Shows you gave up on... - Page 2

I like Season 1 and 4 of LOST. But I've always had trouble with the premise of the show. That all the passengers are just miraculously linked to each other in a particular way (e.g Sayid knowing Kate's foster father).

No explanation (I believe) has ever been satisfactorily given. Besides a rather nebulous "The Island won't let you". With the exception of Jack, I liked most of the characters enough. But all the flashbacks and secret connections were a little hard to swallow.

I liked the Season 1 setting better. There was a real sense of mystery about. But then suddenly we got "The Others" and the "Dharma Foundation". Seemed like a bit of a stretch for me.

And what about "The Hatch" and "The Button"? Seemed like instead of pressing the numbers over and over for years. Desmond could have simply pressed the override button long ago.

Did the world end? Apparently not.
There's still a huge sense of mystery. Why are all these people linked together?
The number of questions is staggering, and they did answer some, but it's not a show for people who likes everything explained to them right away.
The thing is...I don't think there is a satisfactory answer. The writers are just stringing us along. They thought it was cool that all these characters are "connected" together and wrote themselves into a corner.

I have no trouble waiting for answers. I just think that an "acceptable" answer is not forthcoming and that just stinks up my entire perception of the whole shabang.

We started off with a simple mystery of a plane crash and a jungle. Now we got Time-travel, mysterious organizations, ghosts and zombies.

See what I mean?
There's 2 seasons left. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt until the last episode. I'd rather have a show that challenges me than one like CSI.
I am sticking by LOST. I'll be watching it though I doubt I'll ever "Love" it.

There's a little Canadian show called THE COLLECTOR that I recommend.
Its a vastly more serious version of REAPER, concerning issues of faith and The Devil. Most of the stories are downbeat with The Devil winning.

"Morgan Pym is a collector of souls damned by their deal with the Devil. He was a fourteenth-century German monk who fell in love with a woman named Katrina, breaking his vows. She began to show symptoms of the plague, and Morgan sold his soul for ten years of life with the woman he loved. In return for being spared from Hell, he becomes the first collector. More recently, the Devil agreed to allow him to seek redemption for his clients."
The Collector? From what I've seen, it makes the average Sci-Fi channel show look like Battlestar Galactica... It plays over here as we have to air a certain amount of local productions, and it's not all pristine...
They touched on some very interesting topics. Like Hinduism and other religions. And how The Devil is perceived by them.

The acting and production values are pretty bad though.
I almost gave up on 'Lost' in Season 3. When they announced that they were committing to a 6 season story arc, I decided to stick with it. I'm glad that I did, as the show seemed to find its way again in Season 4 and become more focused on driving towards an actual endgame.

I'm really close to dropping 'House'. This will probably be my last season of watching it.
I dropped House the moment season 3 got going and I realized it wasn't ever trying to go anywhere. I'm not a great tune in to see Hugh Laurie being funny kinda guy.
A few others came to mind for me...

Survivor - Used to be a reality-TV crack-whore. But when they started doing the "Let's divide everyone by their race and even further play up sterotypes," I turned it off for good and haven't been back since.

The Simpsons - Nuff said.

House - Last season's finale was just so fucking solid that I knew I wouldn't believe any excuse for House & Wilson to kiss and make-up this season. So I basically avoided watching the premiere, and now all the stuff about House/Cuddy possibly hooking up makes me think I made the right move.

Although I'm not 100% there (yet), a few more shitty episodes of Family Guy and I'm done with it too.
I used to be into 'Survivor' and 'the Amazing Race' as well. I dropped each of those after about 5 seasons; you can only watch the same thing (albeit with different people) so many times before you have to move on.
I think that BSG is an incredibly strong show, and I respect it immensely, how it subverted the source material and its political allegory. It's a remarkable achievement.

But I found myself feeling obligated to watch it rather than looking forward like I anticipate the next episode of The Wire or Buffy or Angel. I was not captivated by the story being told. After the initial shock of the human race being driven near extinction, by the end of the first season, I just wasn't caring as much as I wanted to--maybe it was some of the less-than-stellar performances from some of the actors or my complete disinterest in the surviving pilot on Caprica. My girlfriend watched the season one finale without me, and I never bothered to catch up.

It's like Sonic Youth. I think they're an incredible band, I understand why the get all the accolades they have, I acknowledge all the ground they broke. But it doesn't change the fact that Daydream Nation sat on my CD shelf for three years without a repeat listen before I decided to man up and admit it just didn't resonate with me. Same with BSG. Now that I'm getting older, forcing yourself to watch something because you should just doesn't appeal to me anymore. I can appreciate excellence without feeling threatened when I don't choose to watch it.
Yeah, I forgot Family Guy. Used to watch every single episode, but since it's return a few years ago, it's shitty as hell.
The thing with BSG was that I started to get the feeling, somewhere mid-way through season 3, that this thing was just getting dragged out too long and that it was actually getting kind of annoying. Then they pulled the "Final Five" out of their ass, like they just picked names out of a hat and said "Those are the final five," with no worry about it making sense. The straw that broke the camels back was getting into Deadwood. I just stopped watching BSG after that. I've been meaning to catch up, but the urge to watch it hasn't really struck me, and I don't know if I'll ever go back and finish.

Same with me and The Wire. And Dexter. And revisiting Buffy/Angel with a new girlfriend (I don't have the stamina to watch every ep again, but I do rewatch the ones I loved.)
I gave up on Heroes after the season one finale but I still watch it. does that count? I need something to bitch about.
Prison Break (as of this season)
Nip / Tuck (as of last season)
The First 48 (fascinating at first, but once you have seen one, you have seen them all)
About to ditch Rescue Me (unless it recovers)

I'm also THIS close to dropping Boston Legal. The only reason i haven't is because it's supposed to be the final season and i want to know if they go anywhere with it. Advancing the story for once, about Denny's sickness, and Alan getting fired or making partner.

I'm already having visions of the final scene from next month's series finale...

Denny lying in bed hooked up to his ass on life-support. Alan walks in.

Denny: What happened?

Alan: *whispering in his ear* Obama.

Denny: Denny Crane!

Denny flat-lines. FADE TO BLACK.

Nip / Tuck after the awful wrap-up to the Carver storyline.

Rescue Me after season 3

24 is THIS close to being dropped after last season.

I caught up with House on DVD before this season started...Now, I no longer care.

I just finished watching the first season of Californication. Holy crap, what an awful way to end the season. My wife likes the show, but I can't stand it so far. However, I've heard the second season has been better.
I've just started season one of The Wire. I like knowing how much of a show there is and also that, by all accounts, its keeps getting better.
Amazing Race, as of three seasons ago.
Dancing with the Stars, two seasons ago.
The Shield, two seasons ago.
CSI-Miami, two seasons ago.
Top Chef, as of the finale last season.
The Biggest Loser, two seasons ago.

Be sure to track your progress in the Wire virgin thread (there's spoilers, but we're careful when a newbie shows up. It really does just get better and better for an absurdly long time.

You're nuts, that's right when they really hit their peak.

Am I the only person that still likes Nip/Tuck?

The part where Sean's girlfriend took a shit in his hot tub was one of the funniest moments in TV history.

This whole list reeks of horrible taste. Why the hell did you even waste your time with these shows (outside of The Shield, the question for that would be why'd you stop? Especially if you watched S5...no sense) in the first place? Don't tell me you thought they'd be good.

Or were you sincerely disappointed when The Biggest Loser didn't go in the direction you wanted it to?
I'll cop to watching The Biggest Loser occasionally. But I'm not equating it to a show I'll watch every week to the point where I "give up on it".

I agree. Hilarious stuff. That's why I keep watching. Any hope of it being a "quality" show like in the first couple seasons are gone. But Walsh and McMahon are still fun to follow and I still watch it just to see how absurd it can get.

Remember the guy who got stuffed like a teddy bear last season? No way do I want to miss out on seeing insane crap like that.
Anytime I watched a few minutes of The Biggest Loser I'd always lose my appetite...even if I hadn't eaten all day!
I hopped off the House bus two seasons ago without really thinking about it.
Smallville and Californication were also 1st season executions. I stopped watching Oz in the middle of the 4th season, and regrettably returned for the last.
God yeah, I actually kept on watching Smallville for two seasons. Or at least, till the one that ends with Lex stranded on an island. At that point, I realized they didn't want this to ever become a superhero show, just a Dawson's Creek with some occasional CGI.

Prison Break I kept on following for the entirety of season 1 because I was just curious how the hell they were gonna break out. When season 2 came around, I kind of routinely started watching them, but then I realised after two episodes or so that I really didn't give a shit about anyone.

Heroes I watched till the end of season 1 to find out what the hell it was all leading up to. After that extreme anticlimax, coupled with the fact that I actively disliked most characters, I decided not to continue.

That was great! But my favourite unanswered aspect to last season was that old man who came to them claiming to have been abducted by aliens, which they never bought into, but in a twist ending he turned out to have been telling the truth, and he is kidnapped by a top secret government Black Ops squad!

This implies that aliens exist in the continuity of Nip/Tuck. I will keep watching it.

Nip/Tuck is the funniest show on TV. And, crucially, it knows it.
That alien-abducted old guy story was a good moment in what was already a ludicrous season.

But I feel the real reason I keep watching is for Christian's son Wilbur. So precious. So reprehensibly neglected.

Reaper. And dropping it felt like I was putting down a very heavy burden.

Denny voted for Obama. I still love that show. It's so over the top and rediclious. I love it.

And really I've only given up on nip/tuck and Terminator.

My roomates love Heroes so I always get sucked into watching it.

That show had a massive dip in quality, got retooled and had half a season where it was surprisingly good. It's worth tracking down the last few episodes.
Anyone still watching HEROES should be ashamed of themselves. That show was never good.
I dropped Heroes half way into season 1 when I realized I started reading books as I was watching. I think it was during an episode where Sylar nailed someone to the ceiling or whatever.

I'm going to show my age here but the biggest one for me was dropping Moonlighting. After David got with Maddie I only lasted a few episodes. The irony is that I was completely nuts about it happening. I still cannot stand Mark Harmon.
'Moonlighting' became pretty much unwatchable after that point.

Also showing my age:
'Soap', shortly after the whole Alien Burt Campbell story arc. Up until that point, the quality had remained solid and the stories were (somewhat) grounded in reality. It started to run out of steam after this point.
'Dallas', after it was revealed that a whole season was nothing but Pamela's dream.

Also important. The Colbert Report. I love Stephen Colbert, but i can only take him in small doses.

When is Reaper coming back btw?
I gave up on The X-Files when I started missing episodes and losing track of the mythology. Whenever I did tune in thereafter, it would usually be a quirky episode like "Triangle" or "Bad Blood" or "The Post-Modern Prometheus" which, while well-written in their own right, were all over the map. Now I'm enjoying poring through all nine seasons on DVD, but episodes like these still make the show feel frustratingly disjointed.

Last I had read was that it's a mid-season replacement, which should put its season 2 debut around January.
I gave up on Heroes after Season 2. I watched Season 1 and enjoyed it for the most part, but I was aware of its weaknesses even then, they just didn't bother me. Season 1 went out with a whimper though and I should have known better, but I stuck with Season 2, watching it mostly because it felt like I HAD to, if that makes any sense. It became more of a chore than anything though and it scrambled my brain and gave me nosebleeds. Thanks heavens Journeyman was on after, but wait... that didn't last too long (WTF NBC?!?!?) I haven't even bothered with a single episode of Season 3...

You guys make me want to re-consider dropping Nip/Tuck from my Netflix list.

John from Cincinnati. Made it through I think 4 episodes. Fuck that show.

I find that hard to believe considering how much they've set that character up since early '04 as a hard-ass Republican. Meh. It's definitely one of those shows I'll catch every so often, but never fully committed to.

Kinda surprised they never got Nimoy as a guest-star...

He did vote for Obama. The entire episode was basically about the election and an Anti McCain spot.

No, I believe you - what I mean is it's just hard to accept considering how they've set up that character. It'd be like House suddenly believing in an after-life (i.e. that brillantly cold "Fuck you!" ending from last season!)
Heroes, Six Feet Under, E.R. and Tim & Eric are the first ones that come to mind.

They all became tedious beyond belief.
I tried to finish the first season of 24 (I only watch TV on DVD and tend to binge) and could not. I do not see what people like about that show. It is overwrought, not fun, and Jack Bauer is lame.
