Lindsay: Obama is our first colored president - Page 3

I had no idea that Amercians are sensitive to the word 'colored'. What's the actual explanation here?

Also funny is how I have seen several foreign journalists use the term in interviews clearly not knowing that 'colored' is wrong.

Actually, that was what the argument was about. They were saying that "injun" was significantly worse than "indian", which I was clueless about. I don't think I've ever heard anyone use it in real life, which is probably part of it.

It's based on what has happened in the past in this Country. It was the "PC" racist term people in the South used before, during, (and after) the Civil Rights movement.

Lindsay showed up to a Paris night club wearing a fur stole and got doused in flour by animal rights activists.

Holy poetic justice. Did they know about the whole "colored President" thing before they doused her in whiteness?

Is that Bleach?

ElCap, we need an account of your whereabouts. And a story about what it was like to bleach Lohan.

Christ, the way the light hits the flour I thought for a nanosecond that someone had thrown a chemical flare or something at her.

Wow. Talk about a rather manufactured controvercy.

I mean, c'mon. We're not exactly discussing a particularly bright individual here & Ms Lohan isn't known for being someone who is sought out for her great insight & knowledge regarding politics & race in this country. So, if she did happen to use an outdated term to describe our President-Elect, so what?

Considering the source & the context in which it may have been used, it's hardly a real issue IMO.

Was it awkward? Yep.
Very much outdated? Yep.
Should she have known better? Yep.
Was it used in a malicious or racist manner? Hell no. C'mon!

I even use the term myself every once in a while when I'm trying to illustrate to my wife how outdated & inappropriate her use of the phrase "oriental" is to describe an asian person. She doesn't do so in any sort of an intolerant way. It's just a bad habit of hers because it's the term her parents always used when she was growing up & until she met me, she always thought that it was an acceptable term.
So, as a means of correcting her whenever she slips up, I point out to her how no longer appropriate it is by asking her when our "coloured" sister in law & friends will be coming over to visit next ... Which, she knows is a joke on my part, but reminds her of just how out of date the term "oriental" is now.

Indian is perfectly accepted as a synonym for Native American.

This stuff really isn't that hard. There are two ways to describe what we perceive as race - one is skin color and the other is ethnicity. Black and white are really the only acceptable options for the former, African-American, Asian, Native American, Hispanic and so on describe the latter. In the United States, black people are almost always African-American, and African-Americans are almost always black, so the terms are largely interchangeable, if not synonymous. Nonetheless, since race can be a touchy subject, it's good to know precisely what you're saying. For some reason, a lot of white people have the impression that "black" is somehow a bad thing to say, which is ridiculous - if anything, it's preferred. And you won't sound like a closet racist trying too hard to hide it in polite company.

Also, foreigners like Craig should be given a pass. A lot of the connotations around these words are uniquely American and, beyond that, Americans are much more sensitive to racial terms. I spent a lot of the last year around very progressive Irish students and I repeatedly had to remind them that "half-caste" is not an appropriate way to refer to Barack Obama.

A little cursory research shows that some prefer American Indian, and it is generally held that both terms can be used. That's something I didn't know. Based on my experience, I figured Native American was the more modern, acceptable term.

I agree it's not that hard. If somebody prefers to be called something different, I don't see why there's any grumbling over obliging them.

As a highly sensitive Caribbean darkie living in North America I don't lay claim to the term "African-American/Canadian" because it encompasses a certain history and experience that is quite different from those raised in current and former Euro colonial outposts. (I don't get fussy about it because who learns about Caribbean history outside of the Caribbean? British students might get assigned some Selvon or Walcott to read in English class...and that's about it.)

I was flipping through the channels and landed on Ocean's 11 while it was on Peachtree TV last night ... the scene where Matt Damon is pretending to be an agent from the Federal Gaming Commission and they're questioning Bernie Mac's character. He off-handedly uses the term "colored" and Bernie lunges for him. Reminded me of this thread.

When asked what color that would be, Lohan seemed to mumble "Like uh, like thick MO-lasses..."
