...but has this already been linked to around here?

Simon Pegg on Why Zombies Shouldn't Be Allowed to Run
post #2 of 15
Well, I haven't read it before. Good stuff. Also, I really, really want to see "Dead Set".

I second that, on all counts. "It's hard to run with a cold, let alone the most serious malady of them all", namely death, quoth the article. Bloody brilliant. One thing I think he missed is the so bad it's good "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things", which featured fast zombies earlier than any example he cites. But I agree with his overall point; being a traditionalist in most things, I agree that the implacability, the inevitability, of the slow zombie is much more effective as a cinematic device.

Except that in regards to Dead Set the zombies aren't straight metaphors for death, they're more about the destruction of intellect when faced with the lowest common denominator.

Also, the Dead Set thread

Whoops. Sorry for the extra thread. I don't actually follow the creature thread or zombie movies much, but I thought people would like to read it and just posted it here.

It's not been linked before, I just thought people might be interested in what Pegg was analysing.

I ran across this myself. Pegg does pretty much nail his points.

He does make good points. But I don't really care one way or another, if the story is entertaining I could care less if zombies ran. Like he says, the whole zombie mythology has evolved form the voodoo type, to the Romero cannibalistic ghouls and the talking zombies in Return of the Living Dead. I don't see why a running zombie is a problem.

I think he's saying a running zombie is desensitizing people to the slow-moving zombie, making them seem comical - not terrifying, and that a fast zombie is a solution to a fast-food culture.

Much like how people prefer a sped-up remix of a song.

They shouldn't be called zombies, although I do agree i'm not really that bothered by it. They're more like rabid cannibals.

*Cough*

It's a well argued position, but zombies, I can take them or leave them, not exactly my favorite movie monster. I do have to give Pegg props for calling out the "velociraptor scream" though, I fucking hate that, it's as if being undead somehow grants you the ability to front Judas Priest. It's just such a cheap and unrewarding way to grab a jolt out of the audience.

Now that you mention it, THOSE fuckers ran really fast too, as I recall, and Pegg neglects to mention them.

What's funny is I've heard people say how much they love Return of the Living Dead and then say how they hate the Dawn of the Dead remake because of the running. I wouldn't mind it if they owned up to their hypocrisy or you know have a different valid criticism for the film.
