I went to the Silver Lake protest last night (Thank god for the Red Line, otherwise I wouldn't have gone) and it was huge. Apparently there is a national day of protest on the 15th.

Find your location and if you have the time join in:

LA's will be at City Hall at 10:30. I'll see if I can make it.

As a strait man I don't really get why anyone would volunteer to be tide to the draconian marriage laws that we have in this country, unless you are the party that would benefit from them. Most marriages end in failure, and that mean one part is going to take it up the ass, by the other party. In a strait marriage the man is almost always the financially stronger of the couple. So when it come time to divorce he get reamed.

Now if you want to band marriage as a legal system of law for all, I am all for that.

Friends don't let their rich friend get married, not with out trust funds and iron clad prenuptial in place before hand.

You DO understand the point of gay marriage, right?

Thanks for the links, Ed. Commentary aside, of course.

I think my fiancee and I may go to the Orlando protest. Her brother recently came out, so she's taking this issue personally.

I don't understand how so many people in California could have voted for this. They're the gayest of all the states!

Outside of San Francisco, not really. It's a big fucking state.

We're the gayest.

But we're also the most torn about it, too.

That's why we have a tremendous guilt complex, and feel the need to make ourselves suffer unduly.

Jersey gay? Wait a second....

And as for California. This is a big state. We've got hicks, hillbillies and dumbasses just like everyone else.

The Sopranos are just a small part of our population.

Where was all this hullaballoo pre-vote? Did many folks think this had no chance of passing (I know I did)?

It's a question I ask myself all the time. Maybe people thought much like MA people would be fine with it and shoot this thing down. Regardless of what you think. Social issues should not go to proposition. It's a clear abuse of the initative process.

I might swing by the Austin protest -- it's only a few blocks from my hotel.*

*Then again, I might be in San Antonio at that particular time...we'll see.

Yeah, people seem to think that LA and SF are way bigger than they are without noting the Inland Empire, San Diego, Central Coast, Bakersfield, etc. Two enclaves don't make this state any less fucktarded and assbackwards.

Closest one to me is in Grand Forks, about five hours away, but I sent the link to a few people out there, hopefully get the ball rolling.

I honestly thought the whole state was fairly liberal. Certainly learned my lesson from this.

Definitely not.

For perspective: FreeRepublic.com is based in Fresno.

He's right. The state republican party is a bastion of nutjobs and kooks (They will not compromise) and have pretty much dumped all moderates. Which is why the ones the legislature hold the budget hostage every year.

It's also why after Arnold there are no Republican candidates who have a serious chance for Gov.

Don't forget all of the liberals that are still against this sort of thing. I think it is mostly generational. Gay is still a bad word to lots of other wise open minded individuals.

I'm going to try and see if I can get to the one in Newark (if I can get my work and family stuff done in time). If not, I know a few friends who'll be there anyway.

Jeez, had to be Newark. Is the city still as much of a disaster as it used to be?

Could be worse. Could be Camden *Lighting and thunder*

It's still pretty ugly, but I think a lot of the "bad element" has gone over to neighboring Irvington and East Orange. The worst areas are still around NJIT/Rutgers Newark and the area around the Parkway. Stay downtown or near the Ironbound and your good (the protest is outside city hall, so I think your pretty safe.) And the waterfront is actually kind of nice.

Yea, Camden is the worst. Only place I've been genuinely frightened driving around in.

I'm tempted by the Newark protest, although I might as well go to the one in Manhattan.

The Prop 8 protests are now focusing on the donors to the campaign and Sundance:

Quote:
UPDATE: This is at least one Sundance theater owned by the man who gave nearly $10,000 to the Mormon and religious right anti-gay bigots supporting Prop 8 in California:
HOLIDAY VILLAGE CINEMAS, Cinemark Holiday Village Cinemas
The cinema is in Park City, Utah. That's the "gay-friendly" "super-liberal" town that we were told would never lift a finger to hurt gays. I pity the person whose movies are showing at that cinema during Sundance, because I have a funny feeling there are going to be some really bad pickets. And it's not clear who is going to remain in line for the movie after being informed that by attending the movie they're supporting a Prop 8 donor. Some directors and producers are going to be really pissed at Sundance for putting their movies at that cinema.
I think Prop 8 was something that shouldn't have been passed and those who are unhappy with have every right to protest it to get it overruled but I'm not sure how I feel about digging through contributions made to political campaigns to find who to protest against.

Put it in this context. Those who are protesting the Prop are probably shocked to learn that they helped support the Prop passing by spending money with those who supported the Prop. Kinda weird sounding (reading it back) but suffice to say I'd want to know who contributed financially to the Prop passing. Therefore knowing where I will never spend money again.

A friend of mine was at the El Coyote protest and was one of the people who went nuts after the woman involved said that she wouldn't do anything to compensate for her vote on 8.

The New York one was pretty awesome. The weather held off just long enough. Enthusiasm the likes I hadn't seen from this generation. Hope it went well elsewhere, too!

I was also at the downtown rally. It was cool seeing the mayor and some other city officials but there needed to be less speeches and more marching.

After an hour and a half I got so tired (Because I hadn't eaten or brought water with me) I basically screamed at the 15th speaker (I have no idea who the guy was) and just yelled MARCH MARCH MARCH MARCH MARCH MARCH.

Apparently when I went out last night a bunch of guys from the rally recognized me (I was pretty much wearing the same clothes).

It was also cool just hanging around and chatting with people. I actually came across some guy who works for the Foreign Service and a bunch of actors. I like getting into Dave Atell's Insomniac-esque situations like this. Just hanging around and shooting shit.

Plus I got to see Olvera Street. Something I had never done before. And I've lived in this city all my life.
It's a terrible situation. Olbermann can be a little over the top sometimes, but he nailed it in this special comment.
