VIDEO GAME DRAFT - Discussion - Page 22

Decent Sims that were overlooked:
'Caesar III'
'Pharaoh'

RTS games:
'Stronghold'
'Majesty'
No Minesweeper? This draft is invalid.
Minesweeper? Christ, why not suggest Solitare on there?
Minesweeper is barely better than NARC.
for all of the times that I've played 'Minesweeper' while waiting for shit to compile, I should have picked it as my number one choice.
Holy fuck, I somehow forgot one of my favorite shooters ever, Choplifter. Such a cool game. I seriously think I got good enough at the arcade version that I could have been in tournaments. No idea if it holds up though, unfortunately.

Nah I don't fuck with them. I need to get a decent USB "Nintendo-like" controller, then maybe I'll change my tune.

Although there's a couple of allround joypad-to-usb adapters around (allowing the use of the original controllers), I do all my gaming on a regular ps2 style Dualshock controller. Works for me, and frankly- with all respect to the original machines, I wouldn't want to go back to retrogaming without instant quicksave/load function. Life's too short for that sh*t.
Now, the fact that no one drafted Puzzle Fighter. Criminal, that.
I'm surprised the classic arcade gammers never selected Tapper. The only game whose joystick was a beer tap.
No Sierra love? Kings Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry? Wow.

Yeah, but 'Tapper' wasn't all that fun, frankly.

Lesuire Suit Larry was a contender, but ultimately, Lucas was king back then.

I would agree with that.

Still, it was the only game I ever came across that in-game advertising from Budweiser.

A humble question: How the fuck did 6 days of this go by, some with multiple picks, and NONE of the Prince of Persia games got drafted?
Or Top Skater. Not that I knew how to play that game. But no Time Crisis? None? Or Virtua Cop?
if we're talking skating games, I'll kindly direct your attention to '720 Degrees' as pretty much the definitive arcade game.

Another 'Gauntlet' like quarter hog that was fun: 'Quartet'. Unlike 'Guantlet', this one was a side-scroller where you controlled a futuristic warrior with a jetpack and different weaponry, but the concept was the same: Get your 4 guys to the next level, inserting as many quarters as necessary.
I'll see your 720 Degrees and raise you SSX 3 and Tricky. For me, the two games that did for snowboarding what NBA Jam did for basketball.
At least Golden Tee wasn't selected. Fuck that noise.
Yeah... Also, surprised that Prince of Persia was not picked. In fact, the SNES port was a superior version that I would have applauded.

For what it's worth - I selected Flashback, which - in some ways - is a futuristic, cyberpunk version. Wouldn't you agree?

I got Prince of Persia.

DOH! And me as the lonely voice in the desert who claims the much maligned Warrior Within to be the best of the series. I'm more and more regretting my draft of Jak3 (but I will stand by it!).

ETA awright, and Tati got it covered then. Although of course the 3D versions are an entirely different beast.
Ah, I see it. Chosen list hadn't updated.

Sands Of Time's a far superior game, but the original deserves the respect.
Indeed.

As for the Sierra question, I hated these textual input games. 1st, my English kinda sucked then, and 2nd, it always ended up me typing retarded stuff like:

The merchant is selling all kind of weapons and armors.
> I inquire for the price of an axe.
The merchant will sell you the axe for 6 pieces of gold.
>Fuck that. At this rate, I take his daughter right here and there and assfuck the bitch on the counter.
Wrong input
> I know that. Being a knight, I hammer forth the woman in the name of Justice.

In the name of all that is holy, will somebody please sig this?

Regarding the Chosen List: When I get 5 hours of free fucking time again, I'll update it. Tati is a cruel taskmaster...

Back then I had this type-in book by Peter Gerrard, 'Exploring Adventures on the C64'. I was yer typical Basic learning affair, but also contained a survey of adventure gaming history. After heaping praise on the works of Douglas Adams for about 100 pages, the final chapter talked about the emergence of 'graphic text adventures'. Remember, this was in 1987 or so. Basically he was very doubtful that the integration of graphics in text adventures would ever catch on. Because, to paraphrase: 'a text will always paint a thousand pictures'.
I would like to see that creep eat his words now. I spent hours finding the typos in his stupid program printouts.

Sierra was hardly that bad (ok perhaps some of the earlier KQ was close to the above). Granted they hold a soft spot due to them being the first PC-based games I played. Plus, Quest for Glory was one of the first games I can remember that allowed you to port your character from the previous series.
Regarding Sierra...

The Police Quest series was always closest to my heart. Undoubtedly though, they were pioneers in that type of game and certainly deserve respect and admiration...

But, ultimately, Tati's right. LucasArts kind of took the crown.
After months of trying to find a way of getting the Persian Rug from under the Dragon in 'Colossal Cave', I wasn't sure whether to give up on text adventures all-together...or percevere.
When I got finally it, it was due to frustration, and totally by accident...
...AND SO FUCKING SIMPLE!!!

...and I was on such a high, I vowed NEVER to be put-off by a text-based game again.

Then came HHGTTG...

A part of me would have gone "Hmmmm" if someone had actually picked Minesweeper - that thing can barely be called a game. BUT - I can't deny that I have spent many hours procrastinating on that shit at the office.

So I certainly would be unable to throw a stone, know what I mean?

I almost picked World Of Goo for the bonus round. It's that good.
I'm going to try and get to the final update for the Chosen List tonight.

Tati and cheftournel have been sending me links to downloadable versions of many of the games; I'll be updating those links as well. Please continue to send me links as you find them.

Just wanted to drop in and say thanks to Tati for that link.

I am now going to get lost in the wonderful world of pogosticks and tepees with Commander Keen 4. 576KB of greatness. The good ole' days.

Now it's just a matter of figuring out how to get it onto my Gateway 2000 (which miraculously still works).

Same here.
But I've only played the demo.
(You can't get it over STEAM in Europe 'til January...yeah, go figure.)
Shit...I've just remembered 'Terminator: Future Shock'!!
GODDAMN IT!!!

How are the emulator downloads from that site? I'm not really tech savy and I have an irrational fear of fucking up my computer.

No viruses. if that's what you mean. I got Duke 3D to work under compatibility mode for Windows 95. No such luck with getting older DOS games like Commander Keen to run using Vista, I'm gonna have to dig out the old floppy drive and transfer it to my old DOS-based Gateway to play it.

But I have yet to try this DOSBox program. I'll give it a shot and let you know.
Good to hear because I would love to have Day of the Tentacle back in my hands.

No kidding, you played Commander Keen also eh? Him and the funny jump sounds he made.

Oh hell yea, I loved CK back in the day. Monster Bash was another fave. <3 Old Apogee Games.

OK, so the emulator works, even though its a little tricky because it's DOS and its been AGES since I've used it. I followed this Wiki here:

http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Basic_Set...tion_of_DosBox

When installing it, just install in to your C: drive. Don't put in it program files cause that's just another command line you have to type out in DOS. After that, just follow the directions in the Wiki and you'll be good to go. I'm surprised how easy that was.

Time to play

Bwahahahaha

Paddle War, mother fuckers!
InTheShadows: Thanks for taking point on this. It will be interesting to revisit some of these older games from my youth...
No problem, Judas. If you guys have any problems let me know, but that Wiki should be able to lead you through it. There's so many games I remember from back then that I want to play through again, it's going to be fun.

And thanks Tati for turning us onto it!

Another forgotten classic side scroller - Monster Bash, starring Johnny Dash in his pajamas as you fight zombies and rescue the local pets.

If only we could arrange some Worms multiplayer, i'd die happy.
I've seen some interest in emulation in a couple of posts... although the owning of ROMS is a legally shady area, emulation of the original hardware in software form is perfectly legit, and offers you many advantages. You can completely configure your controls & display, enter game genie (cheat) codes, and of course there's instant saves to finally crack that impossibly hard game you spent hours on as a kid.

I've taken the liberty to post a couple of links to my favourite emulator programs in the 'Button Mashers' thread, for those interested. Hope it helps.
A follow up on the Bonus Round:
- ED209 and Jcassady have yet to make picks. If/when they do, I will update the Chosen List.
- Anakin's Dad needs to make an alternate pick for 'Area 51'; that was drafted by the previous person. If/when he re-drafts, I will update the Chosen List.
Totally missed Dan Baker taking Area 51. I guess I'll have to dump his body in the ravine next to Tati's.

New pick is up.

Judas has updated the chosen list, i think he deserves one more congratulations and a big THANK YOU from all of us. His work was amazing.
Great work Judas... And all those emulator links are sure to be helpful. I have a Mac and already own pretty good emulators for consoles. But Mame for Mac is not that great yet and we also still need to find a good Sega CD/32X emulator. Hope someone comes up with that soon.

For all you Mac users, a pretty good place to get emulators is www.bannister.org and there are plenty of good rom sites on the net. My personal favorite is www.romhustler.net

Happy hunting. This draft was a blast.
