Judging by my friends list, not too many of you have GHWT. It's actually a damn good game, and the drums are insanely fun to play. I tried to compare the two a bit here to show you which one's the best.

Good article, Alex.

If a fella were to buy both games, but just one set of hardware, would you still say RB2? I skipped RB1, so I only have the GH 3 guitar, if that makes a difference. Also, it'll mostly be a solo game for me (I may be able to rope my wife in from time to time). All of my friends have little kids and incredibly busy lives, like me, so I hardly ever see them. All that in mind, which way would you go?

Great article. I bought the GHWT guitar bundle and really like it also. The playlist is great and the charting is nowhere near as bad as Guitar Hero 3. There are so many good games out now, I put it on the backburner.

Good article, Alex. I rented GHWT last week and after playing and unlocking most of the songs, I came to the same conclusion that Tycho over at Penny Arcade did: the best "music game" experience is RB2 played with GHWT instruments.

I know graphics don't really matter in a game like this and I'm not a graphic whore by any means, but GODDAMN GHWT is an ugly fucking game. Shitty style, weird between two worlds cartoon/realistic implementation and mechanical animation. I did like that the charts weren't as stupid as GH3's but singing was kinda...not right. It was off. It was a better game than last years, but it just couldn't keep up with RB2 at all.

The problem with GHWT's drum set is that the peddle isn't bolted down. I don't know if this is a problem for others, but it seemed like it kept scooting away from me whenever I tried to play it. It should be noted that I only play it during breaks at Sam's Club, and the floor there is pretty smooth.

Well, that and a drum failure rate damn near launch 360's.

I'm all for getting new technology when it releases, but why is it that when both Rock Band's and GHWT's drums came out, they shit the bed right out of the box? I understand the cause, but this is almost like when Sony quipped about M$'s backwards compatibility. "Buy our instruments when theirs break"? Your shit's broke too!

Completely forgot to mention the bass pedal. I prefer Rock Band's- it's too bad that it's not compatible with it.

And I really bet that some of the GHWT drum's failure rate has to do with those "armored" notes that you have to smash. The set's pretty sturdy, feels a lot more solid that Rock Band's. We'll see how it holds up after a few weeks...

I have to disagree with you about the setlists. I know it ultimately comes down to taste in music I suppose, but there are easily more songs in RB2 that I never want to play again than there are in GHWT. Also, Visions is just about the worst song to have appeared in any of these games so far.

It's a fine setlist if you like whiny bands from the last two years. There's some great, fun stuff but for the most part it's Interpol and a dozen bands that sound like Interpol. They also have a bunch of foreign bands which is not a bad thing by itself (not at all- hell, Hier Kommt Alex is my theme song) but it's not even bands anyone knows. It's hard enough to get people to sing an unknown song when it's in English.

Also a lot of the gigs are horrible because you have to play a lot of shit to get to the good songs. Never mind that Tool gig, which is just excruciatingly boring to play through.

Plus, they have a Coldplay song. 'Nuff said.

I hate the interface and organization in GHWT. It's clumsy, and, in general, sucky.

But like Alex said, the drumming is awesome. On Expert you get to do a lot of stuff that isn't in RB2. The floating kick pedal is a killer, but there are ways for enterprising players to reduce that as an irritation.

I reviewed the game off of one set, where the drums were basically OK out of the box, but the final retail I have now has a red pad that's basically DOA. Used the drum tuner app, all that, and it registers almost no hits. Tomorrow I have to remember to RMA it, but once I get working GH drums I'll probably use them exclusively.

I actually haven't tried the GHWT drums with Rock Band yet, and I'm a little afraid. Are the cymbal hits always cymbals? That would kill it for me. I love having a dedicated snare, cymbals and toms... gives it a whole new feeling.

I've only done it a little. I unplugged the right cymbal, and the yellow pad was always mapped to the yellow cymbal.

Yeah, easily the worst part of GHWT is the presentation. As of now, I would probably say that I prefer to play GHWT solo over RB2, but RB2 is easily a better party game because it is far simpler to just pick a bunch of songs and start playing, apart from other reasons.

More or less the same for me at this point. Though DLC is a MASSIVE check in RB's favor.

CHUDTIP- Play as Travis Barker to unlock the "Don't Blink" achievement. Ironically, Barker just unlocked the "Can't Blink" achievement himself.
Damn you for making me laugh.

Hey Alex,

The Wii version of Rock Band 2 will offer DLC, just like GH:WT. And all the previous DLC will be available. It's been made official a couple of months ago. Trust me, I know, that's why I stuck with RB2.

For the rest, I completely agree with you, more so on the setlist. GH has a lot of filler. I don't mind unknown artists, but unlike RB, they're not good at all.

As somebody who hasn't checked out GHWT yet, I wanted to thank you for the article. Bravo. The findings are more or less was what I expected, though; instruments good, game not so good. But it was nice to know.

And I really, really do not understand the people who prefer GHWT's setlist. That's madness.
Yeah, just looked at the setlists. Overlaps included (there are more than I expected), there are around 25 songs I want to play sight unseen in the World Tour setlist, and 36 for Rock Band 2. But the ones I'm really excited about are mostly in Rock Band 2. Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, The Replacements, Sonic Youth, L7, etc.

The failure rate on the drums and the free-floating kick are the only things keeping me from picking up GHWT just for the hardware though. I really can't afford to get both full sets, nor do I have the room to store all of that plastic. Ugh, can't decide.
There's a lot to love in GH's main setlist, but as has been mentioned, factor in DLC, and Rock Band stomps a mudhole in GH's setlist.

Yeah, Rock Band just kicks the shit out of the setlist. But GHWT does have its moments. It's just cool to see Hendrix come on stage and kick your guitarist off. But playing as musicians and a more robust character creation system doesn't really make a difference.

Also, for a series known for its amazing end songs (Freebird, Through the Fire and Flames, hell, even Play With Me) the last song is kind of a letdown.

Spoilers, I guess? (swipe) The last set has you playing on top of Times Square and has Muse, Metallica, System of a Down and other brutal bands. When you win you jump off the building and are grabbed up by Griffins, who pull you around the sky in a chariot while Dream Theater's Pull Me Under starts up. Epic, sure, but not exactly the perfect end song.

So is all of the equipment compatible between all Guitar Heroes and all Rock Bands?

I just have 2 wired GH2 guitars, and I have GH2, GH3 and GHWT. Thinking about getting a USB mic and a splitter for the USB port on my XBox.

But if I wanted to get RB or RB2, would the guitars and mic still work? I'd just like to get some new songs at some point, and RB has a lot of them.

What you're doing will work, but not every instrument works with every game across all platforms. The easiest reference I've seen is here.

Sweet. That was really helpful - thanks.
