For me its a toss up between White Zombie and Clutch.

Ive only been listening to Clutch for a couple years so im not sure how it will hold up further on in life.

I don't think it's difficult to explain at all - craft, innovation, impact.

The problem is some people really won't shut up about it.

While I celebrate their entire catalog (except the Syd Barrett stuff, can't stand it for the most part), Pink Floyd's Animals is still jaw-dropping every time I listen to it. While Dark Side gets all the glory, Animals sits confidently in the back of the room, knowing it's the greatest (if I were pressed).

You're more crazy than Syd Barrett was to not enjoy his music!!

It has been and always shall be Aerosmith.

Honorable mention to Queen, The Band & Depeche Mode.

It was merely a test run for Dark Side but that Pompeii concert is an amazing document of the band, they were still experimenting, I just fucking love the middle section of Echoes, just hearing Gilmour's guitar playing off against Nick Mason's stealth like drumming, it's just a monumentally epic performance.

I guess it's the same with The Who, they have that combustible energy, Young Man Blues on Live at Leeds is probably the definitive statement on the band, you have Pete Townshend alternating between crackerjack riffs and short, punchy rhythm chords, Keith Moon just propelling everything like a jet engine, John Entwistle locking everything in like a missile and Roger Daltrey singing with such a raw ferocity, all that combined, the explosive energy they create is like a musical neutron bomb.

I'm really not trying to be a dismissive asshole, but that group has never really done much for me. "Dream On", to me, is the only Aerosmith song I know of that really matters. And that one sounds nothing like anything else they've ever recorded from what I've heard. I never have been much of a fan of dumbed-down rock, though. The appeal of AC/DC, for instance, totally eludes me.

The same can be said about tons of artists/bands, though, who don't even approach the holy realm that The Beatles exist in. I can say that even though they're not my #1 favorite group of all-time (they're in my top 10 for sure, though). And for the record, I actually don't go on about them that much until a topic like this one comes up.

You've got me tongue-tied here. DSOTM is definitely more spawling/varied and less dark than Animals, but I've been enjoying Animals more in recent years. I think classic rock radio overkill sucked a lot of the amazing out of DSOTM for me. That might give Animals an unfair advantage, but it's hard to tell. Meddle is awesome too, as others here have already mentioned. I can still enjoy The Wall, but I honestly don't have the urge to listen to it that often anymore.

I wasn't slamming you in the least - I just recall seeing someone put out the statement that "without the Beatles, there would be nothing."

Which, y'know, is just fucking ignorant. I certainly agree that people love to overrate things they love. And I don't have that much of a problem with it as long as their opinion is somewhere near reality. But I'll touch on my friend's favorite inexplicably-overrated act - the Dave Matthews Band. They are competent enough granola rock who know their way around their instruments and can write a nice hook, but following them around on tour? Geez.

Aerosmith were a blues-based boogie-rock force back in the 70s.

Post-"Love in an Elevator" they should be hung. Repeatedly.

The first 2 minutes of Dazed and Confused disagrees with you. But then, the closing minutes of Armageddon tries its damnedest to cancel out all that awesome.

I'm not going include bands that I love so much that they've been integrated into who I am. This list includes David Bowie, The Beatles, The Who and Pink Floyd. They've transcended being "favorites."

The band that may have the best chance of joining them is The New Pornographers. I think all four of their albums are masterpieces and Mass Romantic may be my most listened album ever. I also love the band member's solo projects (AC Newman, Neko Case, Destroyer), but when they're together, they become a group that has the serious power to turn a bad day into a good day.

Also love Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, REM, The Kinks, Bruce Springsteen...I'm definitely more of a 60s/70s guy, but I'm desperately trying to get into modern music. I'm finally starting to enjoy Radiohead (although they took awhile to grow on me).

Y'know, I was seriously lagging on my PF for awhile. I mean, I had Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall for some time, but I kinda played The Wall out for myself and DSotM just never grabbed me. In HS I had some friends who were Barrett-era Floydheads, but that stuff just isn't my bag. So I kinda came to the conclusion that "in theory I love Pink Floyd; in practice, not so much."

But then I got Live at Pompeii through Netflix and its only like the best concert film EVER, so I figured it was time to give pre-DSotM/post-Barrett Floyd a shot.

So I snapped up Wish You Were Here from the used bin a few months back, and the whole damn thing is great. Just spent a road trip (attempting*) to get some quality time in with Animals and Meddle, and both are pretty awesome.

Well, I like you.

And I'm going to say Elliott Smith, as his music continues to hit me the hardest after all this time.

I think of favourite albums more than bands these days. Because Badmotorfinger, Funhouse and Songs For The Deaf are my favourite albums but those are from bands that have also put out things I don't like as much.

Best live band is The Hives.
The Hives are shit.

Awesome, I can't be bothered to spell the names of my favorite bands correctly either. Right now I'm listening to Nervayna.

Being a music nerd and a 15-year veteran (and growing) record store clerk, the idea of a "all-time favorite band" is kind of a joke. Nothing is permanent when you have all the music in the world at your fingertips. But, with that in mind, for the past about five years Mellow Candle has been my all-time favorite band. They put out one album in 1972, I believe, and it continues to slay me. Part of the late sixties/early seventies psychedelic folk scene instigated by Fairport Convention, their album Swaddling Songs was, at one time, the most sought out, the most valuable major label psych-folk album. All original songs and all awesome. It's definitely that for me as I shelled out $200 bucks to get this baby five years ago. The most I've ever spent on an album. Now you can have it for twenty bucks on CD. Them's the breaks.
Metallica... their first 4 albums still kick major ass even to this day. Led Zeppelin is a close second and I also like Pantera and Guns N' Roses but if I had to choose an absolute favorite it would be Metallica.
It pains me but I have to say my favorite band of all time is Oasis. I remember when I was 14 and I saw these two hobo-looking motherfuckers on MTV saying that they're the best band in the world EVER. And then they showed the video for "Live Forever" and I had to agree. I know there are better songwriters and musicians out there but you never top your first love. And that ridiculously awesome helicopter-video was the shit in -97.

One of my all time favorites may actually get together and not suck. And no it's not Zeppelin. Faith No More, bitches.

Nice... in my opinion... The Wall is the greatest Album ever made. It's not my favorite, though. It's not even my favorite PF. Animals is.

But my favorite bands?

My life:
Pearl Jam
Radiohead
Afghan Whigs
Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven
Midnight Oil
Nirvana

Previous Life:
The Who
Pink Floyd
Led Zep
Yardbirds
Byrds
Neil Young

I'm forgetting a lot...

That report doesn't sound particularly encouraging, actually.

Please don't go using context clues, I beg you. It's the first possible good news I've had in months. NAWNAWNAWNAW I CAN'T HEAR YOU.

But it's not news at all.. it's the music equivalent of Oh Don Piano. The link to Patton interview that's on the page you linked has expired, but I suspect it was to this laughable piece of crap journo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i7nPy271wQ

Which is from JANUARY btw. And it goes like this: after some tart spouting musical history inaccuracies for a minute, we have a montage of Mike Patton telling us, basically, that he had a fun time being in FNM. Well duh. At the end, he remarks that there's 'no reason not to get together with the guys to do some stuff', and a voice-over question pasted in front of that suggesting more than what he probably answered to during the actual interview.
The source for the rumour is Kerrang (NME for metalheads), who attribute it to 'industry insiders'. I'm guessing some rags sold sufficient copies over the Ledzep tour rumour. Hell, even the only FNM member actually reacting on the news literally says 'nothing's happening.'

Face it, there is absolutely no reason at all Patton should want to go on a jukebox reunion tour milking the cash cow. He was a rock star in a (great, no arguing that) rockstar band, he has moved on. Maybe you should too. He's been doing really amazing stuff since FNM broke up, as well as releasing top material from other bands on his label (Melvins, anyone?). I can get as nostalgic as the next guy, but I'll never get this urge to re-live the past over and over again.

I am specifically going to leave out the ones that everyone always thinks of, like Queen, The Beatles, and Zeppelin.

I would have to say my favorite band(s) of all time, other than the obvious ones, would have to be Dave Matthews Band and Widespread Panic. Yes, the flame war may now begin. Bring it on.
