink slips to the ingredients. Or something like that.
Where did you work?
McCain campaign.

Sorry to hear that. Good luck.
Sorry to hear it, Tom. Hope you find a new and better gig pronto.
It's tough all over. Most companies have been having the "tightening the belt" meetings lately. Condolences.
Sorry to hear it. Did they offer any severance at all or was it just a shove out the door?
Condolences.
Motherfuck. As someone who dealt with a month of being unemployed. I can not emphasize just how much I feel you pain and anxiety. I really really do.
Ack. Sorry to hear it.
Martianman, Sorry to hear about you being out of work. Hopefully you will find something soon.
May your term of unemployment be short, and may your new job be more fulfilling and profitable than the one that you just left.
Condolences, MM. On a purely selfish note, I hope this means we'll be hearing from you a bit more in the near future.
Condolences man. I was out of work for 3 months (with a month of severance, and some back commission coming in, but regardless). Hang in there, and think outside the box, if possible.
That sucks, man. Good luck.
Oh crap, sorry to hear it Tom. Hope new work comes your way soon.
Sorry to hear about that as well. I am certain something good will come up soon.
Shit man, that sucks. But, there is always another job, trust me on that.

Aah...the holiday season, the time to have dinners and buy gifts for friends and family using the money you no longer have, because everyone fucking cuts jobs at this time.

Thanks for the thoughts. Got severance through the end of November. I don't burn bridges, but I told the HR rep my feeling at the moment was of disgust. I worked for a consulting company, trying to help build a line of service practice new to them. We've burned through 2-3 leads for that line of service, and they just fired the overall branch manager after about a year, and apparently he left the branch in worse shape than he found it. So myself, and 4-5 other folks that weren't on current contracts all got "separated" from the company (that was the term instead of "fired").

But, as they say, when one door closes, another opens. Right? Right? Please tell me I'm right.

Depends on what industry you are in and what you do.

I shave fancy designs into dog's fur for weddings and other celebrations. There is a market for that still, right?
Hopefully it won't be necessary, but don't be too proud to sign up for unemployment once your severance runs out. It got me by for a couple of months when I got laid off a few years ago.

Dude, that's the first thing I'm doing tomorrow--going to the Labor office and filing the paper work. Obama will pay my mortgage and fill up my car with gas!

EDIT: That last part is a joke. Please don't turn this into a political thread.

Actually, you paid for that.

Well, yeah, but I also get excited when I get a tax refund, even though it's my money anyway. Don't harsh my mellow, dude.
If it makes you feel any better, it can make your former employers unemployment insurance rates go up. I know it made me feel better. Seriously though, no shame in collecting your own money.
Sorry to hear this brother. Hang in there. Update this thread from time to time and let us know how your job search is going.

Sorry to hear that. I was unemployed for 4.5 months last year and it sucked balls.

Some resources to try:

Craigslist: not sure how it is where you are, but in CA it lists a lot of quality jobs

LinkedIn: advertises jobs of "100K and above only" and that includes consulting gigs
Check out www.linkedin.com
(It does require an annual fee but it's not much)

I recommend you DON'T post a resume on Monster or CareeBuilder. You"ll have every asshole in the world offering shit jobs.

Good luck!

Sorry.

Look on the bright side. Obama will get you a job.
That sucks Mm, hopefully you'll be able to land on your feet, and find new work sooner rather than later.

Things at my work are getting pretty... one word would be interesting, another would be horrendous, but that's more an owner class vs working class thing.
Hope you get back on your feet soon, Martianman. Plenty of jobs out there, so hopefully you'll snag one soon.
Fuck'em, MartianMan, their loss. And Cylon Baby's right: try LinkedIn. Works pretty well apparently. In any case, good luck on your sure-to be-profitable quest.

Oh, yeah, that's what we always say in prison. Just don''t take these "new doors" in the literal sense.
Good luck, MM. Hey, you were looking when you found your last job, right? Might be a little bit tough for a bit but you'll be okay.

Remember to market the hell out of yourself and update us on your progress.
Good luck, Tom. Find me on LinkedIn, if we're not already connected there.

And 3+ months later...I'm finally employed again! I start Monday on a contract-to-perm job, with the perm appropriately coming on April 1st. Hopefully they won't take that moment to mess with me, because that would suck. Thanks for all the well wishes and help offered by everyone. Now waiting for that first paycheck will seem like forever.
Congrats! I hope that it ends up being a job that you like and not just a 'grit your teeth and bear it for the paycheck' kind of gig; I have alot of friends that are stuck in that second category right now.
That's awesome news, man.

Now the countdown to me being unemployed in 3....2....1.....

is that Christmas picture from Mr. Fabulous finally catching up with you?

Those mammoth yet festive breasts have slowly deteriorated my job, yes.

Wait, what?
In the Merry Christmas thread, Mr. Fabulous posted a VERY NSFW picture of a large breasted Christmas...thing. I thankfully didn't page up to see it, as I received warnings from several other Chewers, including Swice.

All kidding aside, it was a very shitty thing to do by Mr. Fabulous.

eta: in the thread, Swice made a point of thanking Fab for getting him fired for Christmas.
Awesome news Tom! Congrats on landing a new gig.

Incidentally, how did you find the new position?
If it helps anyone, the US Census Bureau is hiring folks to help with the 2010 Census. I don't know how the pay is for each state, but a friend of mine in college who needed a part-time job just got hired by them. Flexible hours and they pay him $14 an hour. Here's the website if you're interested: http://2010.census.gov/2010censusjobs/

Fantastic news, glad things worked out Tom. Now stop reading about our #6 class on NSD and get back to prepping for work!

I had started talking to a recruiter about them last July/August. Then when the economic downturn majorly hit in the Fall, they held up the position. I ran into some folks from the company itself at a user's group meeting about 2-3 weeks ago. They remembered me, and I got the call on Monday this week that it was back up again, and now I start on Monday.

Man, you're reading my mind. Nice close, considering I think they were ranked like 21st before signing day.
