The Official 'I Hate Winter' Thread, 2008-2009

After a gorgeous Fall season, Winter is about to rear its ugly face. We've been in the high 50s/mid 60s over the past few days but that's all about to change.

Starting tomorrow, our high is 41 and will continue to drop into the 30s for the next 10 days...with fucking snow in the forecast for the next few days.

FUCK

When is Winter going to start for the rest of you guys?
It's raining right now but has been windy for the past week or so, always a sign. Weather here is hard to predict, we can be in the 70's on day then down in the 30's the next. Another couple weeks, though, and it will only be cold.

I think it has been warmer in the later weeks of October than usual. Aside from the snow on the day after the Phillies game got delayed.

Only thing good to come out of this is, almost time to get the board/skis waxed and hit the slopes.

Yep MN fucking sucks.

Come to Canada, where winter is REAL.

What's your outlook over the next few weeks?

Winter seems a way off here in the bootheel, but autumn is arriving this afternoon. It's been a few weeks of Indian Summer here, and there's a fresh breeze blowing right now. High yesterday was 75. Tomorrow it's not supposed to get much above 50, I think. The leaves have turned and are just now starting to fall heavily.

It was a glorious day to get out and vote on Tuesday. Sunny, warm, light breeze. Now things get a little desultory.

I feel for my chewer brethren in the North.
It's not the winter in Canada that would get to me, it's being locked in a house with people who have Canadian accents that would.

That's HOUSE, Not HOOSE, you retarded fucking Canadian.

After a month of that, I'd be going Jack Torrance on your Canadian asses.

To each their own, I guess. Our Winter season lasts waaay too damn long, and I'm not a Winter sports enthusiast (although I do enjoy snowmobiling occasionally) and I never understood the appeal of ice fishing to pass the time.
I don't understand how you guys can make it through the winters that you do. Anything below 10o C pisses me off. I've only had one really bad winter, when I was in the army, with 6-7 feet of snow and temperatures dropping to -25o C (-13o F for those of you living in the Middle Ages) and it broke me.

Right now we're in a hot week, but it's normally a 0 degree situation... normally. And we already had some lovely snow. I like winter, but the real winner here is my husky... I start complaining at -30. I really hope we don't have the ludicrous amount of snow we had last year...

And btw... Fahrenheit SUCKS. It's a mess to understand. Celcius is logical. Damn you Americans!

I'm going with this. Looking at the forecast, the coldest it's going to be in the next five days is about 46. But our highs will still be mostly in the low 80s/upper 70s. We'll be in the 70's through mid-December at this rate. We only rarely dipped below freezing last year. I want a real winter for once.

I'm originally from Michigan, and my ancestry is Scots/Irish/Finnish/German. I don't belong in Texas. I still sweat when it gets above 75, even after 25 years here.
Man, it may get as low as forty degrees at night where where I am! And on maybe one or two days, clouds! It might even rain once.

One of our failings as a country is that we didn't embrace the metric system when the rest of the world did. A half hearted attempt was made in the Carter era (as I recall), but it didn't catch on. We should have just said 'Fuck it, we're changing' back then, but we didn't. Any scorn that you send our way for not changing is justly deserved and I have no rebuttal.
It is currently 64 °F / 18 °C. The humidity is at 37%.

Today's forecast is sunny. Highs in the upper 70s. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph.

The rest of the week? I think it might actually get a couple of degrees warmer. Partly cloudy by Sunday, though.
I just came back from tanning in the back yard. Yesterday we hit 38C
post #17 of 407
It's 80F in Houston. I'd kill to be back in Toronto. Our winter's last for about 6, maybe 8 weeks, starting the week before Christmas...and even then the low is about 40.

I miss snow. I'd shovel the shit out of it in exchange for not having mud butt for 9 months out of the year.
Every student who has to take a Science course agrees that we should use Celsius instead of Fahrenheit. F is such a pain in the ass to work with, not to mention having to constantly convert between the two. So many flashbacks...ugh.

Anyway, I kind of hope we get a real winter over here this year. Maybe a blizzard, close things down for a few days. Plus it makes everything look clean, for once.

Tati, You're gonna get skin cancer.

Tati: If you're going to make a post like that, the least that you could do is post a pic of the gorgeous South American babe that you were ogling while you sat out in the sun.

A fresh blanket of snow is truly beautiful. Once the grit and sand gets into it from the snowplows, it transforms into something unspeakably ugly.
Buncha pussies, you guys.
Hey, not every one around here is a winter pussy! I actually dislike summer... too warm. Too humid, actually.

And Tati, thank you for remind us that you are experiencing summer in your country...
Tati, is it true that when you flush your toilet, the water goes counter clockwise*?

Edit: Oops, I mean clockwise. Had to check my toilet.
We're probably about a week to ten days behind you Judas. Only hint of snow is this coming Sunday, with temps in the 40's after that. Snow will be here soon enough; we normally get the first staying accumulation around the 15th. At least it'll send the wood spiders into suspended animation for six months.

MInot ND.

It's a near whiteout at the moment. I can't find the actual totals as of right now on the Weather Channel site but we were expecting eight inches as of last night.

Good thing I took today off. Now if this fucks up my trip to Religulous (about two hours drive down) on Saturday I will be pissed.
It's a frigid 70 degrees here. Thankfully there's not a cloud in the sky so the sun can warm things up a bit.

Apologize for taking The Wicker Man then.

I'll do my best, it sounds like it's sticking around for a day or two.

Northern Norway here, no snow yet, but the frost has begun to take hold.
The worst thing about winter is that you can't put a foot outside your front door without getting cold and/or wet.
The fact that it's dark most of the time is prettÿ cool though.
Here's to a snowless Christmas!!

You live in a beautiful country. If, by chance, you live in a coastal area, could you take a pic and post it in here?

Unlike Monday-Wednesday. Gloomy Seattle weather (in Central FL, WTF) with highs in the low 60s. :-(
post #32 of 407
Due to the weather changes, I've had a serious cold/flu type thing for almost a month. The doctor told me yesterday that I now have Asthma due to this lingering cold.

It's actually in the 70's today and I'm carrying an albuterol inhaler.
I know that I get old because I start bitching about the seasons.

I seriously can´t remember a snowy christmas for more than a decade around here. Basicly a real winter doesn´t happen around here any more. We just have a prolonged fall that somehow winds up into a shitty spring. For the next four month we will have something between 5 and 15 degree (Celsius that is), rain and stormy weather. And I hate it.

Here is to global warming!
I'd take rain over snow any day. The only reason I'm looking forward to snow this weekend in St.Paul is so the funky month of October is over. This time of year mother nature likes to play games-rain and cold for 3 days, frigid overnight temps, then 70 degrees and sunny, then back and forth. You keep wondering when that last perfect weekend is over.

Also, whenever we get that first snow storm, or even the first big thunderstorm of the season, too many Minnesota drivers seemingly forget how to drive in bad weather and act like overly cautious pussies or (especially if you drive a big bad truck) they drive like raging assholes.

QFT. It's ridiculous.

Damn, how many Minnesotans do we have on this site?

What Fat Dragon said about the first snowfall is dead on. It'll be bumper cars tomorrow morning as people figure out how to drive in snow again.
I can't wait till I have to wake up at 5 in the morning to shovel the driveway and then take most likely icy freeway to school at night. Should be fun.
I'm just glad I'm not in the city any more where I had to dig my car out of the snow at 5 am and repark so I don't get towed. Garages are a godsend.

Ah yes...the joy of 'Snow Emergency Routes'. Those of you in the south (fuck you, by the way) will never know the joy of having to plan your parking for the snowplows.

I did it for twelve years. Then I moved. You can too.
In our southern bretherens' defense, I would much rather have to deal with snow than the dozen hurricanes they get and the giant fucking mosquitos that follow in said storms' wake. I've been in plenty of blizzards in my life, but none have ever torn the roof off my house.

Here's a couple from this summer, were I to take a picture now, it would be a black square.

*sigh* There's no such thing as a Canadian accent. There's Newfoundland accents, Cape Breton accents, Quebecois, Ottawa Valley accent, Saskatchewanian accent etc. but there's no one accent in all of Canada. And as near as I know, there's no one who says hoose instead of house.

Fantastic pictures.

A request: As Winter progresses in Norway, can you take pictures and post them? Seriously, your country is flat out STUNNINGINGLY beautiful.

Right, I'm off to bed...

Judas Booth Edit:Yeah, If the opportunity presents itself I'll snap some photos.

As much as I hate Winter, the first snowfall can be quite beautiful. I snapped these pictures just this morning:

And now...the morning commute to work.
What is that? A dusting?

I really do love the way snow makes everything look. Unfortunately, most of the time it seems to rain right after a snowstorm in NJ, which turns everything into a slushy mess.

Yes, it's just a teaser compared to what's coming. It's coming down heavier now.
What the hell? Come on winter-Bring it! The weather is colder, but where is that damn snow?

I can safely say this because I'm taking the bus for the foreseeable future. I have the windows all 3M'd up, what's the holdup?

Come on Sven, work your magic.
