Giant signatures

Making them big and annoying doesn't make them any better.
A whole thread for two posters? Two pages by dinner.

JEOPARDY POST

What did John Adams say to Hancock

I can't think of a better way to honor the memory of Ronnie Barron and his contribution to ABOVE THE LAW.

Make it smaller, it would be better and less annoying that way. When your sig is bigger than all of your posts, something is wrong. I still think Hans Gruber has the most annoying sig on the boards, though.

Wasn't there a thread about this not long ago? BobClark started it, I think.
Hans' sig is legendary. It used to be a lot crazier actually.
Just be thankful that banners aren't allowed here.

And I'm not including Nick's, because a) it's his site and b) his signature actually serves a purpose beyond "Hey cool, I found the font size function!"
It's not even the size (even though that's kinda annoying), it's the garish colors that bug the shit out of me.
Macca's Joker sig was funny. The other ones aren't, but they don't bother me. If they did bother me, I would probably just turn off the "View Signatures" option in User CP.
And the last time I'll post in this thread: I thank god I'm color blind sometimes. I didn't even know they were in color until he mentioned the Miami Vice thing in the Game draft thread.

No, it wasn't. At all.
I'm fine with both individuals killing themselves. Hopefully on live webcam feed so that I can at least have the dignity of jerking off to it.
I believe that if McCartney threw himself off a cliff Gruber would make a semi ironic post IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS before lobbing himself off of a cliff.
What's the actual point of forum signatures though? I mean, any signature at all. McCartney's WAS funny, but nothing is funny after you read it a hundred times. Are forum signatures a vestigal thing from internet past? When was it ever needed?

That said, I don't mind any signature.

No. It never was. In any dimension it exist in. McCartney is adept at fucking up jokes left and right, and that Ledger signature was his Michaelangelo.

If the sigs go, the avatars will go. It'll be anarchy!
Avatars have a use. I can remember avatars better than I can remember names. What do signatures add to anything?

Weird, unattributed quotations, of course.

Damn straight. And think if we were to allow pictures like they do on say Jinxworld. Yowza.

But I have nothing against sigs. I love'em but it's pretty clear some are done just to stir shit up.

I turned off signatures back when somebody called bunnydracula learned how to add colour to his.
I guess I don't really see the difference between signatures and avatars and whatever you call the thing under our names. I use each of them to ID Chewers from time to time.

I still remember when Schwartz was "lousy with midgets" for example.

And I'll go one further - I actually appreciate the big colorful sigs because in some cases they helpfully flag posts I can skip right over.
I have nothing against sigs either, people enjoy having them, so by all means, keep enjoying. But if you're going to argue against one type of signature, it kind of falls apart when you consider the fact that ALL signatures are just 1 to 2 inch bits of screen that most people will ignore. It's hard to argue that someone's abusing their signature space.
It's not abuse. It's just obnoxious.
I suppose I'm just extra good at not letting bright purple text get to me.

The thing is, I can skip over most signatures without a second thought. I do it automatically. It's when some people decide to post a sentence/quote in the most obnoxious color imaginable that it bugs me. It draws your eyes to the signature (that you've read 100 times) and distracts from the rest of the posts on the screen (particularly the posts made by the people with the obnoxious signatures, which is kind of ironic).

It's your mutant power.

Sigs get old too fast, and I don't feel like changing it out all the time.
For me, it's not a matter of when they get old. It's when I find something to replace the current one.

Sig'd?
It'd HAVE to be. This is CHUD, home of irony, after all.

I'll be honest, I didn't know there was an option to turn of signatures until I saw James Kimball's post. But I would hate to disable everyone just because of a couple of showoffs.
McCartney's is the only annoying one, and that's why he made it. So, that's that.
I'm pretty indifferent to the things, myself.
I guess they're useful for people who like to advertise their own sites, or similar.
I can understand being annoyed by long sigs. They can take a while to physically scroll through. But being annoyed by COLOURS? Think about how ridiculous that is. CHUD's boring crybaby contingent strikes again!

*sigh*

You're right, colors aren't very important.
I just don't see the big deal in letting them continue. Yes, some people may not be able to appreciate them, but since when has that stopped previous big signatures from going forward? It's Chewer-generated content that doesn't take away from anything at all, and are honestly more fun than the endless signatures related to who the hell Fleed is.

Plain text is easy to ignore, long or otherwise. Bright colored fonts are really obnoxious. If I wanted to see that I would have joined myspace.
For this to explode like these things sometimes do, the thread would have to have been started by Devin or Nick or myself, and people would have to like Paul McCartney (the poster).

Ummm...like, 2 people, maybe? It's not like those quotes are put up in a size 32 font with a hot pink color.

Would calling Flyarz an idiot work?
What's more annoying is why a troll (that also has a big sig) still hasn't been banned. Besides, didn't Devin say he's someone that was banned under a different name?
Hans Gruber's EYE CONDITION - seriously, my eyes, ze goggles zey do nussing.
First they came for the edit feature, and I said nothing.
Then they came for the rep, and I said nothing.
Then they came for the drafts, and I said nothing.
Then they came for the signatures, and I said nothing.
Because I had no signature to say it in.

OMG flyurz maded teh fun of me!

I dunno - maybe I'm the dick here (though I don't mean to be), but I wonder how some of you fare in social situations. Some of you guys get aggravated by the smallest, most arbitrary thing. Almost like you expect EVERYTHING to be catered to YOUR specific tastes and such. Learn to just let some shit go.
Personally, what really bothers me is that CHUD's font hasn't got goddam serifs. I hope the redesign addresses this. But I didn't start a thread about it.

Now that I got my bad joke in, let me offer some anecdotal evidence. It seems that the more monochrome and heavily moderated a forum is, the better for the quality of the discussion. Just the act of posting on the internet drops your IQ about 30 points. If you add colors, moving images and blinking lights to it no one will ever concentrate enough to post something semi-legible.
stelios makes a good point. Everyone always associates the shittier forums with signature pictures, banners and flashing horseshit that immediately assaults your eyes and....OH MY GOD A MONKEY
post #47 of 55
Can we add gamertags now?

I've often speculated on how some of the more, shall we say "opinionated" posters conduct themselves in public. Do they troll groups of people who are having a conversation?
Ahoatam I'm honored... Now my very own Bush-ism can be immortalized.

As for sigs? Leave it be, who cares? Everyone's got their way of doing things. Doesn't mean we all have to like it.

Sometimes good sigs are disliked by bad people.
