NJ Bans "Flavored Cigarettes," Includes Shisha

I was in my local tobacco shop this morning picking up some Shisha for the hookah, and was told that I won't be able to buy it in this state anymore as of January 1st. Looks like one more thing I get to drive to PA for!

I can't find a copy of the bill, but this is what I could find:

Quote:
TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph F. Vitale and Barbara Buono which would prohibit the sale of certain flavored cigarettes in the State of New Jersey was approved by the Senate today by a vote of 34-1.

“New Jersey invests a lot of money annually into programs designed to help people kick the smoking habit or educate kids so that they never light up in the first place,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex, the Chair of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee. “While the State is doing the right thing in funding smoking cessation and education programs, tobacco companies are constantly trying to recruit new customers and are targeting the next generation of potential smokers. New Jersey should not stand by and allow tobacco companies to use marketing schemes like flavored tobacco, which blatantly target kids to start smoking.”

The bill, S-613, would prohibit the sale or distribution of cigarettes which have a characterizing flavor that is attractive to youth. Specifically, the bill prohibits any cigarettes which either as a whole or in part are flavored with natural or artificial flavors to produce distinctive fruit, chocolate, vanilla, honey, alcoholic beverage, herb or spice flavors, among others. The bill exempts menthol or clove cigarettes from the prohibition, and does not apply to cigars, cigarillos, pipe tobacco or smokeless tobacco.

A person who violates the provisions of this bill would be liable for a civil penalty of not less than $250 for the first offense, not less than $500 for the second offense, and $1,000 for the third and subsequent offenses.

“Flavored cigarettes are a dangerous and insidious marketing ploy to ensure a constant flow of new tobacco customers – even in the face of the obvious negative health consequences associated with smoking,” said Senator Vitale. “Candy and fruit flavors are intended to make smoking more attractive, particularly to younger smokers who have yet to pick up the habit. We must ban these cigarettes in the Garden State, and take a stand against Big Tobacco’s efforts to ensnare a new generation of smokers.”

The bill now heads to the Assembly for consideration. An identical bill was unanimously approved by the Senate last session, but was not reviewed by the Assembly before the session ended.
Funny how the article never mentions shisha, yet the wording allows it to be included. I'm kind of pissed, but it's cheaper in PA anyway.

What kooky bullshit is this NJ? You're not allowed to pump your own gas and now this?

Seeing as I was employed in the tobacco industry for quite a while I say it's for the best. Only the vilest tobacco gets picked to get flavor added. Seriously, just being around it makes your eyes water.

Makes sense. If it's shit, throw some flavoring on there to hide the taste.

Hey, I own some of that stuff. There are times when I really don't feel like eating but I have to. Viola. Ramen.

Ramen should only be a backup to your backup food. Good GOD, I can still remember what the stench of nuked Ramen smells like...

Oh well microwaving it is just sick.

I remember when a roomate in college microwaved a marhmellow peep. The strench nearly made me throw up.

When a McDonald's isn't around, Ramen is the de facto choice of when you've been drinking at 2 in the morning.

Oh GOD, no. The stench when sober is bad enough; I'd puke for sure if I had to smell that when drunk.

Isn't there a White Castle or something by you? That's pretty much the ultimate for after-bar eats.

Shisha IS the hookah if I'm not mistaken. My friends and I regularly hang-out in shisha joints around the university campus. What's the harm in flavoured tabacco? (well, i mean compared to regular tobacco?)

Well, I'm quitting cigarettes (and it's going quite well, actually), and I enjoy a hookah smoke every once in a while. It's not like I'm walking around with a hookah smoking away in public 24/7, it's just something to chill on every week or so. Nothing different from smoking a cigar.

I don't smoke "flavored cigarettes," and the ones I've had have been disgusting. It's that they fit Shisha (and no, that's the name of the tobacco, the piece itself is called a hookah) into the law that kind of pisses me off. But like I said, I'll just drive 20 minutes to PA and give my tax money to them.

You can now respond with "You're fucking retarded."

So.....are you the guy who actually buys a "tobacco only" product and actually smokes tobacco out of it?

Nope, I put weed in it every once in a while, but most of the time it's pretty harsh and you wind up coughing up a lung. I'd have to put an eighth of weed in the hookah to fill up the bowl. *It's not a glass hookah made for pot, I imported it from India. You can't light it with a lighter, either, you have to use coals.

I save my bong for the weed most of the time.

*Edit

No, no. I'm that guy.

my god this bothers me. the packages say "CAUSES CANCER" right on them. it is illegal to sell to children or to buy for children. any further efforts to keep cigs away from kids are up to parents, NOT the law. the idea i as a adult cannot decide to buy a cig that tastes like something because some terrible parent somewhere might complain makes me madder than anything. america gets up in arms over smoking so it can feel good about itself and pretend that the rest of its lifestyle remotely approachs "healthy".
